Why Ferentz won't leave Iowa

07:52 AM ET 02.05 | For the better part of a month, Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz's name has been attached to rumors regarding the Kansas City Chiefs' head-coaching position. Once Scott Pioli, Ferentz's long-time friend, landed the KC general manager job, the rumors ratcheted up a notch or eight. At a press conference introducing the Hawkeyes' 2009 recruiting class, Ferentz once again took the opportunity to deny any interest in the Chiefs position. Speaking to Ivan Maisel of ESPN.com, Ferentz said he's "not an entrant in the race" to replace Herm Edwards in Kansas City. Part of the reason for the lack of interest, Ferentz said, was the fact that his son, James, is a redshirt freshman at Iowa. "[That's a] big factor," Ferentz told Maisel. Ferentz had long been rumored to be Pioli's top choice for a head coach once he left the NFL's Patriots. While that may indeed be the case, it's apparently a one-way street as far as Ferentz is concerned. At least at this point in time.

Will someone please explain to me what all the fuss is about this guy? Every year this guy is in the discussion for another gig.

There's now 2 comments on this and that'll be close to the limit. Why is this even news?

February 5, 2009  09:49 AM ET

He won't leave because he could not handle a high pressure college program or the more immense pressure of a NFL job. He's a story because he USED-TO-BE somebody. And then everyone including himself found out he wasn't.

He may not be a great recruiter but he sure coaches'em up once they get there.

Joe Kidd - this is news because his Agent Neil Cornrich WANTS people to think his client is hyped up (Ferentz is THE MOST Overpaid, Under-performing Coach in College Football History - even IF he does help raise salaries for head football coaches!)... plus Ferentz has connections in the NFL and they want to remind everyone about that!

Think about it - Ferentz has made around $9-$10 MILLION Dollars since 2006 season (inclusive) - and his record during those three seasons is......

[drum roll, please]

a whooping 21-17 !!!!

That is about 55.3 %..... and at Iowa - Ferentz is 70-53 overall (overall 82-74 as a head coach at Iowa and Connecticut)

That is 56.9% as Iowa's head coach - and NO NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS! [ 52.6% overall ]

Are people in I.O.W.A. really "Idiots Out Walking Around" ?

Neil Cornrich is showing someone the money! And let's not forget Bob Bowlsby - the old Iowa AD for being responsible for hiring Ferentz as head coach (yes, Ferentz may be a good guy and all - even a good assistant coach.... as far as head coaches go - he is average as best (AND over paid to boot!)

February 5, 2009  05:54 PM ET

Actually, he's a pretty good coach. Iowa lost a few games this year but they were all close calls.

February 5, 2009  05:54 PM ET

He's doing it with sub-par recruiting classes according to the 'experts'.

February 5, 2009  06:56 PM ET

AT BEST, the Big 10 is the third best conference in the nation - and I'm being generous. I only point this out because, as far as I know, Iowa hasn't even won their conference during Ferentz's tenure. If he can't even win the Big 10, why the hell would anyone think he could hack it in the NFL?!

February 5, 2009  09:11 PM ET

won big ten in 2002 and 2004. open your eyes. beat lsu, fla. texas tech and so. carolina in bowls. seven bowls in eight years. he's not going anywhere even though he could.

What I think is hilarious is that this "non-story" is sure getting your attention. If Ferentz does not warrant this kind of attention, then what does it say about those that sit around and comment on it? As far as Idiots Out Walking Around...that is so lame and tired (especially coming from Texas). For those who are Hawkeye fans and there are quite a few of us, this story does matter. If this story doesn't matter to you, maybe you should ask yourself why you took the time to read it. Nothing better to do??? SAD.

I stand corrected. I admit that I do not follow the Big 10 that closely (obviously).

JUST GO TO KC

February 6, 2009  06:49 AM ET

Just cause you're kid plays there? Sounds like daddy just wants to ensure some PT for his son. Should've taken the job, Ferentz, I think Iowa is on the verge of pulling the rug out from under you unless you start producing some 9- or 10-win seasons.

February 6, 2009  06:49 AM ET

oops > your kid

February 6, 2009  10:11 AM ET

james, like his older brother brian, will earn his playing time. the rug is firmly in place--top 25 finish, bowl victory and strong returning team.

openyoureyes, Kirk Ferentz won 59 games in the last 6 seasons, which is exactly the same amount as your beloved Bobby Bowden

February 6, 2009  12:32 PM ET
