Sources: Ryan leading Jets race

The New York Jets' coaching search got off to a clumsy start, with owner Woody Johnson out of the country and with Bill Cowher in and out of contention, but the process finally is starting to crystallize. If the Steelers beat the Baltimore Ravens Sunday in the AFC Championship Game, the Jets will have their head coach in place by early next week, according to league sources. Barring an unexpected development, perhaps another team stealing him away, that coach will be Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan, according to a report in the New York Daily News. It has come down to Ryan, New York Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer and Arizona Cardinals assistant head coach Russ Grimm, sources said. That the Jets haven't moved quickly on Spagnuolo or Schottenheimer, neither of whom is involved in the playoffs, is a blatant indication that Ryan is the preferred choice. Like Ryan, Grimm still is in the playoffs, but he's believed to be a fallback candidate.

I think Ryan would be a perfect fit for the Jets.

I love that 3-4, 4-3 hybrid defense the Ravens run. The Jets have the players to run a similar defense.

Teams should have been jumping to promote Rex Ryan for years now. I'm surprised that only the Jets have given him serious consideration.

"League sources" offering assurances of what the Jets will do? How in the world would the league know? Best kept secret in town, obviously. C'mon. Insult us some more, Mr. Newpaper Writer Man.
