Suns eyeing Bulls' pair

According to league sources, the Bulls are one of several teams engaged in discussions about Amare Stoudemire. Any Bulls package would include the expiring $7.1 million contract of Drew Gooden. Two league sources said the Suns also are most intrigued by forward Tyrus Thomas, and his play on the recent trip explains why. Thomas averaged 14.7 points, 9.7 rebounds and 1.85 blocks with five double-doubles and missed a sixth by one rebound. He even served as one of the Bulls' primary offensive options down the stretch in Dallas, getting more touches than Luol Deng.

Not a bad deal either. Thomas might be getting his game on already. He is beginning to hit his outside shot on a consistent basis. He is getting better on the pick and roll and he always have the athletic ability to play help out defense and get second chance points. The Suns might need to trade Amare to get something for his value or else you lose him to free agency and not get him for nothing.

"The Suns might need to trade Amare to get something for his value or else you lose him to free agency and not get him for nothing. "

- but even if Thomas has played a bit better recently....he is nowhere near the caliber of player Amare is.
And if you put Thomas on the suns - ALL his stats go DOWN with shaq there.

No way I'd give up Amare for that bull package....not nearly enough in return

The package deal for Amare Stoudemire from the Bulls would most likely include Tyrus Thomas, Joakim Noah, Drew Gooden and a 1st round draft pick. Chicago will get the inside scorer they have needed since trading Elton Brand years ago. Phoenix would get 2 young talented big men with alot of potential, a skilled veteran who can contribute and a draft pick.

February 9, 2009  09:21 AM ET

Dallas' front line could make All-Stars out of a lot of players. Thomas looked good against Dampier. What else is new?

The Suns are not going to get equal value for Stoudemire. All the more reason to work out their differences. The available players now, and in the foreseeable future are not suitable to rebuild the Suns via free agency and the draft. Kerr must have a pretty short memory. 11 years ago, the Bulls decided to decimate their team and rebuild...they're still rebuilding with no end in sight.

I don't think the Bulls would be trading both Thomas and Noah. They're going to need someone down low who at least tries to play some D. Amare isn't exactly known for that.

February 9, 2009  09:44 AM ET

I am hoping Thomas is not included in any deal, but if he's the difference in the deal for Amare, that's fine. I'd sure miss him, though, he's a beast in so many ways. I get pissed when he get's subbed out.

February 9, 2009  09:44 AM ET

The Bulls are, by far, offering the weakest trade packages in the rumor mill. They have some of the least attactive expiring deals, and the worst of the young talent. A lot of Bulls fans seem confident they'll land Amare, but I hope they're just delusional and Kerr's not that stupid. As a Suns fan, if the organization is resigned to trading Amare, I pray and hope that Miami is willing to deal Marion/Beasley. While it'll make Kerr look like a dummy for trading the wrong part of the Stoudemire/Marion problem, I hope he'll swallow his pride and get the best value for Amare he can.

"While it'll make Kerr look like a dummy for trading the wrong part of the Stoudemire/Marion problem, I hope he'll swallow his pride and get the best value for Amare he can"

why was it a 'wrong part' ?

How do you trade (at the time) a 24 year old PHENOM rather than a 30 year old on the downside of a very nice career ?

I think people forget that Amare is a beast. he is averaging 20-8 and this is a 'down year'
Marion hasn't averaged 20 points since 1995

February 9, 2009  10:35 AM ET

I just mean the entire point of the Mario trade was to defuse locker room problems, so since we traded Mario and there's STILL rumblings of locker room problems, then Kerr trading Stoudemire to get Marion back might be seen as an admission of "Oops, might have actually been Stoudemire that was the problem." Don't know if that's true or not, but that could be the perception.

February 9, 2009  10:35 AM ET

I think they will go for something like this. Amare to the Bulls gives them an inside game, and if they have expiring contracts then in 2010 they can sign a free agent wing player, like a shooting guard or small forward to go along with Rose and Amare, say someone like Joe Johnson, or even Wade cause afterall he is from Chicago and the Bulls will have a nice team if they make this trade so it could be promising.

Rose, Amare, Gordon, Deng, Hinrich, Wade.. if they kept all them players somehow then that Chicago team would be very talented.

CHRIS BROWN BEATING UP ON RIHANNA LAST NIGHT.. WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT TO HER?!

February 9, 2009  10:40 AM ET

This trade just doesn't make any sense for the Suns. PERIOD

February 9, 2009  10:40 AM ET

Also, every needs to understand that Marion being part of the deal has NOTHING to do with re-obtaining Marion as a player, but rather obtaining his huge expiring contract. Just so happens that he could be a nice player for the remainder of the season. I'm hoping that the only deals the Suns look at are for Bosh, Alidrige/LaFrentz, Marion/Beasley, and Stuckey/Wallace. Only reason to trade with the Bulls is if we're getting Rose back and I think everyone knows that isn't going to happen.

February 9, 2009  10:49 AM ET

This would be a decent deal for the Suns, given how Amare has plateaued. Tyrus Thomas is the kind of player who will blossom under the tutelage of such a leader and distributor as Steve Nash. As for Amare, he wil play second fiddle to Derrick ROse.

February 9, 2009  10:49 AM ET

Getting Nocioni will be a plus as well. And Mike D'Antoni.

February 9, 2009  10:54 AM ET

The Suns aren't going to get equal value for Amare but the Bulls do have some good young players. I would have to think the Bulls and Blazers have to be the odds on favorites because both teams have young players and that one disposable contract to get an Amare Stoudamire deal done.

February 9, 2009  11:00 AM ET

The package for Stoudemire from the Bulls would more likely include Sefolosha than Noah. I understand that the Bulls should probably do whatever they can to get Amare, but they still have to construct a roster that can compete on the floor. If they traded Gooden, Thomas, and Noah, they'd be left no size of conequence to go with Amare. They are a small team as it. They've needed to deal a guard all season, so I would think they wouldn't trade away their most valuable chips (Gooden's contract, Thomas) without doing something to relieve their logjam at guard.

Everyone should keep in mind that any team that deals for Amare is only guaranteed to have him for a season and a half and will most likely be taking on a significant salary obligation for at least 2009-2010. Deals in any sport are exchanging of talent AND contractual obligations. Both sides of the equation need to be considered in these deals. That's why I don't think the deal with the Heat happens. Why trade Beasley for Amare when the Heat could keep Beasley and shop in 2010. What happens to the Heat if Amare suffers a major injury in the middle of next year? Not only will Amare pick up his option for 2010/2011, but Wade might see the writing on the wall and skip town. The safer play is to keep Beasley for the Heat.

Deals for superstars never bring back equal value in terms of talent on the court. History has proved this out time and time again. Keep that in mind when considering how much the Suns should be willing to take back for Amare.

February 9, 2009  11:29 AM ET

The bulls have had a history over the last 4 seasons to have headcase guys.
Ben Wallace, Tyrus, Noah and Ben Gordon is always yapping blabber.
Amare is another headcase he is perfect for the baby bulls!

February 9, 2009  11:42 AM ET

no doubt this makes sense for both sides bulls get the inside help they needed for so long and in return suns get 9million under the cap and a expiring deal in Gooden and young big men (Tyrus Thomas or Joekim Noah). bull would look better than most ppl think trust me.

Here's a Question for u all: How many more wins can the Bulls produce with a stud like Amare?

February 9, 2009  11:56 AM ET

This is put-up or shut-up time for John Paxson! If Phoenix wants Gooden and Thomas for Amare then then Bulls should make that deal. The Bulls should have learned by now, how to strike while the iron is hot when it comes to making trades. They couldn't pull the trigger when Memphis wanted Deng for Gasol. That's the best trade for Phoenix unless they could get Miami to give up Beasley. I like what Thomas has been doing for the Bulls lately, however if you can get a premier PF in the league for a guy whom everyone thought not too long ago was a bust as #2 pick in Thomas. EVERYONE is tradeable on this current Bulls roster with the exception of Derrick Rose and if you can add Amare in the frontcourt they will be one of the best 1-2 combinations in the league!
