06:39 AM ET 02.03 | North Allegheny High School football player Ryan Schlieper has backed out of a verbal commitment to Maryland and will instead play at Pitt. Schlieper, a 6-foot-5, 275-pound offensive lineman and a member of the Post-Gazette Fabulous 22, had committed to Maryland last summer. But he always held out hope that Pitt might offer a scholarship. The Panthers offered Friday and Schlieper accepted last night. He will sign with Pitt tomorrow, the first day high school players can sign a binding letter of intent with a college. Schlieper said Maryland was upset.

I love how when a teenager changes his mind, during a period where teams are NOT allowed to sign them, this becomes news. Its not a commitment until its signed. Neither the college or the athlete is under any sort of binding commitment until signing day starts and they actually sign.

Yes, the school and the player may "verbally" agree and commit, but neither is under any legal obligation at that point to follow through. Well, at least in terms of the NCAA. Otherwise, payers would be formally allowed to sign whenever they want.

Hey he is from PA and wants to play for the best team in that state. When they finally ponied up that scholarship, it became a no-brainer.
