Sources: Romo's bad practice habits upset Cowboys

05:40 AM ET 01.20 | According to five sources, several Cowboys offensive players lost respect for Jason Garrett for his failure to corral quarterback Tony Romo in practice. Romo, sources said, often forced throws in practice and often did not treat practice work consistently. The quarterback's practice habits were so bad, sources said, that they affected the way he played in games and could have factored into the offense's problems. Sources said Terrell Owens was upset that Romo directed more passes at tight end and close friend Jason Witten as opposed to the other receivers who he deemed open. Owens has declined to discuss that issue. The relationship between Garrett and his offensive players will be an important issue for the unit to work out. Garrett was unsuccessful in his bid to land recent head coaching jobs in Denver, Detroit and St. Louis. Specifically, the relationship between the mercurial Owens and Garrett is in question. Other receivers respect Owens and often share his sentiments. When asked about his relationship with Owens, Garrett said Monday, "I have a lot of respect for him, certainly as a player, we'll just leave it at that, OK?" Romo, according to a source, was also personally offended when Garrett was critical of his play late in the season.

I really enjoy reading about the problems with the Cowboys. Makes me feel all warm and tinglling inside.

As for Romo, whatever, it would be a shame to have him play well. More interesting with the the Cowboys screwing up the end of the year and TO going wild. I hope he and the cowboys continue their slide into irrevelance.

the cowboys will never be irrelevent!

as for romo this certainly doesnt suprise me

Maybe Shannahan will come in next year and be able to turn things around.

I can't blame ROMO though, the entire practice I'd be thinking about that nice piece I got from Jessica last night!

Oh no...This full article goes on to tell about how players' fines were dropped from $5k bto $100 for missed meetings and dropped down to $1k from $12k(under Parcells) for missed training sessions.

It then goes on to talk about other 'little big' problems like the tardiness to the airport for away games. The chartered plane left late for 5 away games this year and that last Philly game, the flight left over 1 hour late b/c players were late to the airport.

And all these guys are coming back next year. Every last one of them. And I'm to believe that 61 year old Wade is going to change? Give me a freaking break.

I'll continue to leave my new Stadium PSL money in the bank this year. Not spending it on this circus.

Is this a soap opera or what! Keep the dirt in-house, play football. The Cowboys are the UNTEAM!

January 20, 2009  08:00 AM ET

And of course they turn this into an Owens article.

January 20, 2009  08:14 AM ET

I've been trying to tell my players this every day, if you practice bad habits it'll show in your game, i.e. throwing it to your buddy just because he's there.

January 20, 2009  08:25 AM ET

Cowboys = employ the middle child from respective families only

I got berated for calling Romo overrated all season......are you starting to see it yet Cowboy fans????

January 20, 2009  08:35 AM ET

Maybe the Boyz should get Jessica to be there QB in 09'. Maybe she can throw a couple of "passes" to T.O.

January 20, 2009  08:40 AM ET

Include Boldin for the Cowboys also. They need more "ME" guys or thugs in the locker room. Add Ocho Cinco and Burress in the mix. Pacman will be back next year for sure. And add Michael Vick for a trade for Romo to make everything complete. And bring back Quincy as a backup. Also bring back that stupid kicker that they had and played for Indy.

January 20, 2009  08:42 AM ET

If you are the Offensive Coordinator, and you can't reel in your quarterback who's making bad play after bad play, you don't deserve to be a head coach!! TO realized these guys are scared to pull the trigger because it would have exposed ROMO!!

January 20, 2009  08:43 AM ET

Tony Romo is a bum.

January 20, 2009  08:47 AM ET

I think Jerry Jones should get Brett Favre, it would be the only way to employ a more overrated quarterback. He fits all the "must haves" for the Cowboys. 1) Probowl. 2) Overrated. 3) Guaranteed drama. Do it! Favre can teach Romo how to make smart throws under pressure, and Romo can show Favre how to play well in the playoffs.

No more Cowboys stories, please. These threads are like a bad accident on the highway. Horrible and sad, but you just can't help but look.

You have to produce...your making millions of dollars to perform your job and you can't produce anything good...its a shame, that whole team should be embarrassed

January 20, 2009  09:24 AM ET

Not sure what the problem is in Dallas, but I'm glad it's happening.

January 20, 2009  09:25 AM ET

This much drama doesn't belong on tv at all. But the fact is that there are a lot of egos on the star struck train wreck in Dallas. The already have my vote to sit at home again and watch someone else win the division. You cannot win a championship hoping everything is going to come out right when the clearly everything is coming apart. Mr.Jones didn't fire Wade because he didn't want to affect his new stadium next season. He still may be very disappointed either way.

Is Jerry Jones that insulated from what the fans read and hear about his team?

Is he that insulated isn't the question. Does he give a $hit. That is the question and no he doesn't.

January 20, 2009  09:32 AM ET

Tony Romo is a fraud. Below average QB. The whole Cowboys organization is a damn joke. Starting at the top with that idiot Jerry Jones.

January 20, 2009  09:33 AM ET

It seems that bad practice habits upset the Cowboys much more than bad behavior.
