Gruden: Tebow can revolutionize NFL

"Tim Tebow is the kind of guy who could revolutionize the game," Jon Gruden said. "He's the 'wildcat' who can throw. Most of the teams that have the wildcat back there, it's Ronnie Brown, it's Jerious Norwood, it's whoever you want to say it is. This guy here is 250 pounds of concrete cyanide, man. And he can throw. He throws well enough at any level to play quarterback. He can play quarterback in the NFL. When he was a high school senior, they played Armwood in the state championship game. I have tape. He has an 80-yard touchdown run that put them in the lead. When it flipped around, and Armwood had the ball, what position do you think Tebow was playing? He was playing nose guard -- and he disrupted about 10 plays. This guy is totally different. He's got Rich Gannon, Drew Brees, that kind of makeup as a team guy."

I dunno... the Wildcat was new.. but when you get down to it, it's just a flip of the same script. Running back, handing off to a quarterback. When you see just a running back, surely defenders were thinking "run play, run play, run play" so to see one hand it off or throw it himself.. just made it work. Now they can retrain their thinking... in the same way that a quarterback taking a snap doesn't run thru their minds as "pass play, pass play, pass play"... they're looking at it as anything. In the end, a reverse is a reverse, a pass is a pass, a flea-flicker is a flea-flicker, and a quarterback lining up as a wide receiver needs to be treated as a wide receiver with a better arm.... by the time Tim Tebow is relevant on the NFL level, the wildcat won't be.

Yes, because Gruden is an excellent Quarterback evaluator. Hince all the success he had with the posistion in Tampa Bay.

February 8, 2009  09:19 AM ET

and he can walk on water

February 8, 2009  09:24 AM ET

So if Jon gets a new job, Tebow will have somewhere to go. Somehow Tebow and Chucky just don't seem like a couple to me

February 8, 2009  09:24 AM ET

Don't worry, Tim ... you've got a whole year before Chucky gets another job and is able to add you to the 17 QBs he'll have on the roster.

February 8, 2009  09:46 AM ET

He won't do squat in the NFL....no I'm serious.

February 8, 2009  09:47 AM ET

Can he melt ice with his eyes, blow opponents away with his breath, fly in the sky AND run 100mph? Until then, he's just half the player Terrell Owens is... LOL.

February 8, 2009  10:02 AM ET

i hope tim tebow goes to the panthers screw delhomo

February 8, 2009  10:07 AM ET

Tebow? I smell another Alex Smith but it depends on the system,
Smith was wrong to be in west coast system with 49ers.
Tebow looks are much like Smith and he isn't yet hurt,
Time will tell, couple of years from now anyways.

1. If Tim Tebow is so great... why didn't he enter the NFL Draft?

2. You compared him to Rich Gannon? Who wants Rich Gannon?

3. The Wildcat offense is a fad. By the time Tebow gets to the NFL, no team will be running the Wildcat.

February 8, 2009  10:22 AM ET

If Gruden can get Tebow early in his career, I am certain Gruden can screw up Tebow's confidence as a young QB in less than 2 seasons.

February 8, 2009  10:25 AM ET

"This guy here is 250 pounds of concrete cyanide, man."

Gruden should be a professional wrestling promoter. This is the kind of hot air and hyperbole we got used to here in the Bay Area from this overpaid windbag. If I were Tebow, I'd consider this endosement the kiss of death.

February 8, 2009  10:34 AM ET

He'll have every player in the NFL in some Crocs be week three

Watch what the Miami Hurricanes did to Tebow last year and that is what every NFL team will do.
