Isles may shut down DiPietro

What's left of Rick DiPietro's season rests on a balky knee that hasn't responded well to surgery more than two months ago to repair meniscus damage, and the Islanders must consider the possibility of shutting him down after only five starts this season. A decision is believed to be imminent. In one sign of the severity of the situation, general manager Garth Snow yesterday said he has held exploratory talks with the agent for former Isles goaltender Wade Dubielewicz, who recently was bought out of his contract with Ak Bars Kazan in Russia's Kontinental Hockey League. According to Kurt Overhardt, who represents Dubielewicz, his client has been contacted by three NHL teams with goalie issues.

Shut him down, hope you win the draft lottery, build a new stadium, and then maybe things will turn around.

So, how's that 15yr contract looking now? He's great when he's healthy....and that's a big when!

The Isles are going nowhere fast. With the time and money invested in Rick, the only smart thing to do would be to shut him down. Of course, smart and the Isles can hardly go in the same sentence.

Definately shut him down. I hope Dubielewicz turns the Islanders offer down too. Teach them a lesson in contract length stupidity. You should never give a goalie more than 4 years. They are more prone to injury than any other position, plus they are far more inconsistent than any other position. Very few goalies have proven to be stallworth netminders in today's NHL, Martin Brodeur and Roberto Luongo are the only 2 that come to mind as being continuously at the top of their games without fail. Both them got injured this year too, what a coincidence...

Wasn't it just a little while ago thast DiPietro (who I happen to think is a terrific goalie...and I'm a Rangers' fan!!!) was w3hining that he doesnn't like the perception that he is a bit fragile?

I noticed MO Reese mentioned Luongo for longevity...he of course started with whom?.....
The Islanders are worse than a 2nd rate operation

Aim low for lottery.

a few thoughts

DP is so lucky that money is guaranteed.

They are already tanking the season for Tavares.

Mike DUNHAM could have made an appearance in net last night if McDonald's backup got hurt. MIKE DUNHAM.

Garth Snow should lose the suit and play the remainder of the season...they'll still suck but could make for a heart-warming made for tv movie...

"Party on Wade. Party on Garth."

One word.....STUPID!!! That is what you get when you sign for a long term. You get to sit and collect $$. I'm sure RD is smiling when no one is looking.

I don't think he should smile, he'll probably hurt his face if he does!

I know the Isles drafted Luongo... just to prove how ridiculous that team is, what did they get in return for him and Olli Jokinen? Mark Parrish and Oleg Kvasha! Who the heck makes that deal??? Oh yeah... Anyways, Luongo performed incredibly with the Isles and Panthers, and now he is still at the top of his game with the Canucks. I stand by my statement of Luongo and Brodeur as thte only current goaltenders in the NHL to be completely consistent, although both are currently injured (Luongo returning soon).

January 14, 2009  02:00 PM ET

As a 30 year Islander fan the whole situation is a joke and is going nowhere fast. I personally do not think he is a great goalie and three years ago when they signed him to a 15 year deal I cringed. They get what they deserve and overall the person I put the most blame on for the Islanders is Mike Milbury, the list o f people he let go like Luongo, Redden, Brewer, Bertuzzi, Chara etc still amazes me and how Mike Milbury still draws a paycheck having anything to do with hockey amazes me still. Milbury should be a shoe salesmen cause that's all he'll ever be remembered for when he beat a guy at MSG with his own shoe.

Lol. And not only will it make a heartwarming movie but they'll suck even more that they'll definitely get the number one overall pick. It's a win-win situation.....if you happen to not be an Islanders fan. Not that I've seen many.

This s why YOU DON'T GIVE A GOALIE 15 YEARS!

Even if it was a 4 year deal instead of a 15 year deal, would it make a difference? He still would have been injured regardless of whether its a 1, 4 or 20 year contract. Ovechkin signed a 13 year deal, but he has remained healthy. The length of contract has no effect on a player's health. Use common sense people.

With that amount of doe and that magnitude of stupidity, he can afford to laugh even if people are looking, heck, I'd wet my self laughing on national TV if it had been me. And I consider myself an Islander's fan.

January 15, 2009  08:26 AM ET

Ahh another horrible long term contract by the Islanders. DO they just say "Hey this guy has talent" and sign a long term deal. DP (Rangers Fans you know the last part. We chant it every time he falls or misplays the puck) has never proven consistency in his game. His mistakes are glaring and the injuries are worrisome for a long term vision for any club. Cut your losses and trade him to Chicago for 'Bulin. He'd make a descent backup when healthy.

only like 13 more years left on the short term contract
