Kiffin chasing Notre Dame recruit

Lane Kiffin has had offseason victories only Daniel Snyder can match. Without coaching a game at Tennessee, he's been on the winning side of his share of battles with the best of the SEC, coming out on top of big name coaches like Steve Spurrier, Nick Saban, Urban Meyer, and Les Miles. While that certainly doesn't guarantee any success come fall, it's definitely having a positive effect on prep stars across the country. Now it looks like Kiffin is eying a top Notre Dame recruit.

Its Golic Jr?

January 27, 2009  09:12 AM ET

which recruit?

January 27, 2009  09:14 AM ET

At the end of the day, Tennessee has Kiffin, ND still has Weis. Advantage Tennessee...

January 27, 2009  09:22 AM ET

Nyshier Oliver from New Jersey. Apparently he had originally committed to Fulmer at Tenneesee but changed his mind when Fulmer was fired. It makes sense that Kiffin would want to bring him back to the fold. Even as an ND fan I wish the kid good luck wherever he decides to go...

January 27, 2009  09:32 AM ET

What a stupid article. Its probably not even true since the moron who wrote it couldnt even name the recruit. Probably another ND hater trying to make news.

January 27, 2009  10:13 AM ET

It may also be Byron Moore.... He just de-committed from SC.... And Notre Dame is supposedly in the lead for him right now... He is taking a trip to LSU as well... I just hope he ends up anywhere but those two places... So Tennesse would be fine by me

Part of the game. It's up to the kid to tell Kiffin to go take a hike.

Why does ND get all these great recruits and can't win, even with for the 1st time since i can remember last year they had a cupcake schedule.

It's the allure, it's the history, and the fact that you can play just about every game on national television.

Exposure is a hell of a drug.

yea great story, now which phukin recruit???

Exposure in a positive light is a drug. National TV humiliation is not so alluring. In all truth, ND has had good but not great recruiting classes, and they have played down to their competition, which has become increasingly easier. Except for the SC game, ND has stripped away its schedule of big time opponents, and that's a huge mistake. Losing close games to major opponents is not as bad as just barely beating San Diego State or losing to Syracuse.

My only addition to this might actually ruin your point.
In this era of modern TV, conference TV, 17 ESPN's, and unlimited internet coverage...I ask; what team or game on some level IS NOT on national coverage?

Exposure is every where now. Every team has exposure. Even the D-II schools are getting exposure. The idea of ND having a game on TV every week is no longer an advantage. I'm not going to say I'm positive about this, but I think at any point in the season, I can pick any team playing any game and find a way to watch it.

The only advantage that ND has (along with the SEC/CBS and Big10/ABC) is coverage on free airways. But it is getting harder and harder to find people (and college football fans) that are not "on the grid".

"Winning his share of the battles". What the heck is this guy smoking? Tennessee's class still doesn't look all that good and the only think he's done to Alabama is steal a coach who was having marital problems and whose wife had filed for divorce.

Saban could have kept that coach if he absolutely wanted to, there's no question in anyone's mind down here.

January 27, 2009  01:49 PM ET

Doesn't matter who the recruit is, just give us more info on Kiffin's wife.

C'mon guys, 'ya gotta read the article. Bang on the link at the bottom and you get: "Nyshier Oliver, a ???four-star??? prep safety from New Jersey, who last year was a commit to then coach Phil Fulmer, might be heading to Knoxville after all. Word on both Tennessee and Notre Dame recruiting sites have reported that both Kiffin and his father, former Tampa Bay defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin, have been putting the full-court press on Oliver and his family, and a commitment may be all but in the works."

January 27, 2009  02:21 PM ET

It's Nyshier Oliver. ND actually pulled his scholarship once they heard he took at visit to Knoxville.

So now, he's more than likely a Volunteer.

I agree that the Irish tend to play down to their opponents,
but that is something they have done for as long as I can
remember. It's almost like they have it in writing in the
schools laws against beating teams by 40 pts., you can look
at the past and see in games they are favored, how many
times they cover the spread. As far as the scheduling, they
have two teams that are constantly in the top ten ( SC &
Michigan), then BC, who is consistantly anywhere in the top
25, Mich.ST. who is in and out of the top 25 to 30. Then
the schools out of our normal schedule this past year and
coming 2 yrs. consist of teams in and out of the 25 to 30
(N.C., Pitt., Uconn., SoFlo., & Utah). Then you add the teams
that go through cycles on our schedule (Purdue,Stanford).
What do you want ND to do, play every top team from all
the BCS conferences, like everyone else in the country
(yeah right)? Scheduling runs in cycles and can never be
predicted, an example is Washington, when ND put them
on the schedule, I gaurentee they did not think their down
time was going to be this long. For the most part, ND has
been in the top 30 as far as SOS, as long as I can remember.

There's not much of anything in the mind of an Alabama fan in general. It usually goes a little something like this...

Bear Bryant.....duh.....football....making out with my sister...duh...(and then it's blank for an hour)
