Does Beckham have an out clause?

06:30 AM ET 02.03 | The sad reality is that contract or not, if David Beckham wants to leave, MLS may not have a choice. As it is, you have to wonder what his mind-set will be when he walks away from one of the best clubs in the world to return to the Galaxy, a team that hasn't sniffed the playoffs in his two years there and last year was the worst defensive team in MLS. There are rumors that Beckham has an out clause after the third year of his five-year deal, but if he leaves after two years the league may not recover from the embarrassment for a long time. And any compromise will be just as humiliating. If Beckham wants to stay in Italy, MLS may be forced to allow him to finish the Serie A season and return to the Galaxy in May. But that would be worse than him never coming back because it would make MLS look like a decidedly minor-league outfit that kowtows to the big clubs around the world. Beckham said part of the reason he signed with MLS was to raise its profile around the world. If he leaves now, a lot of the credibility the league has gained the past 13 years may be lost for good.

interesting though, nobody is looking at it from the angle that he played 2 years in the MLS and did not lose his game, he is still ready to jump back into AC Milan after spending two years in what some people think is a soccer wasteland... i'm staying positive

Who cares? When is MLS going to realize it does not have to be one of the best leagues in the world in order to be competetive. Accept what you are and move on. It's not the worst or the best, the fact that Beckham played here is enough; if he wishes to move on, let him. Do you think the Austrian Bundesliga would prevent a star player from moving to AC Milan?

face it...he never came here for the soccer...it was simply a place where Posh could shop ..

LA seemed like a good place to wrap up his career, when no one else wanted him.
Why waste talent in MLS? It will never be more than a feeder league.

yes, b/c a simply flight from spain/italy/england to LA/NY/CHI couldnt solve that same problem...

i would think moving to the US, buying a house, buying furnishing and then shopping would be a larger waste of money....

this is just another ignorant article who truly knows very little if anything about the league...

the league was fine without beckham and it'll do fine without him.... LA need to sell him and make some money on the deal.... LA and the league profited for 2 years of this MARKETING TOOL we may as well get so more from it from a transfer fee.....

i love how this report stated the ALREADY REPORTED as speculation...

"There are rumors that Beckham has an out clause after the third year of his five-year deal," this has already been reported as FACT....

"you have to wonder what his mind-set will be when he walks away from one of the best clubs in the world to return to the Galaxy, a team that hasn't sniffed the playoffs in his two years"
you mean in 07 where they were a mere win away from making the playoffs??

yes, LA have been BAD... but i kinda of blame that on them getting beckham and a supporting cast who can finish his opportunities rather then fielding a team from GK to FOR..... with Beckham and LD out of the picture, LA can reestablish themselves and rebuild ALL around the field

Why is this news? Except to piss me off every morning when i come into work and see becks "O" face....

b/c beckham not only sells out arenas in the US, but he also brings in the hits to T&R

As "the real.." stated above, the fact that he was able to maintain a certain skill level while playing in MLS speaks to the overall quality of the league. In fact when he came to LAG from Madrid, he had less interest in him than he currently does. So I would argue that MLS has revived a declining career rather than serve as a retirement home that the typical MLS basher on this site would like to describe the league as.

Only a fool compares a league with the type of history and tradition that Serie A has to MLS at this point. So the fact that the glamour club of one of the top leagues in the world is anxious to sign a player from MLS speaks to progress, not the apocalypse.

Since Milan is really so high on keeping Becks, see just how much they are willing to pay and get every dollar you can from such a wealthy club. The more I have thought about the possible effect on the league, the less I think his presence matters. MLS got some publicity and drew people, but my guess is that the average sports fan won't even notice and that it's not going to change anyone's mind about MLS. The other day, someone asked me if Beckham was still here; and she knows nothing of what's been going on in this saga. It was just off her radar, and something in the conversation made her think of him. And she is a big sports fan.

I don't agree!!! If Becks continues his current pace at Milan, stays until the end of the season in Italy, and Milan happens to win the table! Then when he comes back to MLS, every seat in the league will be filled when the Galaxy are in town once again..... And what if he keeps up his current with Milan, 2 goals and 2 assist in 4 games, wins Serie A and then dominates MLS and won the MLS CUP? Is it a possible footballer of the year?

Beckham hasnt dominated the MLS since he's gotten here... outside of his pinpoint crosses and free kicks, he's not that spectacular.... i HIGHLY doubt a short stint in Milan would truly improve his odds of being a dominant player here.... and no he wont get FotY

February 3, 2009  11:31 AM ET

In order for Beckham to play to his potential, he needs to be surrounded by talent. He doesn't have that talent in LA. It was a nice gimmick, but he needs to stay in Italy

Could not have said it better myself. Do you really think Europe has a chance at a comparable NBA league, or Russia a comparable NHL? North America will never compete the same level in soccer - it's about time people accepted that, and be happy with the product we are able to field (or find something else for entertainment).

Wake up , This is MLS.... YES MLS
( MLS is synonymous to Iverson's rant in the NBA a few years ago when he brought up the word "practice" many times in his after game rant.

This isn't a question about MLS and Becks - this is an issue of Becks and the LA Galaxy. It would be best for the Galaxy to agree on a nice transfer fee and be done with it. Why would you want any player - even with the name of Beckham on the back of his jersey - come back to a club he does not want to come to. It would be toxic for the club and the upcoming season to see a player not playing his best because he would rather play somewhere else and at this point he is so fixated on making the English National team and competing for a spot on the 2010 WC team that he could care less about the LA Galaxy, especially when the manager of the WC team tells him if he remains with the LA Galaxy he will not make the WC team. His priorities lie elsewhere, LET HIM GO!!! Get the transfer fee, free up a DP slot and use that to find a player or two, or three that want to come to the LA Galaxy and play. MLS is only in its 13th season - there is no way in hell that we can compare this league with the likes of the Premiership, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A, etc. These leagues have close to 85 - 100 yrs. of existence vs. our 13th. Please no comparison. Let's be happy that the MLS is weathering the economic climate so well right now and moving forward with expansion and soccer stadiums and creating a path for this league to last in years to come. I for one will not be sad to see Beckham go and I am an LA Galaxy season ticket holder and supporter since 1996, plus I sit in the front row behind the Galaxy team bench and see the guy all the time. Hell, I would be happy that way I don't have to listen to the damn girls screaming his name throughout the match. I would be more sad to see Donovan go then Beckham - that would be more of a loss to LA and MLS than Beckham. My 2 cents. Cheers
