Quarterback Dontae Aycock of Tampa, Fla., who had given a "secret commitment" to Georgia Tech three weeks ago, had his scholarship offer taken away by the Jackets. Aycock was warned by Georgia Tech of the consequences if he took an official visit to Auburn last weekend, according to his coach. "Auburn called him on Thursday and offered him on Friday," Chamberlain coach Brian Turner said. "He was told [by Georgia Tech coaches] that if he took the trip [to Auburn over the weekend] the scholarship would be pulled. "He went on the trip and, I guess, he's going in a different direction now." Turner said he and his staff advised Aycock to keep his word to Tech.

I heard he gave a double secret commitment.

"secret commitment?"

as oppossed to the "double secret probationary commitment"

It's probably best for both. The kid is young and stupid and agreed to the "secret commitment" before checking out other places. GT is old and stupid for thinking a teenager wouldn't be curious.

Is this like "early admission"?

February 3, 2009  09:00 AM ET

Slow news day when we have to cover when a teenager changes his mind.

I like it. If you're going to commit, commit and stand by your word. At 18 you should be learning to be a man, and should stop acting like a kid. These "kids" are taught the world is their oyster and their actions don't have consequences. Then they're surprised when their actions as adults do have consequences. He was told if he looks elsewhere, his offer would be withdrawn. He looked elsewhere and his offer was withdrawn. Next time someone tells him his actions will have consequences, he'll listen.

Why commit somewhere if you are wanting to visit other places? That makes no sense. I dont blame G Tech. Some kids take 5 visits and commit every place they visit.

February 3, 2009  09:42 AM ET

Yes, yes!!! I need more stories of GT's horrible recruiting!

this is crazy. What's going on in Paul Johnson's office?

I agree!

Good for Ga Tech. If the guy can't be honest he doesn't need to be on the team.

Hey "how bout 'em wants"(whatever the heck that means)-

What exactly is terrible about this? Paul Johnson tells kids not to commit until they're minds are completely made up, and he told this kid his scholarship offer would be rescinded if he visited Auburn. He then did what he said he'd do when the kid made the conscious decision to visit Auburn. To me, its a matter of the QB not staying true to his word and Paul Johnson staying true to his.

Oh yeah, 45-42 still hurts, doesn't it? You guys keep focus on that top recruiting ranking and then underachieve- thats what you do best in Athens.

You people truly hate each other don't you? This is like Auburn/Alabama fans.

The Iron bowl is a much larger rivalry then UGA and GATech. The Iron Bowl wasnt played for years because either schools wouldnt talk with each other to settle on a location to play. The south's oldest rivalry may be Auburn- Georgia but ask anyone who goes to Auburn and they will tell you it is the Iron Bowl.

I have no problem with this story. GT made a decision about how they want to run their program. GOOD! They offered this kid 3 weeks prior to AU deciding that they wanted to invite this kid in for a visit. While I will never wish anything bad on this kid, I do think that he deserves whatever happens to him. Apparently, his coaches thought he should honor his "secret" commitment to GT. (And, what the heck is a "secret" commitment?) GT and Paul Johnson want kids who want to be Jackets. This is really ez to figure out.

Tech talks about its academics, but memories must only extend a few months.

Please recall that UGA has won 7 of the last 8. You know, I will take a 3 point loss every 8th game to keep that record going.

At least UGA's AD does not sign coaches to silly contracts!

As for the recruit, I have mixed thoughts. If you are going to threaten to take away the offer, then you have to follow through on it. However, these are still kids. To me it shows a lack of confidence in a program if the HC thinks he needs to sequester the kid.

How many kids commit to a school and still go on visits and stick with the original commit (barring coaching changes in the interim)?

Good point. I think GA fans dominate the state of GA. There aren't that many GT fans from what I have seen compared to GA fans.

Yeah, let's ignore the fact that we have a new coach and a new offense that ripped you apart even with players that weren't recruited to play that offense. You'll be running back to Athens with your tail (and not much else) between your legs next year, too.

Man, I can't believe that was the first time I've gotten a comment removed.
