Gary Williams on way out at Maryland?

05:51 AM ET 01.29 | These should be the final months of the Gary Williams era at Maryland. By mutual consent, with some dignity and appreciation, if possible. But after the war of words between Williams and the athletic department - and the needlessly personal nature of it - how can Williams come back after this season? How can he and his now-obvious nemesis, athletic director Debbie Yow, coexist? What kind of future can anyone connected to the school or the team expect if they can turn the discussion of a couple of not-so-consequential recruits into a public spitting match? The window is all but closed on any reconciliation.

Maryland needs a change, im sick of watching this grown so called intelligent high paid professional curse young men and his coaching staff for his short comings. Does he truly know basketball or is cursing out children his thing, thats why he cant get the big recruits, who wants to be cursed out all the time over a game.

too bad for MD if they let GW go. he's been great for the program and did it the right way. all good things come to end i guess.

January 29, 2009  09:08 AM ET

I love GW but it's pretty obvious things need to change. They were one of the few teams who could not cash in on a National Championship with top flight recruits year after year (hello, Nik Caner-Medley). I'm not a fan of Debbie Yow either, who's idea of a sports program includes giving out 6th place trophies.

January 29, 2009  09:32 AM ET

The fact is that Gary Williams is not resigning and the U of MD Athletic Dept does not currrently posses the monetary funds to buy out his contract.

January 29, 2009  09:41 AM ET

I never understand why people say this "cash in on a national championship" what the hell does that even mean??

What other teams couldn't "cash" in?? Florida is struggling since winning two, Syracuse and UConn really haven't done anything since winning one. Ilinois made it there, but hasn't been very good since. Look at how many teams remain a powerhouse for a long period. Duke, UNC, UCLA are the only real consistants in college basketball. Even those teams had some rough years recently.

Every single program recruits "busts" or has a group of players that weren't as good as previous ones, has up and down years. Maybe it is time for Gary to move on, I don't really know the answer that question. I do know that he got Maryland 2 final fours, and a national championship, and of course people won't be satisfied with that if you start missing out on the NCAA a few years later.

I just hate when people use the phrase "cash in on a national championship" Do you just walk into kid's houses and say "i won a national championship, so come to Maryland" Is that how Jim Boehiem recruits or Billy Donovan "hey son, I won 2 in a row with a group of 5 guys that is almost impossible to come by and because of that, you will go to Florida so I can cash in"

So, no you're not smarter than me

January 29, 2009  10:28 AM ET

This would be a travesty. Absolute BS letting a coach go after winning a national championship.....as he obviously can get it done. Look what the ACC alone holds for MD....no one gets better recruits than NC and Duke. NO ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yet NC and Duke cant win every year with 10 deep McDonalds All Americans. tee hee...had to get a Duke dig in there.

It took Boehiem 30 years to win one. MD would show little class pulling this move.

I would like to personally thank the Baltimore Sun for its constant and needless urge to stir the pot at UMD. Thanks to their rampant speculation in their opinion pieces, they are ripping the heart right out of the program. The one thing that can cause a team to quit on their season faster than anything else is the notion that their coach is getting fired.
While I agree that Gary has done a poor job of recruiting and the Maryland program has been on a stead decline that is slightly steeper than most national championship programs, The Baltimore Sun has done everything within its power to exacerbate the situation. Maybe the program is in need of a major coaching change. However, The Sun is doing its best to unlock the proverbial door that Gary Williams will soon be shown.
Its a shame that the man who single handedly brought the UMD basketball program out of the darkness might be unable to leave on his own.

January 29, 2009  10:40 AM ET

i am currently a UMD Senior and am pleading Gary gets the axe. Hes an average coach who got lucky with Juan Dixon's 02 Team. Since winning a national championship 6 years ago, Gary Williams has missed the tourney 3 teams and about to miss it for the 4th time in the last 5 years. That is simply unacceptable. The talent level just isnt on the court and its because of recruiting. How can you not recruit out of the ACC and Balt/DC? In the last 5 years we have seen MD and DC products such as Carmelo Anthony, Rudy Gay, Kevin Durant, Michael Beasley, Ty Lawson, Joey Dorsey, Nolan Smith, Austin Freeman, Donte Greene, and a plethora of others leave the state. Not to mention his recruiting debacles of the last 5 years, Travis Garrison, John Gilchrist, Jai Lucas, and the two guys from this year. If you cant recruit, you cant win! I personally would love John Calipari as a guy to bring in. He is a natural born recruiter and a hell of a coach, also coming to the ACC has a chance to legitimize himself with Coach K and Coach Roy, something he will never be able to do in with Memphis in the C-USA

January 29, 2009  10:48 AM ET

Maryland, even when they won the National Championship, did not do it with top recruits. They had mostly middle of the pack recruits who played well together and stayed 4 years. It was pretty much a perfect storm that led to them winning it all. The best kids in the ACC will continue to end up at UNC or Duke. Maryland can't even get the good recruits in Maryland, let alone nationwide.

January 29, 2009  10:49 AM ET

The real issue here is that after the National Championship, Gary's top assitant Jimmy Patsos went to Loyola (MD) to be their head coach. He was the real recruiter for the Terps for years. Without him the recruiting has been terrible.

January 29, 2009  10:50 AM ET

rpicone was dead on.

January 29, 2009  10:54 AM ET

The Baltimore papers have been free and easy to take their shots at Maryland since their home grown coaching choice Bob Wade took over the Terps and then proceeded to get them on probation...the well was so poisoned that it took almost five years before a top notch Charm City HS player went to Maryland. Their caterwauling is nothing new.

Perhaps a new face is needed at MD. Debatable. However, as noted above Williams is going nowhere. There are no signs he will be resigning, and it is doubtful that Debbie Yow can raise the $$ to buy him out.

January 29, 2009  11:00 AM ET

Calipari at Maryland would be a hell of a spark for that program. Isn't day dreaming fun?

January 29, 2009  11:03 AM ET

He's done...

January 29, 2009  11:05 AM ET

rpicone is too young to remember what the program was like before Gary arrived. He's also too busy downing drinks at Bentleys to understand the ramifications of Gary's dismissal on the program.

Like I said, there is ZERO chance of Gary getting the axe. The AD does not currently have the funds to buyout his contract in a fiscally responsible manner.

January 29, 2009  11:07 AM ET

Earth to College Park--Lexington, Kentucky called and wants their supply of memory-erasing pills back. Hey, by all means dump Gary Williams, and on behalf of the rest of the ACC, I'll be the first to thank you and the first to snicker behind your back. Perhaps Bob Wade is still available as a replacement.

January 29, 2009  11:11 AM ET

Let's face it, Maryland isn't a high profile position. Williams was a nut case who somehow lucked into winning a championship. Otherwise they're relegated to second tier ACC right now and once they get the crazy guy out they'll have trouble getting in a big name coach, recruiting will suffer even more and then they'll completely spiral to where that program will be an ACC bottom feeder.

January 29, 2009  11:28 AM ET

Although not attending UMD, I have been a fan of Maryland Basketball for years starting with John Lucas, Len Elmore, and Tom McMillan and going through Lenny, Keith, Jeff and that group all the way up to now. Whoever said that Maryland is second tier is on drugs. The right coach can recruit in this basketball rich area and be a top 20 program with consistency. Williams is a good coach. And at one time, he could recruit talent. Remember that recruiting is not just getting top 50 talent but also getting guys to fit a system. The guys that play for Maryland now are gritty but they do not fit Williams' full court style defense or motion offense. Just like Bobby Knight at Indiana, he's past his usefulness. Nothing against him, but it's time for a new voice and someone who can recruit between Baltimore and Richmond.

January 29, 2009  11:45 AM ET

THe death nell for the vast majority of programs is in-state recruiting. I was born and raised in Richmod, VA and I have seen the up and down slide of UVA basketball. The Ralph Sampson Years and the Cory Alexander Years of making deep runs in the tournament were done in large part to having home grown talent on the team. UMD is no exception to the rule. The state of VA has produced: Allen Iverson, J.J. Reddick. Alonzo Mourning, J.R. Reid, Joe Smith, David Robinson, Grant Hill, (currently: Scotty Thurman{Villanova}; Ben Davis {UNC}. If Coach Williams does not find or make a way for home grown talent to attend UMD, he will loose his job.
