Too much talent hurting USC's recruiting?

The stockpiling of talent will apparently continue at USC. As the final pushes are made toward Wednesday, the national letter-of-intent signing day for football, the Trojans are anticipating another stellar recruiting class. But a lot can happen in these final hours, and supposed "commitments" can suddenly become meaningless. Especially at a time when Coach Pete Carroll and his reconfigured staff face a new issue: An exodus of several high-profile transfers. Greg Biggins, West Coast recruiting analyst for ESPNRise.com, said opposing coaches have cited the departures as cautionary tales about straying across the country to sign with the Trojans. And Biggins added that the exits also sent a message regarding USC's depth-chart issues. "They're still going to have a monster class, but this year, probably more than any other year, I've heard kids say, 'You know, there's just too many guys there,' " Biggins said.

I guess that is a good problem to have.

February 3, 2009  08:17 AM ET

There are about 117 other schools wishing they had this same "problem".

February 3, 2009  08:22 AM ET

Gee, these really are tuff times. Can't imagine USC having problems.

February 3, 2009  08:30 AM ET

I'm suprised that it's taken so long to catch up to them. It has ben happening for sometime now. The proof is in how many "mid-major" teams are getting better. Kids don't want to go somewhere and wait to get on the field. There are so many studs out there in high school, more and more each year, but only 120 DI choices to choose from.

February 3, 2009  08:36 AM ET

Is the guy really that good if he cant handle the compitition? So someone does not go.. good we dont want someone that cant hack it. no great lost the way i see it.

February 3, 2009  08:42 AM ET

This isn't anything new at SC, especially under Pete Carroll. He gets into players' head very early and use this to raise the level of competition and to get the most out of the growth potential of young players.

Now its news if USC loses a recruit???
It must really be a bummer to be 2 and 3 deep at ever position already.

February 3, 2009  08:47 AM ET

Great headline! What's next ... "Too Much Heat Hurting The Sun?"

February 3, 2009  08:53 AM ET

Guess that's what happens when you play without a salary cap.

February 3, 2009  08:55 AM ET

Can't Pete send his overflow to Weis.....wait...they want student-arhletes...now what Millie??

February 3, 2009  08:56 AM ET

Oh, please! Yesterday we worshiped Florida. Today we worship USC. Who will it be tomorrow?

February 3, 2009  08:58 AM ET

Can't Pete send his overflow to ND.....wait....they want students first....now what Millie??

This is a problem that is starting to show for USC. I believe people do not look at that way, but it is. Sure you have great depth, but now you are not getting ALL of the big time recruits, you are getting some. The kids see that they may have to sit 2-3 years before playing and are like okay, maybe I will choose school number 2 instead of number 1.

And if you think it is not a problem USC, I guess you did not see Pete blow up when Mark Sanchez left early. Why? He knows that he has a huge hole behind Sanchez with a QB who transferred in, but is not really proven. A 3rd year sophmore with no experience and a freshman who you want to redshirt and not throw to the wolves.

Having too much depth is also causing problems with USC's offense. It goes unnoticed because there defense was so good. You can't have 3 or 4 running backs trying to play and develope a good offense. Now that does not sound right the way destroyed teams last year, but come on, the Pac-10 is not that good after USC. Yeah, a couple of suprises, but really do they match up well the top of other conferences. I don't think so.

So yes, having so many guys and competition at every position will hurt USC. Its just a matter of Pete Carroll not letting it show.

I agree with this.

February 3, 2009  09:14 AM ET

Tooo many damn running backs. Recruit another position please.

February 3, 2009  09:15 AM ET

Like Pete says: playing at SC prepares you for football after college. It is the best program that is based on day-to-day competitiveness, explosive, high-energy practices and that also utilizes a pro-style offense. Pure and simple; you want the reps you earn it; many blue chips feel they have earned it and should start based on their prep careers. those that really want to prove their mettle come to SC... FIGHT ON!!

Everybody has to break in a new QB sometimes.. I'd rather be breaking in 2 national Players of the Year (Mustain and Barkley) and another 4* recruit (Corp) than some of these ham-n-eggers who are playing QB at other schools. Corp and Mustain have each been in the program for at least 2 years so that's how it goes. One guy leaves, the next guy steps up. Same thing happened with Matt Leinart. He turned out fine.
You keep telling yourself whatever makes you feel better. On a neutral field in January, I'll take the Trojans against anybody.

February 3, 2009  09:16 AM ET

And the rb's will get their minutes this year... watch out for bradford

My guess is LSU, Florida and OU are pretty happy with how they are doing as well.
