Scandal weakening Portland's MLS bid?
If you're a sports fan in Portland, you're a potential -- albeit distant -- victim of the Sam Adams scandal unfolding this week. Because in the wake of the fallout surrounding the news that Portland's mayor lied about having a sexual relationship with a teenager, a source inside the Major League Soccer offices told me this week that the professional league is asking a lot of pointed questions of the hopeful local ownership group. Remember, Portland is a finalist for an MLS expansion franchise and Adams was a big supporter of the effort, promising, "I will do everything within my power to bring MLS to this city." Right now, Adams has zero clout. He got himself elected, but that's all. In his quest for power, the fool cut himself off at the knees, one lie at a time. And so the challenge for the rest of us now is to make MLS think of Portland without thinking of Adams.

Give me all the first posts today! :-) I'd hate to see them fail out... so many cities to choose from... but Vancouver, Portland and St Louis seem to be the most promising places. It's going to be too bad that some of these places are going to get overlooked for Miami Redux. Oh well.

LOL, this is one funny story...
should truly have NOTHING to do with their MLS bid... unless the mayor is personally funding it.... but assuming he merely OK'ed it with some of the tax payers money, i dont see how him being dragged off to jail has anything to do with the final bid process...

I don't see the connection either, other than a credibility one. Maybe I'm naive, but I don't know how Portland can build an SSS with taxpayers money in the current economy (I think that was the deal, the city builds the soccer and baseball stadiums and Paulson puts teams there).

Ludicrous.

While the Mayor shouldn't be messing around with no youngin' shouldn't one be separate from the other?
Anyway, I hope this doesn't hurt their bid because that would be a shame to the fans of Soccer in Portland.

Also, I am assuming this teenager was under 18? Because if not then I don't see the problem (unless he was married of course and even then we all know that still aint' no big deal).

Buffalo had a dirty mayor that promised the city an MLB team for the funding to build a baseball stadium. It's actually the first "city-scape" stadium built, Camden is modeled after it. Anyway.... the team lost in the Expansion Derby to Colorado.... the rest is history. Regardless, what I'm getting at is that Mayor's sell teams to the public and the league.... and ours had gotten a stadium built off of the notion that the team would be able to compete to join the National League, which it did, but failed in the semi-finals.

...is a fine damn hip-hopping fool.
Well, the guy should have kept his pistol in his holster. The next thing we'll find out is that monies were also exchanged. Now, was this a relationship or a fling? Was this a one night stand? And, oh yes, of course he was 18 and it was consentual. Of course. Yeah right. That's the ticket.
Either way, looks like another liar has been elected. So sad.

LOL...wow...kind of speechless really...in a way, it almost sounds made up.
The kid's name is Beau Breedlove? It sounds like a writer wasn't even trying.
Google - an amazing tool to read the stories that are the background for FanNation T&Rs.

Beau Breedlove?
Damn. That could be a porn name right there.

Heck, you should see the 18 yr old kids name if you think that's funny: Harry Paratestis.

Also, isn't it sort of a porn name now? Gay porn? Who's to say if there were cameras involved or not?

Nah, that's really dude's name.
You can tell I didn't read this story because I didn't even know it was a guy the mayor slept with. I thought it was a teenage female.
Oh well, I still think the scandal should be independent of the bid.

Beau Breedlove could be the greatest porn name bestowed on an actual person since Dick Smothers, Jr. tried to get into the business with his birth name. No need to have the Dirk Diggler moment of inspiration there.
I'll back up a couple of other posters. One thing shouldn't have anything to do with the other. Then again, it's Portland, and they're notoriously weird about everything, so all bets are off.
In a perfect world, PDX and Vancouver would get the teams, if only to continue the Cascadia Cup derbies at the highest level. Too bad the world is far from perfect.

Remember Dick Trickle. I also knew a guy once named Richard Frost--but her preferred to be called Dick. And he had his doctorate, so he was called Dr Dick Frost. His name always sent a chill down my spine... Parents can be so cruel.

True story: I had a history teacher and coach in high school named Richard Stumph. The "H" is silent, and he went by a nickname for Richard. I'll let you figure it out.

Sorry...I know I was the cause of the way the T&R went but the power of Google also helped to not truly read the article I read about the whole scandal.
Oh well, I know I laughed quite a bit with the comments that followed.
