Tomlinson's heard trade rumors

While Chargers fans try to get over a disappointing loss to the Steelers, the Chargers brass is now looking ahead to next season. But the big question on the minds of many is what's next for star running back LaDainian Tomlinson. He's under contract for another four years, but will he be a Charger next season? Tomlinson says he's heard the rumors that the Chargers may trade him, allowing them to keep the cheaper Darren Sproles and get some younger players and draft picks to build a stronger future. Tomlinson still has 4 years left on his contract, and says management has not told him anything. "As far as I'm concerned, I haven't had any indications. I'm still under contract and until told otherwise, I'll prepare to play football here," he said. The Chargers have a lot of questions to answer this off season - questions that right now they're not ready to address publicly. "Anything in terms of where we're headed and out team, I think those questions would be answered at another time," head coach Norv Turner said.

We should not be surprised. His production has slipped some... And the recent end of year injuries might signal worse things to come. We'll see...

It would be a tough decision to make but if they were going to trade him now is the time to do it. Another couple of injury ridden seasons and he will have no trade value.

I like LT, but he is a little soft. I also think if the Chargers tag Sproiles as replacement, it will kill the little guy. I mean he is a smurf out there, and they have him returning kicks, in on almost every play, filling the gatorade bottles... His career will be short unless used wisely

He has been hurt the past few years when they needed him the most. I also do not like the special treatment he gets by not having to go through camp as the rest of the players do. His production has been slipping the past few years and he continues to get hurt so he could be on the downward spiral. I hope not, he is a gifted player.

who in their right mnd would trade for LT?
he is CLEARLY on the downside of his career and has been
incredibly injury prone recently- and with that contract???
- likely HOF'er- but aging running backs are USELESS
once they start breaking down.

I agree. What team would want to commit big bucks for four years in a RB on the downside with injury issues? Not really an otpion for the Chargers unless they are willing to dump his contract for a 2 or 3rd round pic to some team that thinks they are a running back away from winning ti all.... The Chargers can only hope to move him...

If a running back of LT's caliber can avoid practice, and still be deadly when pounding the rock, I don't consider it special treatment. These guys have short NFL lifespans and if they can perform with out having to risk injury in a useless practice...all the more power to them.

LT is a great RB. Future Hall Of Famer. Teams have to account for LT for 4 quarters. Teams game plan around him specifically. I am not surprised that his numbers have dropped some.

No need to trade him yet.

January 14, 2009  11:39 AM ET

what exactly would the be able to get for him? dont see too many teams giving up a 1st and another pick for him and im sure thats what they'd be asking. is he done? only time will tell but if he's not back 100% next yr he will be cut following the season

January 14, 2009  12:08 PM ET

Can you say 'Raiders'? They have a habit of recycling players. Turf toe, groin pull/tendon detachment, etc. He's certainly getting beat up as of late. I can't see Sproles as the star RB though...he just doesn't have the size to withstand every play of abuse for long, which makes me think they'll give LT another year to see if he can remain healthy..

January 14, 2009  12:10 PM ET

No offense to Sproles here. No one can deny his production in the last 2 games even though he had only 11 yeards in 15 rush attempts but he is a little man and will he be able to handle a WHOLE season of returns and runs? Look at the trouble Willie Parker has had the last couple of years with injuries and he is bigger than Sproles. (Hell of a game, Willie!)

If I were the Chargers I'd re-think this "rumor" unless they think Sproles can last a whole season.

January 14, 2009  12:11 PM ET

But then again, LT's injury is a tendon tear which is a lot worse then a pull or muscle tear........

January 14, 2009  01:09 PM ET

An aging RB, The Browns will probably pick him up. He'll have one good year and they'll throw in a 3 year contract so he can fade away quickly!

January 14, 2009  01:20 PM ET

wow.......i can't imagine him in another uniform. but as stated he is on the decline. i'm not sure of the life expectancy of a nfl rb in the league but i'm sure his body has taken just about enough after 8 stellar seasons.

In addition to that, the Chargers have one of the better offensive lines in the league to protect their RB's and still LT has had injuries. If a team that wanted him had a weaker line that SD, LT's demise would only accelerate due to more injury. IF SD wants to move him, they're going to have a hard time at best, especially with four years left on his contract.

Trade him to the Broncos and let him thrive in that offense and face his old team twice a year..

January 14, 2009  04:28 PM ET

Another punk who should be traded right out of the NFL.
