Twins' Hunter 'sick and tired'

Torii Hunter has had enough. "I'm sick and tired of talking about it," the Twins' Gold Glove center fielder said. "I'm not talking about it anymore." So don't ask Hunter, who can become a free agent after the season, whether he believes he'll play in Minnesota next season.

The Twins would be hurtin' if they lost Hunter. I can't what for the rumor's to start on this one.

June 28, 2007  09:33 AM ET

I think he'll end up resigning with the Twins. If he doesn't, look for the Braves, Astros, and Cardinals to make a play for him

June 28, 2007  11:09 AM ET

Can you say Yankee?

June 28, 2007  11:31 AM ET

A centerfielder's defensive abilities are more valuable than any other player, with the possible exception of shortstop. I believe for that reason that Hunter is the best centerfielder in the game, although I'm sure virtually no one else would agree with me. The guy probably knocks .020 off of opposing teams batting averages just because of his amazing defensive skills.

I'd rather have a guy doing that and giving you around .300 and 30hr a year than an average fielder giving you .340 and 50 hr.

June 28, 2007  11:31 AM ET

My point is, any team could use this guy..

I've been a Twins fan all my life even though I live in North Carolina. From the days of Killebrew, Oliva, Jim Perry and my favorite player Bob Allison, it has always been fun following this great team. Torii Hunter is an absolute star. Unbelievable centerfielder, very good at the plate, and I'm sure a positive type veteran or example for younger players in the organization to look up to. His defense makes Cesar Tovar pale by comparison. And Twins fans know Tovar was pretty dang good in CF. I'd hate to see Hunter go if he does. It is unfortunate that some owners can't compete on a level field with more wealthy teams. Either they dont have the means or refuse to open up the purse. I'm also a lifelong Braves fan and there is a prime example of cheapskate owners shortchanging the fans by not paying players to stay. Perhaps the Twins and Braves both feel it doesnt matter because we have outstanding managers and GM's and we'll challenge anyway. Major league baseball needs to even things out someway. I despise Steinbrenner and others like him who try to buy a title instead of playing on an even field. The bigger clubs should have to subsidize smaller market teams like is done in other sports. A fair cap on spending for salaries each year would bring many more fans to the game and create fair play. Teams might have a better chance of keeping talent they have groomed in their system instead of losing them in the prime of their careers. Every year I pull for the Twins to kick butt and the ripoff guys like the Yankees to lose so the Boss can get a little more stomach ache for his overspending ways. Go Twins.

Anybody want Trot Nixon?

June 28, 2007  11:52 AM ET

All that happens now, Floyd. The problem is, the Twins don't want to pay him.

June 28, 2007  12:19 PM ET

Yeah, down with free agency!
No more free agents...how bright is that?

June 28, 2007  12:19 PM ET

if the low market teams had better attendance at games maybe the owners could afford to keep their star players (FLOYD)....perfect example: being a floridian i remember the marlins first world series title nobody showed up to games except for the playoffs ,result- FIRE SALE, everybody hated the owner ,but when you lose an estimated 50 million dollars the same year you win the world series you cant blame the guy..so to all you royals, pirates ,d rays etc.. fans out there" to **** bad..

June 28, 2007  12:21 PM ET

Yankees!

June 28, 2007  12:21 PM ET

They need pitching

June 28, 2007  12:26 PM ET

Can you say Yankee?

Yeah, it's always gotta be about the Yankees...every potential free agent is going to go to the Yankees...

June 28, 2007  12:31 PM ET

No. ijust have been waiting for hunter to become a free agent and hoping for years to bring him to the Yankees. Maybe I will get my wish next year. Maybe not. Relax.

June 28, 2007  12:36 PM ET

He's a classy guy. He's probably persecuted by the media for an answer.

Jim, All Starz is..well..hes right. New York is always mentioned as a destination as soon as a guy hits the market. That goes for both teams. If you want my opinion, I think the Yankees would do themselves well by getting Hunter. The only way I'd say get Jones instead would be if A-Rod opted out and didnt re-sign. They would need the righty power. But I dont see that happening of course.

June 28, 2007  12:51 PM ET

I think he would look GREAT in pin stripes................but not the Yankees pin stripes........I believe the White Sox need a center fielder who can hit.......

June 28, 2007  02:05 PM ET

Every single time a decent free agent, or potential trade comes up, inevitably a Yankees fans comes in and says something like 'Can anbody say Yankees' or 'probably go to the Yankees', or 'he'll be in New York', or something along those lines...THAT was my point...it's ALWAYS got to be about the Yankees or Boston, but moreso the Yankees.

June 28, 2007  02:36 PM ET

Regardless of all the suitors for Hunter, it would be a shame if he opted to leave Minnesota. He's a fan favorite and has a team that continues to get better and has a shot every single year.

In a related comment: as much as I'd rather have him come back to Shea, why don't the Yankees actively go after Xavier Nady? Aaron Rowand, maybe? Neither has Hunter's glove, but both can hold their own and have right-handed pop to go along with their tough, gritty style of play - something the Yankees could use after watching Bobby Abreu cry for his mommy everytime he gets anywhere near the warning track.

June 28, 2007  02:58 PM ET

Hey Torii Hunter should play for the balitmore he would help the team win !!!!!!!!!!!!!

June 28, 2007  03:14 PM ET
