Longhorns snag '10 commitments

Some were expecting six commitments. Others were hoping for as many as 10. The expectations for Sunday were extremely high because a year ago the Texas Longhorns made a huge splash by landing seven commitments during their first junior day. While the numbers were down this year, the quality was up. Texas snagged two big defensive tackles over the weekend at the school's first junior day of the year, as Denton Guyer High's Taylor Bible and Alief Taylor's DeAires Cotton were among five prospects to commit to the Longhorns. The two plugs for the middle of the defensive line addressed Texas' biggest need. Texas also received verbal commitments from Galena Park North Shore offensive lineman Trey Hopkins, DeSoto wide receiver Darius Terrell and Garland Naaman Forest receiver John Harris.

GREAT last names for the program.....Bible, same name as Dana X. Bible, coached TX from '37-'46.....Cotton, same as a certain bowl that TX went to 21 times.....

and "cotton" speyer who beat ND in the cotton bowl with his 4th down diving catch

Just curious.... If an athlete makes a verbal in February of his Jr year... Then decides to sign elsewhere on Signing Day... Did the verbal actually happen???

February 9, 2009  11:09 AM ET

what, only 2 verbals? Things are falling apart at TEXAS!

February 9, 2009  11:22 AM ET

Mack lost the title; Pete Carroll is the new Coach February.

February 9, 2009  11:52 AM ET

It becomes ridiculous when a team receives 7 verbals from top juniors within a week after signing day and some fans want more.

February 9, 2009  12:04 PM ET

It is now 9 commits and will be 10-11 by the end of the week.

Thank you, coach Brown, for putting these players on my radar screen. Now I can plan my summer trips.

They used to call him Mr. February because of the class he signs on National Signing Day. But now he's moved ahead one whole year in the process, just so he can keep the same title. He's already got half his 2010 class and it's only February 9, 2009.

They called him that because he never won any championships but 2005 changed that.

February 9, 2009  02:36 PM ET

And its no longer big game Bob, instead the name has been changed to back door Bob because Mack is sticking it to Stoops! Hook Em Horns!!!

February 9, 2009  02:40 PM ET

February 9, 2009  02:54 PM ET

It is now officially 10 commits, at least 7 of which will end up to be 4 stars or higher.

February 9, 2009  03:09 PM ET

I won't argue that but you certainly recruit more than your share of nut cases.
