Irish coach talks to 'upset' star

07:52 AM ET 02.11 | Apparently, an airport conversation soothed the savage beast. Notre Dame coach Mike Brey sat star forward Luke Harangody for the final 10-plus minutes in a blowout loss to UCLA on Saturday. Harangody, flush with frustration, said afterward that he was "upset" with Brey for not putting him back in. Brey said Tuesday he explained his thinking to Harangody before the team left Los Angeles. "It wasn't a great day for us; it wasn't a great day for him," Brey said of Harangody's five-point, one-rebound struggle. "He also had his ankle rolled up on -- that probably was a little bit worse than people realized. "He's such a competitor. I talked to him at the airport and explained to him, there's our thinking on that. We needed to live to fight another day." Brey also has zero issue with the fact that Harangody was piqued in the first place. "He's a battler, man," Brey said. "I love him. He's competitive as heck."

Oh, Poor Luke! Kid is overrated and so was Notre Dame. Wont even make the Tournament. Are we sure that Charlie Weis isnt secretly coaching this team. Would be a good reason for their disappointing season.

are we talking football here?

February 11, 2009  11:18 AM ET

As competitive as 'heck'....how competitive is 'heck"?

February 11, 2009  12:21 PM ET

Well to answer the question...

On a scale of competitive-related words, heck is near the bottom considering they lost SEVEN games in a row. It's right above 'competitive as poppycock' I believe..

Jayhawk fan you are obviously one of those notre dame haters that has no basis for any of your point of views. You play in the crappy Big 12 conference. You have one legit team. Probably be about a middle of the pack team in the Big East. Speaking of Oklahoma. Definitely not number two ranked team in country. Kansas would be an after thought in the Big East this year. And if you think otherwise, you are blinded by stupidity. You wanna talk about Charlie Weis? I dont really even think that we need to compare football programs because that would just be even more embarrassing for you. You have had one relevant year in your entire football existence and that dates back to 1890. One year!!! And in that year, 2 seasons ago you played about 2 good teams. Lost to one and happened to beat Virginia Tech. You are a joke!!

February 11, 2009  12:44 PM ET

Hey Rants726, are you that dumb? Kansas is one of the top 5 basketball programs of all time. We are coming off our 5th national title last year little fella.

Yes, you dont want to talk about football. Cause the last two years KU has won 20 games...two bowl games....1 BCS bowl game and had 4 All Americans.

Notre has won what, 10 games, and won the Hawaii Bowl? HAHAHA.

You are the joke. You are making zero sense. Notre Dame has zero history in basketball. KU lost 6 of its top 7 scorers and is still 19-5. Notre Dame brought back everyone and is 3-8 in conferene. HAHAAHHA.

I watched him at his high school and he was always wining to the refs about calls and still does in college. I think he just wanted to get to double digits in points and not the win.
He needs to grow up but that may be impossible. He is baby in a big body.

I agree with your comment. He is a competitive guy, but he can't bang with the best of 'em nor is his abilities up to par...he will get exposed in the NCAA toury for what he is...a frugazi( from the movie Donnie Brasco)..a fake..

February 11, 2009  01:17 PM ET

Yeah, I am a tool cause I state facts.

ND Fans. So funny.

February 11, 2009  01:55 PM ET

The fact of the matter is that you play in the Big 12. Does anyone other than you believe that you are better than middle of the pack in the Big East. There are 16 teams in the Big East. UConn, Louisville, Pitt, Marquette, Nova, Cuse and Georgetown all beat you. I say that with no doubts in my mind. Every one of those teams beat you hands down, home or away. You might be having a decent year yes but in the Big 12. that is like saying you are having a good year in football in the PAC-10. And yes Notre Dame football is down right now, but on one hand you compare Notre Dame of today and your KU basketball of the past. Yes, you won last year nice job. The last one was a decade before that. You say KU football even compares? And you want me to get my facts straight. Here are some facts for you: 11 national titles, 7 heisman winners, 178 all-americans. Go ahead again and tell me about your 20 wins and 4 all-americans again and try to not sound like an idiot.

February 11, 2009  01:59 PM ET

Notre Dame just can't recruit well enough to hang with the top teams in the Big East. The B.E. and ACC may not be great football conferences but they have REALLY separated themselves from the BigTen, Big12, SEC and Pac-10 in basketball and ND isn't going to be able to get past the middle of the pack syndrome in the Big East.

Notre Dame should just move the the Big 10 where they'd have a better chance of competing in basketball.

February 11, 2009  02:06 PM ET

Central Michigan, SE Louisiana, Toledo, Florida International, Kansas State, Baylor, Colorado, Texas A&M, Nebraska, OSU and Missouri. Your claim to fame. Your 2007 seaon schedule. This looks like 1-AA schedule.

And as long as are fact stating I can find no mention anywhere of your mythical 5 championships. Everything I have found says 1952, 1988 and 2008. Going back to 1939, straight off the NCAA official web site you have 3, little fella. You trying to compare KU to Notre Dame is like comparing a filet mignon to dog food.

February 11, 2009  03:40 PM ET

One more thing. Why dont you tell me how good your 19-5 record is when the best team you have beat is Tennessee. A team from the SEC which doesnt have one single team in the top 25. Next you are gonna try to tell how victories against Siena, Albany, Coppin State and UMKC are solid victories. When I looked at your schedule, I couldnt even believe that you would tout a 19-5 record. Seriously!!! Seriously!!! You lost to Umass. You havent even sniffed a victory against even a decent team. I am still in shock you would tout a 19-5 record with that schedule. That fact that you brought that up is a joke. Just like you.

February 11, 2009  04:43 PM ET

oh man dometron just totally nailed you jayhawk fan. that's hilarious. ND is playing absolutely terribly, but I don't think you can knock the guy who leads the Big East in scoring and led them in rebounds until Blair took over by .1 rebound/game just this week. Big East has the most brutal schedules for its teams, and ND clearly can't match up for whatever reason, despite the fact that nothing really changed for them from last year, but saying Harangody can't bang with the best of them is stupid, most of the good ones are in the Big East. He dominated Thabeet one on one, played well against Blair, the list goes on.

No one outdside of Kansas fans count 1922 and 1923 as national titles, including the NCAA, so Kansas has three titles.
