Next Winter Classic in new Yankee Stadium?
The new Yankee Stadium is at or near the top of the National Hockey League's wish list to host the Winter Classic next New Year's Day. Don Renzulli, senior vice president of events for the NHL, said league officials will start touring possible sites for the next big outdoor game soon, after the NHL All-Star Game Jan. 25. And Yankee Stadium is expected to be high on the list, as it has been the past two years. It had seemed possible that the first Classic, on Jan. 1, 2008, was to be an Islanders-Rangers game at the old Stadium, but the Yankees had concerns about the logistics of putting refrigeration equipment on the field before the final baseball season at the park. Instead, the game was held in Orchard Park, N.Y., and was a success. Again last year, there were talks between the league and the Yankees about having the Rangers and another team play the second Classic at the Stadium in 2009. The NHL did a mock-up of the rink, which would have stretched from the home-plate area out to short centerfield. "But they had a lot going on, between having their last season and the Pope's visit," Renzulli said. "We just decided that we'd keep the door open."

A n outdoor game in NYC itself is a good idea. The Isles playing in it is not. The Rangers vs the Pens or Flyers or an original 6 team is a much better idea.

Yeah. I don't think the Islanders would draw. The stadium would be filled with Ranger Fans. I say put it in a stadium up in Boston (not necessarily Fenway) and have the Bruins and Canadians play each other.
I would love for the Flyers and Rangers to play each other some day out doors, perhaps at Rutgers. The proposed Flyers vs Penguins at State College is a great idea, but I dont think it would work as well since the game would be played on New Years and most of the student body would be home.

The moment that stadium is ready to host a game, it must be done ... the NHL is (and has been for a long time) bleeding red ink (other than the original 6 clubs and a few here and there teams) and they need to keep up the good momentum that the Winter Classic has built. And I agree with all of the above re: the Islanders - of course, that's always a draw in NYC, but to the folks in Vancouver or Phoenix, not so much. Make it a compelling match-up ... and if they can't agree on what teams will play, just come up with a simple formula: host team vs. the Stanley Cup winner. Then the only choice that will need to be made in the future is where the game will be played ... GO RANGERS!!!

The league as a whole is not bleeding red ink, as you put it. It is profitable. There are a small group of teams, in the south, that are losing money, that's it.
I love all the comments from you guys in PA... Flyers or Pens would be a great opponent... Not likely. Flyers and Pens are great opponents for each other, that's the rivalry. Rangers have a rivalry with the Isles, Devils, Bruins, Canadiens, Leafs, Blackhawks, and what was the other one? OH YEAH! From the real old days... the RED WINGS! However, since the Red Wings were in it last year and so were the Blackhawks. Maybe a good old Rangers vs. Canadiens? I think that would be great.

Hey Bob Coohn - Are you serious? So outside of the Gus Macker which focuses on the inner cities, every other sport is acting just like them golfers? ****
I do like the idea of the Classic including a host team and the Red Wings, I mean the Stanley Cup Winner.

Hey Bob Coohn - you can't be serious? What does that even mean? In the neighborhoods that would get people interested? You mean the way the NBA plays in all the local courts downtown or how MLB plays in my old little league park or maybe the way the NFL plays on our old high school field. Them hockey people? ****

Yeah I'm for Habs-Bruins in Fenway... although that would be two classic baseball parks in a row and following that up with anything short of the history of Wrigley and Fenway would probably bring a drop-off. How about Flyers-Pens at Beaver Stadium?

I wouldn't be surprised if the Wings push for a game (Against Toronto?) at Ann Arbour or Ford Field. Yankee stadium would be cool, maybe against the Devils. Forget the Rose bowl and Vegas, that's just someone taking a stupid pill and giving them a laptop to write on....

Habs-Bruins in Fenway would be outstanding. In New York, Rangers vs. Flyers, Bruins or Habs (no Isles) would be interesting as well.

Ford Field? Doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose of the winter classic being outdoors? Also, I would think temperature would be an issue?

Why not Rangers/Devils at Giants Stadium or Yankee Stadium?

If it must be a regular game, make it Rangers/Bruins or some original 6 thingy.
Honestly, I thought if the league wants to continue this, and it could be good, use it as The All Star Game Weekend. Let's face it, as noted this how most of these guys, on both sides of the pond, grew up playing this game.

I think Rangers and habs at Yankee stadium would be ideal...well ideal would be at the Big O in MTL, if the roof could open and it wasn't so dilapidated ...I think the ultimate though would be an NHL pond hockey game on a real pond, Mystery Alaska style....If the Pens play, I can just picture the Sid the kid falling through the ice, and Malkin standing above him, pushing him further down with his stick....

First, the Wings as great as they are aren't going to be in the Winter Classic again anytime soon. The rest of the teams would scream, and correctly so. Second off, this isn't even a question as to what the next game should be - take advantage of a revitalized Bruins and send them to Yankee Stadium. The following year you somehow get the Flyers involved. Maybe Philly hosting Colorado or vice versa.

I'm all for Bruins and Canadiens at Fenway or even at Foxboro
Rangers vs Devils is a good idea, although Rangers and Canadiens or Rangers vs Flyers is equally good
