Heat may trade Marion soon

06:08 AM ET 01.15 | The chances of Shawn Marion remaining with the Heat for the balance of this season are quite slim. And the thought here is that it would be in the Heat's best interest to trade this bouncy All-Star forward soon. This isn't an indictment of Marion as a player. On the right team, for the right price, Marion would be a crucial contributor. But the issue here isn't only that the Heat is not the ideal fit for Marion, whose numbers will never match his career averages in this Dwyane Wade-dominated, half-court-heavy system. It's also that Marion badly wants to be traded, as well. The Heat's goal in moving Marion is to get back a quality big man with a contract that expires in the 2010 offseason. There's a trio of big men who fit the Heat's trade criteria: Sacramento's Brad Miller, Los Angeles' Marcus Camby and Toronto's Jermaine O'Neal.

JO FOR MATRIX?????????????? HEAT NEEDS TO ADD A PIECE TO MATCH THE SALARIES. WIN WIN FOR BOTH TEAMS BUT MORE FOR RAPS.

January 15, 2009  08:07 AM ET

JO FOR MATRIX? SOUNDS LIKE WIN-WIN FOR RAPS & WIN FOR HEAT. IF JO STAYS HEALTHY HE WILL GIVE RILEY A BIG RELIEF. THEY ALSO SHOULD PUT ANOTHER PIECE ALONG WITH MARION TO MATCH JO 21 MIL. IF I WERE BC, I'D DO IT IN A SEC.

January 15, 2009  08:20 AM ET

JO and Parker for Marion? I'm not sure how the salaries match. If I were Colangelo though, I would consider cutting my losses with respect to O'Neal. He's too injury prone, and he might ruin Bargnani's sudden emergence.

This is nothing new. It's always to be continued and see what happens next. Too much talk and no action. Trade the guy already. The only place where Marion will fit now is New York where it's his kind of system. It's the only place that has a run and gun system which will make Marion's abilities to flourish. Marion will never make it for half court oriented team. He has no half court offense at all. Once again he is over rated. He is basically is in the same molds as Tyrus Thomas, Noah, etc. He is an energy player who gets points from lobs, put backs, and fast breaks. D'Antoni will welcome him w/ open arms.

Jermaine O'Neal is on the decline plus his salary is hefty. He is just another former all star plaged by injuries and old age. He reminds me of Steve Francis and Jamaal Magloire. Miami needs to get back somebody that can help this and next season.

Shaq for Matrix, I don't think so...The suns made a huge profit from that deal because of Riley's ego. Shaq said Riley's offense is the worst he ever played for and the crappiest in the league.

Was Shaq right? Well, since Shaq has been back to a real offense, he's playing at allstar level again...i.e. great player with lakers, drop off with the heat, great again after the heat...

Same with Stan Van Gundy...Heat good with him, drop off after Riley returned.

It's Riley that was the main piece that needs to leave. Anyway, I think get Jermaine Oneal would be the best option. most athletic of the 3 and best size. Camby's cool, but how is he going to handle Shaq? Now you trade away the good Oneal for the second rate Oneal because you have no choice...great personnel moves Riles.

Cap space is important, and I don't want to discount how much, but sorry guys, nobody is going to touch JO with a 10-foot pole. The Raps gambled and lost badly on that idea - Riley isn't dumb enough to send over Marion for him.

January 15, 2009  08:58 AM ET

What about Lou Williams and Sam Dalembert? Lou is still in his early 20's and a PG, Sam is a very good defender with a heavy contract which expires in 2010. Sixers need an outside shooter who likes to run. Why not?

Why not trade with the Sixers for Lou Williams, early 20's pg at 4 MM a year and C Sam Dalembert around 11 MM per year that expires in 2010. Lou and score and Sam can defend big. Sixers need a player who can run and shoot the 3

Excellent comments as always and true to the point. Here's something to laugh about. Riley will be the head coach for the Orlando Magic and Stan Van Gundy will step down again after all star break.

No way man! Williams is a future stud, and Dalembert is a nice center, although not as good as others, he's still good. Both of them are younger than Marion too and probably worth more than just him at this stage now, cause Marion fell off big time. He's half the player he used to be. Cough cough, STEVE NASH cough cough.

Forget those 3 names and remember this name - Carlos Boozer. Boozer makes his home in Miami. His wife hates Utah and their son needs to live in a warm environment. Boozer has already indicated that he will opt out of his contract next summer. He is getting his knee scoped and cleaned out right now so he can have a clean bill of health at the trading deadline. Miami would welcome a sign and trade deal for Boozer. Then they wouldn't have to worry about the cap problem and finding a long term solution. Boozer fits into Rileys style of offense and is a 20 and 10 guy. Utah has a backup power forward that could slide into the starting position and Marion could start at the 3. It works for both teams.

January 15, 2009  09:42 AM ET

Miller is the only one of the three that makes any sense at all. Having said that, Riley will probably go after one of the other 2. Miller could have been had already.

Please no. Don't bring him to NY. I beg of you Mr. Walsh!

J.O makes 21 mil this season, to get him we would have to trade Matrix with Banks but J.O is to injury prone.
As i said a 1000 times Marion for Brad Miller and a scrub is the best scenerio for Wade County.
We keep B.M and waive the scrub.
New heat starting lineup: Chalmers, Wade, Beasley, Haslem and Brad Miller
Bench: Quinn, "Cooky Boi", Diawara/James Jones, Joel Anthony and Magloire
Non minute guys: Blount "the cheap cigar" and Banks (a scrub)
Hope Dorell and Mourning returns in time.

Boozer fits almost anywhere. The problem is, 1. THE HEAT DON'T HAVE A CENTER, and 2, they need to make this deal now if they are going to make a run this year. Boozer won't be available until June.
