How Raptors could deal for Nash
Steve Nash already has been talking about finishing his career (his contract expires in 2010) in New York or back home in Canada. Why not sooner? I've heard speculation about such a possibility around the NBA. It's an intriguing proposition. The Suns start to look beyond Shaq now with the idea of building around Amare Stoudemire. While the Raptors push to get back in serious playoff contention to try to persuade Chris Bosh to resign. Toronto reportedly has been anxious to trade, but really has little of great value. Here's the deal and while bold, it could respond to both teams' desires. Nash, Leandro Barbosa and Robin Lopez for Jose Calderon, Andrea Bargnani, Anthony Parker and Jason Kopono and perhaps Jamario Moon to equalize salaries.

That would be a huge deal. Honestly, it looks like it would work well for both teams, though Phoenix would have to look for somebody to back up Calderon.

this is so stupid, I love nash as much as the next canadian but seriously! Why take on that salary at PG when we have a perfectly capable PG in Calderon.
Nash is on the Decline and Calderon is on the Incline, I hope Collangelo's Man crush for Nash doesnt cause him to do something so foolish.
Wait until 2010 and get him at a more reasonable price

Calderon plays horrid defense and get abused by every PG in the Eastern Conference. In the West, the PGs are better, so....

this deal does not make sense for both team. Nash is getting older and is almost time for him to break down. W/ the new system in Phoenix, Nash is prolonging his career. A slower tempo will be better for him. he cannot continue running and gunning everytime and believe that his body is going to last. Stockton had a long career because of that half court offense in Utah. Toronto wants the MVP Nash years but that's not going to happen because of his years.
The deal could happen because of the Colangelo connection to both teams.

This makes no sense, it is down right stupid. Why give up the up and coming 24 year olds Calderon and Andrea bargnani for a 34 year old Nash who may only be in the NBA for maybe 2 more years. I love Nash, he is great player but this trade does not work to the Raptors advantage.

Calderon is turning 28 this year and he is a very good back-up guard. However durability and extended minutues translates into injuries. Trade him and that stiff Bargnani and shake things up. They clearly can't compete with the current set up. I agree that Nash is old at this point but you have understand that this guy brings more to the table than assists. He is a leader who brings fire and many intanglibles into the dressing room. Also, his contract expires in 2010 - he may be a shadow of his own self in 2 years but the worst case scenario is that his contract becomes an attractive trade commodity if things don't work out. You have to make this trade...throw in Parker (usefull backup) and whoever else...Ukic (terrible) and a box of gatorade.

Not so sure that this trade doesn't make sense. Phoenix would get the better end of this deal, even though Calderon isn't known for defense (and that's what Kerr and Porter have been trying to preach). Not a big Bargnani fan but he could develop into something solid and Kapono and Parker are solid swingmen role players. Also if you are going to build around Amare it helps that everyone listed in this trade arent stars so you dont have to worry about his psyche.
As far as Toronto goes, Nash is just a marketing move. Nothing more.

Resign? I seriously doubt building a playoff contending team will persuade Bosh to RESIGN.

SI writers are always creating stories where none exist. Lets get more create guys, maybe Lebron to Orlando for Howard ,Turkulou, and three #1 draft picks and $100M in cash.

Phoenix does need shooters, a veteran big, and a back up point, but this won't happen. Given the players involved Phoenix only gets better now by adding some shooters, but since this doesn't displace anyone in the rotation, when will they play? Or do they bench the guys in the current rotation and create more whining in the locker room? And they would still have a hole at backup point, lose a key 6th man, and will still need another big man (maybe two). Meanwhile the starters wouldn't totally tank, but Calderon is not as good as Nash right now. This makes sense only if Phoenix is trying to hang out around 6-10 place in the West and totally rebuild 2-3 years when all the veterans leave or retire anyway. For Toronto this is a gamble that Nash's leadership and talent will allow them to win some of those close games right now. And then as he ages they build around Barbosa and Bosh is they can resign him.

An aging, declining Steve Nash is not going to be enough to convince CB4 to not head south of the border the second he becomes available. But it looks like a trade that would equally help both teams so if this story has any truth to it go for it.

How about this one:
A three-team trade is in the works between the Mavericks, Lakers, and Cavaliers:
Dallas would get: Kobe Bryant, Damon Jones, Cleveland Browns TE Kellen Winslow - a battle for the Cowboys starting TE spot would take place where we'd really find out if Kellen Winslow is a "f $ @ $ ing soldier"
Cleveland would get: Dirk Nowitzki, Andrew Bynum, Dallas Cowboys WR Terrell Owens, lifetime supply of Kleenex
Los Angeles would get: LeBron James, Vladimir Radmonovic, Ben Wallace, an Afro Pic, and Cleveland Indians pitcher Cliff Lee, where there would be a subsequent coin flip to determine if he plays for the Dodgers or Angels
Is that creative enough for you SI? lol
