NHL considering Rose Bowl, Vegas?

NHL executives, justifiably proud of the Winter Classic game at Chicago's Wrigley Field on New Year's Day, have been brainstorming about potential sites for future outdoor games. Chief Operating Officer John Collins said the league "might even be able to have a night game out at the Rose Bowl," Bloomberg News reported Wednesday. Technologically, it's possible. The NHL has invested more than $1 million on a refrigeration system and portable rink that can be set up almost anywhere. Dan Craig, the ice-making guru who helped craft a surface for Wrigley Field that was better than many NHL rinks, recently said an outdoor game could be played in California if a canopy were placed above the ice to shield it from direct sunlight. "I will never say never," he said, "because when I started with the National Hockey League 10 years ago, nobody told me that I'd be doing a hockey rink in Wrigley Field." There's nothing now planned for the Rose Bowl or anywhere else, according to Bernadette Mansur, the NHL's senior vice president of communications. She added that the Bloomberg story was inaccurate in saying NHL officials had visited Las Vegas to scout game sites when they were really discussing moving the annual awards show there from Toronto. She said the league has received inquiries about bringing the Winter Classic to New York, Washington, Detroit, Philadelphia and Minneapolis. Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell proposed a home-and-home series between the Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins at Penn State's Beaver Stadium.

Rose Bowl? Are you kidding? Seriosuly? New York, fine, Washington, fine, Detroit, fine, butthey were just in it, Philly, fine, Minneapolis, fine. But, the Rose Bowl??? I know it seats 112,000 people, but are you going to really fill it??? not bloody likely. You'll get 30,000 tops, and have an empty looking stadium to explain to someone. BAD IDEA!

What are they going to do, play in their boots. Spiny, I think you mentioned this in jest. Let's see, the diminutive one was worried about the temp at the chicago game. Now the midget wants to put a game outdoors where it is 100 degrees during the day. Am I missing something here. take over spined one.

Here we go, it was a nice little novelty when it lasted. Let's do Atlanta/Carolina at Lowe's Motor speedway and Florida/Tampa at Disney World. Fenway, Yankee Stadium, Ann Arbour, sure those a neat places to host the game. It's about going back to your roots, most kids played outdoors growing up, not outdoors in 80 degree weather!

30,000? Are you serious?
A game between the Pens & Flyers could easily bring in 100,000!

January 15, 2009  09:25 AM ET

Maybe they should try it. So when it fails, we all may be blessed with the fact the the midget would have no choice but resign. So actually it is a win win for everyone.

I believe MO was talking about a game in the Rose Bowl when he said 30, 000. There's no doubt a Pens/Flyers game at Beaver stadium would approach 100, 000.

This is the dumbest idea I have ever heard.

don't stop at california, I think they should have the next one in North Korea, followed by the Gaza strip, really get hockey out there...

Perhaps I should have qualified the statement as "the dumbest idea I have ever heard...today". I'm sure it will be topped shortly.

No, no, no. Coyotes/Kings in the Rose Bowl would be AWESOME!!!!!!

This would never happen, even Bettman isn't that dumb but the thought of it is stomach-churning and I grew up in SoCal.

most assuredly....

The Rose Bowl? The Winter Classic? I know it's hard to understand with the name of the stadium and all, but they do know that the Rose Bowl is held there right? On New Years Day? Just saying.

We all kidded about Florida or Vegas or Cali for the next Classic, but it appears they did not take us in jest. Let that be a lesson to all of us on T&R...Bettman does not understand jokes.

Your are joking with this statement, right?

January 15, 2009  12:22 PM ET

This is the best Idea I have heard yet! We can have S & R perform between the first period with their tigers and magic, between the second period have Cirque De Soleil perform one of their trippy performances, O and national anthems performed by....You guessed it Celine Dion!!

O and at the end of the game Viva Las Vegas by Elvis Presley just prop his dead body in the middle of the ice.

You couldn't pay me to watch that game..especially in the cold...that would be the last outdoor classic ever...
