Mets backup plan includes...

09:27 AM ET 01.14 | The news that Derek Lowe decided to sign with Atlanta hardly fazed or surprised the Mets. They had been preparing for this for nearly a week, after the Braves felt compelled to act boldly when John Smoltz left for the Red Sox, and they have a backup plan. That involves going back to the agent Scott Boras, who represents Lowe, and trying to re-sign Oliver Perez. The Mets have yet to offer Perez a contract, but they are expected to extend one within the next day or so. They are also weighing a run at Ben Sheets, but are wary of his injury history.

My prediction: Sheets is the first MLB pitcher of 2009 to go through Tommy John surgery. Anyone want to take up a TD on that?

no reason not to sign sheets to a brad penny-type offer.
Short term, small $$, incentives.
that being said - you don't COUNT on him- he would be a bonus

Smart not to offer 4 years/15 per to Lowe-
he's a #3-4 starter thats getting OLD.

no choice but to sign ollie now- they are getting DESPERATE-

Not sure who they have to offer- but I would SERIOUSLY try and trade for Peavy

Offer Ben a one-year incentive-laden deal, you can't lose much on a contract like that.

The Mets front office is really ticking my off! I am guessing that the last two years of collasping does not phase them. So we picked up some relief help, signed an unknown starter. How about helping by getting stronger offensively.

"All over(the place) Ollie' is way better than sheets for the long run. Sheets stinks, he's got no tolerance for pain, therefore, no guts!

Sign O.Perez, give the young guys a chance to compete for the fifth SP spot... sing Pedro to an incentives one year contract as a back up... I take Pedro over Sheets any day..

Remember... what ever team takes Sheets will have to give up a Type-A Draft Pick since the Brewers offered him Arbitration.

Aren't the Mets moving to a new stadium too? Don't they have their own cable TV network? Why is Wilpon being so cheap this offseason? Did he really lose that much in the Madoff scandal?

I doubt he'll accept that. Otherwise he would've accepted arbitration, which would probably guarantee him $13-$14 million next year since he made $12 million this year. The reason he would reject artibration is because he feels he can get a multiyear contract from someone. Some team will give him a 2 year deal. You can bank on that.

Hey, Henry wouldn't go the extra ten for tex, what is that 1.2 or so per year?

January 14, 2009  03:53 PM ET

yea but what happens if the mets offer sheets a 1 year deal and he gets hurt.. then where out a starter and we need to bring up one of our new guys like parnell or neise which can hurt their career in the future.

There is always Ponson and Colon just waiting to fill out the bottom end of a rotation...

With his history of injuries he will probably be looking to lock in for 4 years if he can get it.

The estimate is between $400 and 600 mio. Not sure what Wilpon's net worth was before the Madoff issue but I'm sure this will cramp his style.

Is Omar Minaya and his "vaunted" Mets stuck in some deja-vu ??? I believe they have entered the Twilight Zone ( starring Rod Serling ) !!!

January 14, 2009  08:47 PM ET

Hey guys What the hell is going on here? Is Minaya still on vacation ...... Wake up Man

That is why no team has signed him yet. The Brewers would probably give him more than anyone. He may end up back in Milwaukee for another year.

January 14, 2009  09:23 PM ET

has there ever been a more up-and-down pitcher than ollie. borASS has omar stuck and if he doesnt pay he will be left with tim redding to improve his starting staff.

January 14, 2009  09:39 PM ET

Perez is more of a risk than Sheets and has less upside. Someone is going to get a pretty good deal on an ace level pitcher. I'm a Braves fan and I would rather have Sheets than Lowe

Colon just signed with the ChiSox.
