Did NBA warning start Celtics losing streak?

The NBA has warned the Celtics this season about their excessive taunting, of which we see a lot less of after losing seven of nine. Bully stuff. Even Bobcats rookie D. J. Augustin said: "(The Celtics) come in and intimidate you and try to punk you. But if you don't back down from them, they kind of fold." You don't hear that much about defending champions. Also, defending champs usually don't lose a key piece over a mere $5 million (and a luxury tax hit), which was about the salary cap exception deal the Celts wouldn't give to key sixth man James Posey. And that seems to be catching up with them with their repeat hopes perhaps resting on whether the Knicks will let Stephon Marbury to go to them for free.

for starters rookies need to shut their yap and play! especially if your just a good player and not a top tier talent.

January 13, 2009  07:36 AM ET

Would YOU be taunting teams if you'd lost 7 of 9? Even with a ring, that's not taunt-worthy.

Augustin is a top tier talent, the man is only 19 years old, give him three years and a major market team....

It's just a coincidence but DJ has a good point for every team. If you allow a team to punk you at the start of the game then you are already defeated. This should be another reason why the Celtics should be playing better. They have to prove that they can beat anybody w/out taunting them. If they continue to lose w/out taunting then they need to start taunting again to get that swagger back.

They didn't want to break the salary cap so that the Red Sox fans could keep on crying about the Yankees lol

where's my post?

Remember the Pistons of the 1980's? They use to intimidate other teams including the Bulls. Once other team started fighting back, then the Pistons began to wilt.

Well they did say that you could shut them up by beating them and we have. The Lakers ended their 19 game winning streak and everyone else from contenders to bottom feeders have been doing the same since. They no longer have reason to taunt anyone. As good a team as they are, I think Cleveland will come out of the East.

January 13, 2009  09:19 AM ET

I hope they lose the next 33 of 35.

If you play BB for millions of dollars and you can be intimidated by ANY other team you're just a bunch of ****.What a load of crap..."oh coach... those guys are scarin' me. How can I play ball when they're calling me names?"Pro ****

Agree with your comments but none of the so-called big 3 were saying anything to anybody (especially Ray Allen) before they got put on the same team. They were individually a bunch of ****!

Why Celts didn't pay Posey, I'll never get it. You don't get chances for repeats every other year. Mostly, once a lifetime type opportunity. Danny Ainge messed up;

January 13, 2009  09:39 AM ET

When this team was put together last year, most people understood this would be a one and done team. There is no way the Celtics could keep all of last year's players (see Posey) while the big 3 take up most of the salary. Another factor is their age. These guys are well into their 30's now and it's hard to keep up with the 20-something fast players on other teams. They been running on pure adrenalien since winning the championship and like everyone espected, they're running out of gas. They are not deep enough to get to the finals this year, although I hope they do, and their bench isn't talented enough to get them over the hump.

January 13, 2009  10:18 AM ET

HaHaHa! This year they've become the Boston Lipsticks! Pierce's gang signs and KG beating up little guys is no longer intimidating!

Deron Williams waited three years and I consider him top tier. Maybe not quite in the tier of those guys you mentioned, but still top tier.

This is a funny story; if you can't win a basketball game because someone is talking trash to you then you're not a good basketball player at all. Things like this should not get to you if you're a great basketball player.

This is not why the Celtics were on a losing slump, it was not playing good defense for 48 mins, turn the ball over almost 10 times or more a game, shot were not falling in, should of attack the paint more by driving to the basket more when the shot are not falling. I didn't see them spacing floor mostly with the second unit all the player were to bunch up in the middle. And the big 3 needs some rest give them a couple games off before all star break let them relax for a while and get reenergize.

Celtics will be fine, say what you want about the team but they have to make a better effort out there on defense end especially in the 4 QT.

Deron Williams waited 3 years before coming out of the NCAA and he is top tier. Probably not quite in the tier with the guys you are referring to, but still top tier nonetheless.
