Varitek no closer to Red Sox deal

05:02 AM ET 01.23 | Representatives for the Red Sox and Jason Varitek are continuing to talk in the wake of the catcher's meeting with owner John Henry last week, but the sides appear no closer to a deal than they have been for weeks. But the nearer we get to spring training, the more likely that will all change. Though the Sox are not believed to have increased their offer to Varitek following the meeting between their captain and owner last week, the club is believed to have a proposal on the table for the catcher. Agent Scott Boras's negotiating history suggests that he would not accept any proposal until negotiations fully run their course, and the only deadline facing Varitek is the start of spring training. Even then, Varitek could resist being in camp from the start, though that would go against some of his general principles and philosophies. In the past, Varitek has taken great pride in maximizing time with his pitchers during camp.

He should have excepted arbitration, then if he had a good year he could have held them up. The Red Sox want him back and he wants to play for them but like the situation with the Yankess and Pettite, when a player comes off a bad or even so-so season they have no leverage. Like all players that are getting older they want to be paid more for what they have done in the past then what they will do in the future, even though they have already been paid for their past.

He will sign before Spring Training..

He's gotta be pissed at Borass since he now will make in 2 years what he could've gotten in 1 if he had just accepted arbitration.

who is going to pay any decent $$ for a 220 hitter ?

If he WANTS to play ball- he'll sign on the cheap
If he's looking for one more big payday- he won't.
It's simple

V-tec will be back with the Red Sox.

No one else really wants him or the draft choice they will have to give up to get him....

Varitek's value to the Red Sox extends far beyond his batting average. His leadership to the team and the way he handles both the young and veteran pitchers are better than any other cather in baseball.

i agree with your post but the bottom line is the guy simply is not getting it done on the field anymore. if he really wants to play he'll take less $$ and suit up. just as you pointed out his value lies elsewhere........he can provide the leadership and handling of the pitchers from the bench or as a coach even. theo's tryin to put the best 9 on the field that he can assemble. and tek's value has become one-sided.
