Source: NFL upset with Steelers music

A league source who was watching the AFC title game contacted us by e-mail on Sunday night while Ravens' trainers were tending to running back Willis McGahee, who at the time possibly had sustained a serious head and/or neck injury. The source was livid regarding the fact that, while McGahee was laying on the turf, the folks who operate the sound system at Heinz Field opted to play rock music over the P.A. system. Specifically, the selections were "Down On The Corner" by Creedence Clearwater Revival, and then "Smooth" by Santana featuring Rob Thomas. Said the source: "There is a player on the field who may have suffered a life changing injury and the Steelers are playing party music. There are about five teams in the league that would engage in such horrific behavior. All others would cease all entertainment."

What do you suggest they play, a funeral dirge?

January 19, 2009  06:37 AM ET

I'm a Steelers fan and I agree... the music should have stopped altogether... but, hey, people make mistakes and I hope McGahee recovers fully...

I'd like to know who the so-called "league source" was who made the comments above! I thought his closing comment, "... the Steelers are playing party music. There are about five teams in the league that would engage in such horrific behavior. All others would cease all entertainment", was far more classless than whoever mistakenly continued to play music. Did he happen to notice the Steelers on the bench praying with their heads bowed or Big Ben going over to talk to Coach Harbaugh during the time McGahee was laying on the field? The "league source" sounds like a bitter Baltimore native who would say that Pittsburgh fans/management/ players are typically engaged "in such horrific behavior" is flat-out wrong and obviously biased!

QUOTE(#7):

Yeah man I heard that music too and I thought it was very disrespectful to be playing some stupid songs while a brother is lying out on the field with a broken freaking neck type injury. The boy may never walk again and they are playing a song about being on a corner and down in the streets. ****? Can you gets anymore messed up. It is probably because of MLK day or the inogoration festivites kickin in the countries. What kind of world are we livin in people? Cant we all just get along with each other?

Idiot.

IMAO!!! that's a good one, but I have some tracks of my own:

Death is not the end----Bod Dylan
The way we were---Barbra Streisand
Circle of life----Elton John....

na,seriously that was a nasty hit, helmet to helmet you might say,but it seems like he tried to turn his body and hit Mcgahee with his shoulders, but it was too late...I think the referees allowed lots of cheap shots(from both teams)...get well McGahee...

Man that was just so tacky and tasteless and classless.

January 19, 2009  08:29 AM ET

Starting the foot stomp and hand clap of "We Will Rock You"... now THAT would have been nasty.

You have 65,000 people in a stadium in a very tense and emotional game with alcohol, if the PA went dead silent and you let people to converse or begin to think it could have been much worse. Music calms the savage beast is what I have always heard. Classless would have been the HERE WE GO STEELERS Chant or the CHARGE Trumpet being played.
