Williams questions Maryland AD

06:31 AM ET 01.28 | Maryland athletic department officials and men's basketball coach Gary Williams engaged in an emphatic back-and-forth yesterday over who made the decisions that led to two heralded prospects deciding to attend other schools last offseason, a debate that culminated with Williams questioning the credentials of a senior associate athletic director. The latest chapter in the strained relationship between Williams and athletic department officials comes at a time when Williams's recruiting efforts are under scrutiny because Maryland is facing the prospect of missing the NCAA tournament for the fourth time in five years. Kathy Worthington said Williams alone made the decision to grant Gilchrist a release from his scholarship by signing a document that enables a player to speak with other schools about transferring. Worthington provided The Washington Post with a copy of the release, which is signed by only Williams and dated May 3, 2008.

OK, so who should replace GW?

Let's see. . . 4 Sweet 16 appearances in the past 10 years. . . 1 NC. . . post-season tourney every year . . . Develops players. . . develops people. . . actually convinces people to go to College Park (an accomplishment in itself). . . I hope the Terps can him; then we won't have to worry about them beating Duke or UNC, because they'll revert to their historical status as also-rans.

Between D.C., Northern VA, and Baltimore, Williams should at least be able to lure a five-star player to the Comcast Center every few years -- perhaps a few that don't have the massive egos that he hates. Just look at how Georgetown has cleaned up the area in the past few years . . . or look at how 'Cuse and UConn have been plucking big names for the past 15 years. 3-star players won't win you another Championship.

One rumor flying around the south is that Oliver Purnell is and has been very interested in the job being from Maryland and being an assistant there. I've also heard that he hasn't been real happy with the support from Clemson this year desipite being highly ranked. RUMOR MILL I know but he would be a great replacement.

Allen Iverson, J.J. Reddick. Alonzo Mourning, J.R. Reid, Joe Smith, David Robinson, Grant Hill, (currently: Scotty Thurman{Villanova}; Ben Dvis {UNC}. Bump Maryland, UVA can't recruit worth a ****!
