07:46 AM ET 01.26 | The NHL's best likely will be coming to Ottawa. While there won't be an all-star game next year because of the Vancouver Olympics and the 2011 weekend will be held in Phoenix -- a makeup date after the 2005 game was cancelled due to the lockout -- the mid-season celebration is expected to be played at Scotiabank Place in 2012. Senators president Roy Mlakar confirmed this weekend that owner Eugene Melnyk has been promised an all-star game.

Wow!! Exciting news to start the day.

January 26, 2009  08:38 AM ET

That is great news, so 2011 will be in Hamilton or Winnipeg, and 2012 will be in Ottawa! WOOO HOOO!

Pulitzer Prize material here......

January 26, 2009  09:54 AM ET

Anyone really think that Phoenix will still be in the NHL in 2011?
LilOsDad, LOL- Nice.

Who cares. It's the All-Star game. It is boring beyond boring.

It does take boring to insanely new heights. I almost threw up listening to all the brain-dead commentators this morning going on about how exciting the game was. What was exciting about that Kovalev love-fest? And this game is in real trouble if people actually thought Ovie wearing a tilley hat and shades was funny somehow. So freaking lame....

All-Star game means nothing. I sure as **** would never pay cash to go see it.

Slow day, T&R?

Agree completely. Not to mention that with this stupid fan voting system, you don't even get the players that should actually be there!

I agree, the All-Star game can be very boring, as can the skills competition.

The NHL needs to change the format. Drop the every team needs to be represented formula, it doesn't work. Make players get there based upon merit. Forwards based upon goals, assists, points or plus/minus. Defense on goals and assists. Goalies on GAA and Save%. Only allow 1 player at each position on each team be voted for by the public.

Make the game worth something, like home ice advantage in the Stanley Cup Finals.

Make the skills competition worth something. I like what Chara did, he and the other players involved in the hardest shooter competiton put up money for charity, the winning player gotthe money and gives it to his charity. Do the fastest skater, shooting accuracy and hardest shot like that. Drop the freestyle shoot-out, it wasn't very good. I liked the sudden death breakaway challenge at the end, that was good, and that should be a charitable event as well.

The YoungStars game needs to be revamped too. Give them full squads and 2 goalies each. Let them play a real game, after the skills competition. It will give lesser knowns a chance to shine. Plus, guys who were late call-ups and might have only played 20 games or so aren't in there, although they might be deserving, this might give them a chance.

Another game at scotiabbank place that I will be sure to miss...

January 26, 2009  02:09 PM ET

Exactly, this should be about merit, not about popularity.

January 26, 2009  02:29 PM ET

Watching that All-Star game was by far the worst thing I've done all month. So incredibly dull, and A Simple Plan to boot, ugh!

January 26, 2009  02:33 PM ET

That game sucked so bad, A Simple Plan didn't help matters either.

January 26, 2009  02:33 PM ET

oops.

January 26, 2009  03:02 PM ET

So next year the NHL all star game is in Phoenix... mmmm okay. 5 out of the last 9 years the all star game has been in southern cities and next year will be 6 or 10. I realize that everyteam deserves their chance to host the game but really, some of these cities shouldn't even have a hockey team. I'm glad Ottawa got it but phoenix is a joke.

With the limited amount of rookies every year, you can't expand the rosters to full size because there wouldn't be any merit anymore in being selected. Almost evryone will go.

January 26, 2009  04:36 PM ET

Forget revamping any of it. The Youngstars game is already played at a way more interesting level...called the World Juniors. The All-Stars...at the Olympics and World Cup. Skills comp? That was so infantile I am still laughing. Scrap it all and keep the so-called Winter Classic. At least it is competitive.

After the abomination in slow motion I watched in Montreal last night, they can hold the "All Star" event on Mars for all I care! That lame game was a pathetic excuse for showcasing what is supposed to be the NHL's best! That puky display was a disgrace to what the NHL is supposed to be all about!

Good for Babcock and the Red Wings for keeping their best at home!
