Chargers looking at L.A. market

07:52 AM ET 01.27 | The NFL is willing to consider a return to its Los Angeles roots. Evidently, so are the San Diego Chargers. While the league is kicking around the notion of playing the 50th Super Bowl in L.A. -- where the first one took place -- the onetime L.A. Chargers appear to be inching closer to a possible return to their birthplace. As is always the case with the on-again, off-again saga of the NFL's flirtation with the nation's second-largest market, nothing is written in stone. In fact, it's more like murky skywriting, completely at the mercy of the fickle winds of change. But more smoke signals came Monday when the Chargers signed a deal with Los Angeles-based Wasserman Media Group to market the franchise in L.A. and Orange County, a development that surely will be viewed by some as greasing the skids for a move north. There hasn't been a team in the L.A. area since the Raiders and Rams left after the 1994 season. "The bottom line is Los Angeles and Orange County are two of the most lucrative markets in the world," said Mark Fabiani, the team's point man on stadium issues. "There's no NFL team in those markets, and there's no reason the Chargers can't pursue those areas in these difficult economic times."

They don't know what to do with the 9er's chargers or raiders out there.... i say blow all three teams up...

January 27, 2009  08:17 AM ET

Not a good thing for Charger fans when low lifes like Irsay are for it...Watch out. It was his father who bought the Rams for $19 million in 1972 and traded them for the Colts then moved the Colts out in the middle of the night. And we all know where the Rams are now.The guys looking into this are not football people ie. the Rooneys or the Maras, they are Snakes.....

It was funny yesterday seeing some 9ers fans saying they are too "reserved, and classy", to share a stadium with the Raider fans! LOL

Honey, can you pass the Chardonnay? I need to dunk my pretzel in it before I wash down the funnel cake.

It seems that the NFL and alot of other corporations are using the economy as a excuse to get away with doing things that they wanted to do all along. Just like with the layoffs happening with other teams, the Chargers are using the economy to inch toward LA. I dont believe for a second that the NFL is hurting right now. Even with the economy, the NFL is still selling out games and making a ton of money.

San Francisco fans are "limp" if you know what I mean.

Skins went through Round 2 of layoffs yesterday.

I think they are worth a little more than 1 billion. Can't win games, but Snyder can cross-promote like a MF'er.

But you stay "hard" for the Cowboys and TO, and we all know what that means.

LA is a three-time loser in the NFL, having lost the Chargers, Rams and Raiders already. So, the NFL wants to throw another team at them? Please.

San Diego is a great city. Leave the Chargers there. If, and only if, another city fails to support its team should a franchise be allowed to even consider moving to LA. Jacksonville comes to mind.

LA, right now, does not deserve a team.

Jacksonville supports the Jags. Does ever single game sell out? No. But then thats how it is in most NFL cities (places like Washington, Green Bay and Pittsburgh excluded from that comment of course..) But Jax supports just as well as other cites that have long NFL histories (Cleveland, Cincinati, etc etc.) Quit bashing Jacksonville. Everyone has said the Jags are gonna move. Been saying that for almost a decade and the team is STILL THERE.

January 27, 2009  09:44 AM ET

Is there some specific reason why LA can't keep its NFL teams in order? LA couldn't keep the Raiders, Chargers or the Rams...****?

January 27, 2009  09:49 AM ET

Maybe they should do like the Angels, let the keep playing at Qualcomm and start calling them the Los Angeles Chargers of San Diego.

It didn't work out all the times it was tried before - why now?
