07:54 AM ET 01.21 | Just hours after Oklahoma State announced Tuesday it had hired University of Miami defensive coordinator Bill Young, Hurricanes coach Randy Shannon made an unexpected announcement of his own: ''I will be looking for the best possible defensive coordinator to replace him,'' Shannon said in a written statement. ``If that candidate is not out there, those responsibilities will fall to me.'' Shannon, who took over as head coach in 2007 and led the Hurricanes to a 7-6 record this past season, served as UM defensive coordinator from 2001 through 2006. In 2001, after the Hurricanes won the national championship, he earned the Frank Broyles Award as the nation's top assistant coach.

i love how comments dont appear.

I am 100% fine with him calling the D, as long as the OC he hires gets the OC/Assistant HC title/job responsibilities

Randy Shannon has to be the biggest tool this side of Charlie Weis. Shannon has supposed to be this young breath of fresh air, but old Bobby Bowden and the 'Noles are passing him and the Canes.

So how exactly is he the "biggest tool" ? Please go in to detail.. your statement is rather broad and r3t4rded.

what's going on? The U has no coordinators....

Na, we will have an O coord VERY soon :)

the D coord i dunno.. i have a feeling RS might take it over

He should take it over. He was a good coordinator, and he will take a cue from Spurrier who coached his own offense at Florida. Sometimes head coaches leave too much of the coaching to the assistants.

Your orange glasses are clouding your vision. You seem not to recognize a train wreck when one happens right in front of your eyes!
Marve bolts after starting for 1 year. Young is leaving Miami after only 1 year. Nix stayed for 1 year. Now, during the height of recruiting, Shannon has ZERO coordinators.
da U is now a revolving door operation and the homers are blind to it.

You are wrong, i see a massive disaster in the making, but its not there quite yet.

Good riddance on the Marve issue, hes all about one thing.. himself, and im glad hes gone. I wish him well, but hes a trainwreck. By the way - its not like he was shafted while he was here, he started 11 games even when it was clear who the better QB was/is (and its not him).

Nix got fired (did you notice how awful our offense was this year? another good riddance!!!) Bubble screen and QB draw anyone?

Young is leaving to go make more money at his Alma mater (which is also fine with me, our pass D was suspect at best, and our run D was.. well non existant.)

If Randy Shannon takes over the D, hopefully he will return it to the top 10 in the nation every year like it was when he was the d-coord.

None of this helps recruiting of course, but the first priority IMO is to hire an O-coord (and from what im hearing, it will probably be done by Friday, but NO ONE knows who the finalists are besides RS himself)

Re: Nix: do you believe anything Nix said about Shannon restraining the offense? Why is it taking so long for a program like UM to replace an OC?

Re: Young: He goes from Kansas to UM then back to OSU...it's like an economic cycle. He goes from a mid-D1 school to a "top" D-1 school then back to a mid-D-1 school -- because he wants to go home all of a sudden?

You're very sensible with your concerns. It's like hearing bad news about a family memnber. You want to believe the best about the person but you have lingering doubts and don't want to be deluded about the truth. From the outside, it looks to me like Shannon has lost control, assuming he had control in the first place.

I think Shannon will get fired, but really because the schedule is too tough for them this year. At FSU, having to play at Va Tech and UNC, Ga Tech is on the schedule and then throwing in Oklahoma. The Canes could be looking at 4 or 5 losses easy next season. If that happens Shannon might need a one loss season after that to keep his job.

Out of the five games in its own division Miami should win at least 2. They have three games with the other division and should win 2 of them. With the way USF played last year the Canes should beat them if the offense comes through so that is a 5-4 record so far. The OU game is a loss so that is 5-5 with two more out of conference games left to play. Can't say if they should win or not since I don't know who they play, but 7-5 isn't out of the question. But I don't think Coral Gables will be happy with another 7-5 season.

How come like every third T&R is about the U??
