Buyer's remorse for Bucs' Simms?

Quarterback Chris Simms is asked if he would've signed a two-year, $5-million extension with the Bucs last December had he known all that would transpire during this turbulent offseason? "I don't know. I would've definitely re-evaluated the situation, " Simms said. ""That's an honest answer." The 26-year-old lefty has an uphill battle to reclaim his job from 37-year-old Eagles free agent Jeff Garcia, who has been declared the leader in the clubhouse by coach Jon Gruden.

did the bucs get new unis for this season?

June 29, 2007  10:17 AM ET

2.5 million per year for a backup job isn't that bad, Chris.

June 29, 2007  10:22 AM ET

Simms, you're not that good, yet. Go out and win your job and stop trying to coast on your dad's legacy.

June 29, 2007  10:23 AM ET

I'll hold a clipboard for $2.5 mil.

As far as uniforms looks like a practice jersey to me...
I think that Gruden going with Garcia is a good choice it wil allow Gruden to get the type of offence that he wanted. Also since Garcia is used to a West Coast style of play he will be what we need to hopefully turn the tide.

Sims is soft, just like Steve Young said last year, and those kind of players have a real hard time getting other players to buy in. Softness makes for poor leadership, and at qb, being a good leader is just about as important as any of the other tools you gotta have. Riding his dad's legacy is right, except his dad wasn't soft. Garcia is hard as a cofin nail, and he'll give Sims someone to learn how to really lead a team from.

Chris Simms is a fine young man who has been unfairly disparaged because he happens to be the son of a famous quarterback. The courage and resolve he demonstrated while playing with a ruptured spleen, the loyalty and admiration he enjoys from his teammates (who elected him as their captain), and the high-velocity pinpoint spirals that he rockets all across the field have nothing to do with a privileged upbringing.

The competition for the starting job is not over.

When it is, Garcia may still emerge the victor. Little Napoleon loves the guy, and has always despised Simms. When Simms was drafted by John McKay, Chucky was insensed.

For Chucky, Simms represents every inferiority complex that he has ever struggled with, starting with height.

Just one year ago, Gruden was telling the world that Simms was ready for greatness.

Now the kid is without a spleen and a prayer.

Along about the third game, though, when Chucky watches another Garcia flutterball get picked off down field, he'll tell Chris to pull his helmet on and turn on the rocket launcher.

my regret is having to see those gawd awful uniforms

Anyone on here ever notice Jeff Garcia, who I think is a funny guy, kind of acts like a poser. I mean, he's good, he makes plays, but the way he talks and acts is not characteristic of his look. He just acts like he's trying to be cool. I dunno, just a thought. I always laugh when someone interviews him. He always, puffs up a little then starts talking, almost like he has a ear piece in and someone is feeding him all the answers. It cracks me up!

June 29, 2007  11:06 AM ET

Hey man, Garcia's no slouch. He's a guy who couldn't throw a 40 yard spiral if his life depended on it, yet he's developed all the other skills necessary to be a winning NFL QB. Back in San Fran I can't remember how many times I watched him dive headfirst into a linebacker 3 times his size for a few extra inches. Gritty, tough, smart, energetic, accurate with short passes. He's not pretty, he's just a winner.

June 29, 2007  11:09 AM ET

what the hell is he wearing?

June 29, 2007  11:11 AM ET

Those are some, ummmmm, interesting uniforms.

June 29, 2007  11:17 AM ET

Why would anyone sign an extension to stay around Gruden?

June 29, 2007  11:28 AM ET

Yea they were saying his contract is comming up after this season. We will have to see what he has planned or its bye bye

June 29, 2007  11:30 AM ET

I think I know where our flag football jerseys were sent by mistake.

June 29, 2007  11:34 AM ET

Ok, their uniforms are ugly, at least according to you crack-heads. What does that have to do with the story dip-****?

June 29, 2007  11:42 AM ET

Simms just isn't what the Bucs need. Garcia will give this team a spark.....Poser or not.....He is good. They need to look in another direction for the future. Sorry Tom Six....I don't know Simms personally but, I just don't think he is the answer and neither does Bucs Management.

June 29, 2007  11:50 AM ET

tyler ellrodt relax ....breathe.....center your chi.

June 29, 2007  02:03 PM ET

Simms hasn't proven a thing. If anything, he should be grateful Gruden and co. agreed to overpay him after about 3/4 of one productive season. If Chris Simms can't beat out Jeff Garcia, a respectable, but unspectacular qb (remember, this guy lost starting a starting job in Cleveland), he should look in the mirror, not blame the organization.

And when was the last time Cleveland had a solid offensive line? The '70's?
