Ferentz, Spagnuolo on Pioli's list?
If the Chiefs fire Herm Edwards, as even a couple of their coaches believe will happen, they'll be behind in the race to hire a new head coach. Detroit, St. Louis, Oakland and the New York Jets have been looking for coaches since shortly after the regular season ended and could be getting close to naming replacements. New general manager Scott Pioli will need to move quickly if he makes a change and wants to land one of the top available candidates. One is New York Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.Pioli has worked with University of Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz, who has been rumored to be one of Pioli's top coaching candidates. Ferentz has been telling those close to him that he will be staying at Iowa.

What is Ferentz going to say? "Yeah, I'm looking to leave Iowa for whatever opportunity comes around." Pioli will get a good coach in there and within 2 years KC will be successful.

Herm drafted Croyle, and also brought in Huard and Thigpen.

and thigpen is doo doo i suppose? he's a young QB and will need time to develop just like most other young qb's. not herms fault croyle cant stay healthy. they will look to free agency to get a qb, im pretty certain of that

and i suppose thigpen is doo doo? he's a pretty good young qb and like most young qb's will need time to develope. its not herms fault that croyle cant stay healthy. they will address the qb situation via free agency im pretty sure. drafting another qb will mean another 2-3yrs of mediocraty no matter who the coach is

Pioli should look at Steve Spagnuolo, Mike Shanahan, Jason Garrett and Rex Ryan... These are all great canidates that all deserve an interview and with the right offer any of them I would think would be more than happy with this job... You've got a great GM, renovated stadium, one of the best fan bases in football, a great young pool of talented players and 32 million under the salary cap to work with... Not to mention if you get someone to take Larry Johnson's contract and get rid of him your looking at more like 40 million under the cap.... It is an ideal job and whoever takes the Chiefs to the Super Bowl and wins it with us will be a legend forever in Kansas City... How can you not like those circumstances...

Here's my list of Coaching canidates and in order that Chiefs fans should want them:
1. Bill Cowher - Very unlikely and he has said he won't coach in 09 but rumors are he will still take offers and interviews.
2. Mike Shanahan - If you get him you get a proven winner and an experienced Super Bowl Head Coach.
3. Jason Garrett - This guy brings not only a young new look at the game but brings his brothers and assistants with him and is one of the hottest young talents up for a Head Coaching position.
4. Steve Spagnuolo - Great Defensive Coordinator for years with the Giants, won a Super Bowl with them so he knows how to win and brings Bill Cowher type intensity which rubs off on players.
5. Rex Ryan - Another Great Defensive Coordinator in Baltimore who could lure the likes of Terrel Suggs, Albert Haynesworth, or Julius Peppers here with the style of defense he likes to play, another great talent waiting for his opportunity.
If the Chiefs get one of these guys all of Kansas City should be happy and with any of these guys we have a shot to make it to the Super Bowl... GO CHIEFS!!!

Pioli will defintely help get that program turned around, but I would venture that Herman and 1/2 of the roster won't be around to see it.

Appears this is a Mafia deal. They are only going to hire people whose last name ends in a vowel. I wonder if they are going to "knee cap" anyone in the process of taking over the KC area.

Well, everybody knows that "King Carl" called the personnel shots at KC, and if we're down in that area it's because of him. He wouldn't listen when everybody including the Alaska Hockey-Mom's Association knew that the might O-Line was getting OLD!
It wasn't until Priest was gone for good, Willie Roaf and Will Shields retired, and other departures that the lack of new talent in the waiting room was exposed. BLAME KING CARL, for that NOT Herm.
Herm "blew up the team" last year, and took a lot of heat for it. But it was inevitable. Old players, no good "new" players... Herm didn't "blow up" the team, he simply presided over the eventual slow death that had set in since Vermeil left...
And even though Herm's too good of a guy to blame King Carl, it WAS Carl's fault for not giving Herm the tools to back-build replacements that were sorely needed when the entire team became geriatric has-beens within a year.
So Herm didn't have a choice about the way the team was put together, and he didn't have a choice but to start rebuilding from scratch when there wasn't anything left. All things considered, I think it's an admirable feat that the Chiefs weren't fighting the Lions for the first draft pick between two winless teams this year. The Chiefs were SO CLOSE in many, many games, despite the team being completely overhauled.
The Chiefs are on the cusp of having a respectable, winning season. Credit Herm Edwards for making lemonade out of a dump-truck of lemons given to him by the unlamented FORMER head guy. He DESERVES ONE MORE YEAR to show what he's made of, preferably under Pioli (who should let Herm do what he does best).
Think it can't be done? I offer three recent examples: 2008 Miami Dolphins, 2008 Atlanta Falcons, and 2006 New Orleans Saints. All three teams were in the gutter and slowly dying. All three teams experienced a miraculous rebirth...
...And while one could make the case that all three teams also had new coaches, I would offer the counterpoint that "King Carl" called the shots in KC, not Herm. And seeing Carl's taillights for the last time in Arrowhead parking is, to me, the same thing as getting a new coach, only better; Better, because Herm showed an ability to shine up a piece of poo despite Carl's interference.
Give Herm one more year. Despite the 2008 team record, he's earned it.
