Rockets getting tough with McGrady

If you read between all the nice words, the Rockets sent a tough message to Tracy McGrady on Monday. To summarize: 1. Get in better shape. 2. Learn to deal with the pain in your left knee. 3. Don't come back until you do. There were all sorts of things left unsaid as the Rockets delicately attempted to do the right thing for the team while not mentally losing their $21-million star. Conditioning? That's a tough word to use halfway through an NBA season. Is McGrady's conditioning an issue because he hasn't been working hard, or because his surgically repaired left knee won't allow him to work hard? Pain? Another tough one. The Rockets and their medical staff believe McGrady's knee is sound and suggested he play through the pain. McGrady has been unable to do this, and it's important to remember that none of us -- including the doctors -- knows how badly McGrady is hurting. If he says the pain is intolerable, then the pain is intolerable.

this is suprising. they challenge a guy who's always been extremely tough and doesnt mind putting it all on the line for the team. this is t-mac we're talking about isnt it? when ranking toughness and willingness to play through the pain, he's certainly in the top 10

Houston is doing the right thing by putting their foot down before T-Mac will get out of hand. Remember, he already questioned Yao's effort. I have only one problem w/ Houston and is alwyas my concern the previous years. They cannot win in the playoffs if you have Rafer Alston as your starting PG. Houston needs a steadier PG. Andre Miller would be a perfect fit for them.

EAZEBACK...are you really Tracy MCGrady under that mask as there is no one other than maybe you who could utter those comments w/ a straight face. TMAC ranks up there w/ Carlos Boozer, Eddy Curry, NENE , and Agent 0 on the DNP...I'm a gutless quitter earning 20 mill a year squad to sit on my arse and cry

January 13, 2009  09:35 AM ET

Jokes and tricks I say!

January 13, 2009  09:58 AM ET

trade t-mac to the wizards for gilbert arenas both make the same money that would solve that problem and then that would clear up more shots for ron artest

January 13, 2009  10:08 AM ET

Trade t-mac for gilbert arenas straight up both got bad knees and both make about the same money and that gives ron artest more touches

January 13, 2009  10:17 AM ET

I used to love T-Mac until he lost his heart and his passion for the game. I won't undermine the pain he's in but there should be a little more accountability when you're the "franchise" player or at least one of them. When they got Artest this summer, everyone claimed they'd be the next Big 3 and put them right up there to win a title and I always said T-Mac and Yao would be out with injuries and it would make no difference. T-Mac's gotta retire and give Houston a chance to sign a new franchise layer in 2010.

January 13, 2009  10:22 AM ET

He has clearly overstayed his welcome - time to move him.

January 13, 2009  10:32 AM ET

In Tornoto, he couldn't be the "man", so he went to Orlando...In orlando, he didn't heva the "help" to get out of first round, he whined, and went to Hou. In HOU, he thinks Yao is too soft (which he very well maybe) to win. From being one of the most gifted players, he's sadly coming to become a kind of a joke. Clearly, he showed ack of motivation the past few years. No one can argue about that. All injuries apart, he first doesn't have the heart to be a winner. Talk to Grant Hill about injuries and the motivation to get back on the court.
TMac should retire and let Hou move on with a shot at someother bigtime player.

January 13, 2009  10:34 AM ET

I think it's time for the Rockets to move on. T-Mac just doesn't seem to want it anymore, so why keep him and drag the franchise down?

Move him while he still has some value.

You obviously don't actually WATCH basketball. Tmac is ALWAYS hurt and he has NO HEART- see how many times he has driven to the hoop in the last 5 years-

All he does is shoot jumpers and stay on the perimeter. Clearly you are the one who puts him into all those all-star games because you saw him dunk once in 1998......lol

January 13, 2009  10:43 AM ET

McGrady is a ****, always has been, always will be.

January 13, 2009  11:06 AM ET

FINALLY THEY ARE SHUTTING HIM DOWN FOR TWO WEEKS.. THEY SHOULD HAVE DONE THIS A MONTH AGO.

January 13, 2009  11:27 AM ET

If the Rockets choke yet again to get out of the first round of the playoff, IT'S ON ME!!!

Regards,

Tracy McGrady

PS. Unless my knee (or back, or shoulder, or head) has an owie...

January 13, 2009  11:30 AM ET

Are there any more doubts that he and Vince Carter are related?

January 13, 2009  11:36 AM ET

come on folks if u check the post about tmac and yao i called them both soft as charmin..... i was playing around people. purely in jest my good folks

January 13, 2009  12:35 PM ET

They better not be too tough on T-Mac.... he might twist an ankle, blow a knee, pull a groin, shred his shoulder or break a leg -- or a combination of 2 or more.... then he'll be out even longer.

In all seriousness tho... maybe they should take the opposite approach and caution him to stay indoors when it's breezy out in Houston.... we all know a stiff gust of all of 15 mph might put this guy on the IR or end his career if there's some leaves blowing in that gust.

January 13, 2009  12:40 PM ET

just take a year off, tmac. or be like gilbert arenas and take two.

January 13, 2009  12:49 PM ET

Check out my recent blog of the Jazz game i went to last night.
