Who will quarterback Vols?

Laughable. Inexcusable. Comical. The quarterback situation at Tennessee last season can be described many ways. Lane Kiffin's solution? Don't sign one. National signing day passed last week, and while UT landed some quality talent, the Vols' coach -- just two months on the job -- didn't sign a quarterback. The explanation might seem odd, but it makes sense. "The quarterback position, usually, you have to start so early recruiting them to get the type that you want," Kiffin said. "To jump in this late, you had to do one of two things: either you had to keep the kids who didn't fit the system, in my opinion. Or you had to go take guys who were down-the-line guys." Enter Tajh Boyd from Hampton, Va. Boyd, a run-pass threat, committed to UT when Phillip Fulmer was the coach. But when Fulmer was forced out in early November, drama unfolded. Kiffin was hired on Nov. 30. Kiffin is a pro-style, drop-back type of coach. He told Boyd he would honor the commitment but that Boyd did not fit UT's new system. Boyd quickly decommitted and signed with Clemson on Wednesday. As for the down-the-line guys, Kiffin said he didn't consider it, even though UT hasn't signed a quarterback since 2007.

May be a big mistake passing on Boyd

After seeing Boyd's performance in one of those senior games, I'd have to agree. They lost a really good player there.

dropping the ball on boyd was a mistake in all likelyhood, but his presance could have scared of a highly rated qb who fits the system. the vols have talent. crompton looked good as a fill in his freshman year, an bj coleman is not a bad player. the issue is that neither were coached well last year. hopefully lane and the new OC ( who cultivated drew brees talent at purdue) can maximize crompton's. after all, he was a high school all american, and the #2 qb next to mark sanchez when they came out.

Are you obsessed with USC? Did they reject your freshman application or what? This article is about Tennessee and Lane Kiffin, not USC.

He's going to have to rely on Crompton (sp?) or Stevens. One of them better step their game up this season.

Also got to agree with the fellow posters on Boyd. Kiffin screwed up there.

Tennessee will when Urban and Tebow decide to drop 80 on them for being uninformed crybabies trying to start trouble. . .

I'm sure they'll figure it out just in time for UCLA to roll into town and beat them again.

SEC! SEC! SEC!

OOPS!

Nu'Keese Richardson and Marsalis Teague, when they see the scoreboard read 63-14, and here 90,000 fans chanting "How You Like Me Now."

You just have to ignore people that think their team is far superior to what they really are, or it will just cause some grand heated debate of nothing but crap. . . Hence why everyone hates my OSU brethren hahaha.

vicious12886 attaboy, a logical and perfectly suitable explanation "you just have to ignore people that think their team is far superior to what they really are."

Ouch. Well at least you guys have won a National Championship fairly recently. Many teams can't make that claim.

After watching the Vols implodes last season, I will say that they have NO QB's that "fit the system."

Tajh Boyd was the best they had.

I dont get the whole system argument he came up with. Who is to say Boyd couldn't be a pro style QB in college and utilize his running skills for when a play breaks down? From what I've heard about Boyd is his passing skills are actually very good. So, I don't get it.
