A spokesman for Condoleezza Rice said today that while the former Secretary of State was approached about being the new commissioner of the Pac-10 Conference, that she won't to pursue the job further and will instead head to Stanford to teach. "She was approached and she was flattered, but she declined this opportunity to pursue her teaching at Stanford and her pursuit of educational initiatives and the books that she has chosen to write,'' said Colby Cooper, a spokesman for Rice. "But she will remain a fan and a strong advocate of Pac-10 athletics.'' Two sources had told the Times last week that Rice was on the list of candidates to become the new Pac-10 Commissioner and replace Tom Hansen, who is retiring on July 1 after hold that job for 26 years.

Aren't you from the state that voted for a wrestler as Governor and a comedian as Senator? Pot calling kettle.

At any rate, I am hoping for all Pac 10 fans that the new commissioner is in favor of a playoff.

She is an extremely intelligent woman. Anyone that graduates college at 16 is up there in my book. Her role as a teacher is vital though has her breath of knowledge can be passed on to others. How many people can say they took a class with the former Secretary of State?

Great post, Hitman. I completely agree.

Hmmmm, Pac 10 commish is leaving in the summer. Can anyone else hear the calls of a playoff on the distance? All that's left is for the Big 10 commish to leave or change his mind. She'd probably oppose a playoff just to spite Obama.

Yep she is...and I think she also views her role as being more affective by teaching

If George Bush told her to take the job she'd take it.

Or if she failed to pay taxes she could work for Obama.

Condi is cool in my book. Sorry to hear she didn't take the gig.

Issac Newton Syndrome! The commissioner of the Pac-10 Conference (or any Conference) is a job that is far below the dignity and acumen of a former US Secretary of State. Her position at Stanford is a much more traditional and suitable alternative.

February 3, 2009  04:03 PM ET

Good thing she isn't taking the job...the Pac-10 would fail like the Bush administration.

February 3, 2009  04:08 PM ET

She would be silly to take the PAC-1o job when she'll have an opportunity to run for Prez in '12.

Because they are thriving now, right?

Running for Prez and winning the Prez are 2 different things I can run for Prez in 2012.

Im going off topic for a minute.

Rumor has it that Robert Marve will be going to UF (paying his own way for the first year).

He sure seems to be trouble. I would be anxious to see if he can hack it there.

Good point. I don't see her running. She isn't a politician, she is an academic. Big difference.

I rarely "openly" disagree with my fellow Trojan fans...but USC TROJAN FAN...you're an idiot! Even though the liberal media likes to portray Black Republicans as lackeys and ****...Condi Rice is a brillant woman. She is a hell of a lot smarter than any of the politicians she served (and for that matter the ones in office before she got there and the ones in office now).

Here's the facts...she wants the NFL Commish's job and she will wait for it. Why play in the minor leagues when you have the talent for the big leagues!

...and please dont renew the agreement to play the Big 10 at the Rose Bowl....
