Lincoln (Ore.) High School senior Ethan Johnson, the top-rated high school football player in the Northwest, orally committed to Notre Dame. Johnson, a 6-foot-5, 275-pound defensive end, had been deciding between a number of top college programs, including Michigan and USC. He is ranked the nation's 24th-best prospect by Scout.com and 48th by Rivals.com.

Hello everyone, thanks to Coach Weis and Brown, I have seen a major improvement recruiting in the last three years from 2006-2008. The last couple of years Notre Dame was not able to attract the defensive tackle and Notre Dame would convert an offensive line man to a Defensive tackle. However, in this years recruit they have recruited some of the best prospects in the nation. Notre Dame is due to win a bowl game and it is just a matter of time that they will win. Again, this is the year Notre Dame will upset ranked teams. I will be at the UCLA vs ND and also Stanford vs ND game. Future games I will attend Notre Dame @ USC I will definately sport Notre Dame gears and my friends are alums of USC, Stanford, and UCLA. That is how I was able to get free tickets. Goo Notre Dame!!!

Jamoris Slaughter - STARS: ****
Ht: 6-1 Wt: 180 40: 4.5

A very good open field tackler with good speed in coverage. He needs to be more aggressive on the field, but shows good instincts in coverage. Will need to get bigger to become a physical presence on the college level

Slaughter can play on either side of the ball, but most recruiters are more interested in him playing on the defensive side; he can bench 265 pounds, squat 330 and vertical jump 33 inches. He also runs track, but says he'll only play football in college. Slaughter has a personal best 10.9 100m and a 49.0 400m.

Slaughter finished his junior season with 66 tackles, four interceptions and three fumbles caused.

EThan Johnson Stars:*****
Strongside defensive end
Portland (OR) Lincoln

Ht: 6-foot-4 (Events)
Wt: 266 lbs
Forty: 4.8 secs
Bench reps: 18
Vertical: 28 inches
Shuttle: 4.44 secs
GPA: 3.27
Class: 2008 (High School)

Johnson is an effort player that also has the physical ability, coupled with outstanding technique, to be the top pure defensive end on the west coast. He's best when he's on the strong side, overpowering tight ends. Johnson has a phenomenal first step, and is able to stay low enough to win the leverage battle at the line of scrimmage. Runs very well for a player his size.

Johnson logged approximately 80 tackles and 10 sacks as a junior. Early recruiting season buzz has him as being the best propsect to come out of the state of Oregon in several years; He benches 330 pounds and claims a 30-inch vertical jump.

Good for ND. Ethan will enjoy losing in the Humanitarian Bowl.

In addition, rumored to be following suit in the next couple of days are 5 star receiver Michael Floyd and 4 star safety Dan McCarthy. We shall see maybe by today or next week.

Well, that streak will end soon and with the new defensive co-ordinator coach Brown sure can recruit defensive players. While, Coach Weis recruits improves on the offensive side of the ball. Again, This will be the year that Notre Dame will upset ranked teams.

what happens when these high school kids see USC blow out Notre Dame by 31. Then they will be calling Pete to see if they can change committments

June 29, 2007  02:20 PM ET

If ND ever joins a conference and plays a real schedule than maybe we can see if they are any good. When you have big games against army and navy but don't do anything against USC and Michigan than scouts start to wonder about you as a player just like their runningback from last year.

June 29, 2007  02:35 PM ET

why join a conference when you don't have to? that would be dumb to share all that cash with other schools. buckybadger you wish your team could be independent. remember where the man who saved your program came from.

keep on hatin' while charlie loads up on talent over the next few years. the irish may not do much this year, but watch out in 2008 and beyond.

June 29, 2007  02:58 PM ET

Well, you cannot assume until we see that game because this is the year that Notre Dame will upset Ranked teams and that would be fun to watch.
Here is a little history of the Rivalry. Well, the most lopsided win was in 1966 ND 51 - USC 0 and so far the record speaks for itself. Well, I cannot say anything until after the game day and Notre Dame is not ranked this coming season. While USC is ranked #1 and we shall see it during game day. Goo Notre Dame!!!

WOW that's 3 recruits that ND took away from uofm!!!!

Also, that's 4 kids out of the West.

These guys are 4* & 5* recruits!!!!!

HERE COME THE IRISH!!!!!!!!

June 30, 2007  12:49 AM ET

Another big recruit. Weis, Brown, and Polian are recruiting geniuses. ND will have the number one class this year.

June 30, 2007  12:17 PM ET

The only thing that matters in this rivalry is the last two years with Pete Carroll and Charlie Weiss, what happened in the 40's doesnt matter. USC will beat Weiss and send him back to the NFL.

June 30, 2007  01:14 PM ET

Nice job of spelling Weis incorrectly there dallas/trojan. Either you STILL can't spell the guy's name after 3 years of putting up with his name, or thats a good dig - you certainly know how to get under ND fan's skin.

I have to admit, USC fans aren't going bonkers like UM fans have with he venom after a kid they offered picked ND. UM fans are pretty quick to shoot venomous denial this year, since we've stolen a couple life long fans of their and a couple UM leans (Hunter, Clelland, Slaughter, Blanton).

That said, this kid is a consensus top 50 player. A perfect fit for what the Irish are trying to do on defense. At 6'4" 266 (rivals), he's not quite big enough to be ready to play 4-3 tackle, but his game isn't really suited to come off the edge in the 4-3 either. Came away with MVP honors at the Michigan camp about a week ago - they said his first step was incredible, was getting by lineman before they could get out of their stance. Perfect build and type of game for the 3-4 end.

With the way ND has sucked it up on defense, and horrendously botched their recruiting efforts on the defensive line (we've had to switch 3 offensive lineman over this year to patch holes there its so thin right now), this is a signature get for ND. 5 DL gets this year, topped off with a top 50 recruit? It definitely helps, and it makes a statement when you can go into a state as far away as Oregon, and fight off your top two rivals (USC and UM) to get a guy ON DEFENSE for a change.

July 1, 2007  11:50 AM ET

sc fans don't want to look at the overall record between ND & sc, I don't blame them it's in ND's favor. Just as they want to point out the last 5 years. Most of them rip on Charlie because he's over weight, I'd say they understand ND has a REAL COACH. So things are not going to go sc way ALL the time.

You're only as good as you're weakest player/ coach, now with Corwin Brown in charge of the Defence, ND is close to becoming a complete team. HERE COME THE IRISH!!!!!!!!!!!

July 1, 2007  03:17 PM ET

It doesnt really matter that you guys took a top 50 player. Its not like ND cant get anybody, but they pale in comparison when it comes to recruiting to the likes of Pete Carroll and Urban Meyer. I think that Notre Dames biggest problem has been the secondary is so slow on defense that even USC's TE's can get past them. Oh yeah, mr Irish calves why dont you inform Sexton how to spell defense, oh yeah, Notre Dame doesnt know that word

July 2, 2007  01:43 AM ET

Why even bring up the word sexton? You make it sound that they are not interested in Notre Dame football. Your so called sexton do attend home games at South Bend, Indiana. Sexton are good people and no need to be put these guys down. Show some respect to these people and no need to be arrogant/ignorant. With all do respect of course.

July 2, 2007  01:45 AM ET

Oops, my bad.
