Nuggets' Karl blasts Cuban

What they thought was a kick by Chauncey Billups turned out to be a kick in the gut for the Dallas Mavericks. After being fouled with 2.2 seconds left, Billups made two free throws to give the Nuggets a 99-97 win against Dallas on Tuesday night at the Pepsi Center. "When I was up on my shot, that's where I felt it," said Billups, who scored a team-high 23 points as the Nuggets won their first game after a five-game winning streak was snapped Friday against Detroit. "A foul's a foul. What can you do?" What Dallas owner Mark Cuban did was storm onto the court after the game screaming at the officials. After the game, Nuggets coach George Karl blasted Cuban, saying he improperly was getting in the ear of the Nuggets' J.R. Smith at halftime. Karl blasted Cuban, saying he was talking to Smith. "I don't care if Cuban barks, but he shouldn't be barking at my players," Karl said. "He barked at J.R. at halftime. I thought it was very unprofessional, irresponsible. And if he sees something that he wants to deliver to the league, fine, he can do that. "But he shouldn't be on the court talking to one of my players. And he was talking to J.R. about an elbow situation. And I thought it doesn't look good for anybody."

Mark Cuban is the " Willie Wonka" of basketball.....Just the bratty little kid in the toy store with too much money..

Just when I thought the officiating was getting better. Not! The referees swallowed their whistle when a call should have been made and they whistled when it should have been a non call. Just when you thought they are doing their job fairly, nope, they go back to their old ways. Just call the game the way the game should be called. If their new system of actually grading the officials is suppose to work then these officials that blows some calls should be made accountable. They should be made accountable so that they won't be making the same mistakes and it will make the NBA better and more consistent on its officiating.

if you kick a guy while he is shooting , that's a foul no two ways about it. If they played better defense he would not have to resort to the Karate Kid press at the end of the game.

January 14, 2009  08:42 AM ET

If it's illegal for Cuban to talk to opposing players during the game, he should straight up be fined. If he keeps doing it, bar him from attending any NBA games.

Cuban is the leagues biggest idiot. Build a winner, then you can start talking. Until then, stop babying your softees in Dallas. The real men/Texans play in San Antonio.

Couldn't have said it better myself

Mark Cuban will do anything to be the topic of conversation. When will he learn it's about his team, and not him?

Chauncey did the kicking. Like what you said there should be no two way about it. When you lead w/ your leg while shooting, should that be a foul on the offensive player?

Cuban should be commended for sticking up for his player. He's a hands on guy and I hope he runs the league someday...some owners out there don't even know the name of the teams they own.

January 14, 2009  09:53 AM ET

Cuban having a beef about the officiating is nothing new, but Karl is right. Cuban has no business confronting an opposing player. He should know that he's probably doing more harm than good anyway. Just as there are certain players that don't get the benefit of the doubt, the refs have taken a similar approach to Cuban.

The NBA changed the rule for shooters this year, you cant kick your leg out when you shoot, it is an OFFENSIVE FOUL. all you Cubes haters learn your basketball and quit being babies because your owner doesnt care about your team as much as Cubes cares about the Mavs. Another case of the Mavs being screwed by the refs...

January 14, 2009  10:28 AM ET

point is -
if he wants to taunt/boo/whine/bark at anyone-
he has the right to do so.....FROM HIS SEAT.
DON'T get on the floor or he should be THROWN OUT
of the arena- like they would do to any fan that did that

I see Dallas is now implementing the "Bruce Bowen School of Defense?"

I can just see Cuban out there now, barking "SWEEP THE LEG! YOU GOT A PROBLEM WITH THAT?"

If Cuban really cared, he would realize that being a micromanaging blowhard has been part of the problem holding the Mavs from reaching the next level.

This proves that you are ignorant. You don't know the facts. You just wished Cuban would have said that and that the Mavs players would do that but the is not the case. It's been done to the Mavs but never has the Mavs done what you said. Billups was the one who kicked the defensive player and created the contact. Know the rules and facts before you say something. And yes Cuban is wrong for going out on the court and if he did it during the game then the team should get a technical and he should be given a suspension.
