Rutgers' Hill getting outcoached?
Fred Hill Jr. is a class act who represents Rutgers well, a lifelong Jersey guy with impeccable connections in the basketball community who has proven to be a solid recruiter. And, three years into his tenure in Piscataway, I still have no idea if he can coach a basketball team. This is what stands out from the 65-60 loss to Seton Hall Sunday. The Pirates were not only the better team, they were the better-coached team, and that does not bode well for Rutgers now or in the future. The final possession for the Scarlet Knights in their latest loss is Exhibit A, although there is ample evidence from this game and others. Down three points with 19.8 seconds to play, Rutgers guard Anthony Farmer slowly brought the ball up the court, then passed to another senior, forward JR Inman, who took a contested shot in the paint with just seven seconds left. The shot would not have tied the game. And, much worse, it was a shot that Hill said he wanted. "There were 19 seconds to go," Hill said. "You don't need a 3-point shot."

He seems to be a nice guy and he was a good recruiter for Jay Wright at Villanova but he clearly isn't a good coach.
It happens. Sometimes these guys are better off as recruiters then head coaches.

He seems to have no clue on how to run an offense. He should stick to recruiting and RU needs to get an X and Os coach. Same goes for Stringer on the women's side. Great recruiter but cannot coach offense. Her All-American freshman are degressing and are not being taught how to play offense or to play with confidence. The state of RU basketball is absolutely pathetic and embarrassing in both programs this year.

I don't think it was a bad call, depending on how many timeouts he had. 1 possession game go for the easy basket then foul, pray they miss or if they make 1 you get the ball back ...call time and draw up a play to tie it or go for the win. Like I said, it's not a bad call depending on how many t.o's he had left.

Observations from this season and last - great recruiter (as proven at Nova), but not much of a coach. No in-game adjustments. Can go a whole timeout without speaking to his players. Too much time working the refs, rather than X's and O's. Say what you will about Gonzo, but he motivates his players and gets the most out of what he's got (which isn't much).

Right on the money about both Hill and C. Vivian Stringer: excellent recruiters, but they have no clue about running an offense. Stringer has a bevy of talent that wastes on the bench because she is so damn defense oriented - and it has come back to bite her. Her one time stellar defense is porous and soft, and on offense her players are filled with trepidation and indecision. How can the #2 recruit in America, April Sykes, be relegated to a 2 minutes appearance every game? C. Vivian had gotten a ton of hype, but she is not worthy. It's about time C. Vivian demonstrated that she can win big games. It's somewhat ironic that Stringer will be considered for the Hall of Fame this week when her coaching seems to be regressing. She's a remrakable woman who has endured greatly, but it's time to put the "feel sorry for Vivian signs" away and put her on the hot seat for what is, unequivocally, the worst coaching of her career. She has been sadly overmatched by second tier coaches all year.
