Is Williams Maryland's problem?

The national championship capped the remarkable revival of a Maryland program decimated by scandal in the mid- to late 1980s, and Gary Williams had done it his way: with players who hadn't been highly coveted coming out of high school and without resorting to the schemes that were becoming increasingly prevalent in recruiting. Seven years later, the view through Williams's eyes isn't nearly as appealing. The adoring fans have been replaced by angry skeptics. The Terrapins have reached the round of 16 only once since winning the title and are in danger of missing the NCAA tournament altogether for the fourth time in five seasons. A review of NCAA tournament records shows that no national champion in the past 18 seasons has regressed so quickly. How did this happen? Interviews with more than 50 coaches, players and others knowledgeable about the program reveal many explanations, and Williams, 63, is central to each of them. Some say his disdain for under-the-table recruiting tactics has left him out of touch with the influential summer league circuit; others say he has grown complacent, delegating most recruiting duties to an ever-changing group of assistants. Clearly, Maryland has been hurt by landing highly touted recruits whose potential was never fulfilled and by failing to identify less-heralded future stars, many of whom attended high schools within short drives of College Park. Williams argues that his 412-223 record at the school, including 11 consecutive NCAA tournament appearances from 1994 to 2004, proves his coaching acumen. He says he is as involved in recruiting as any coach in the nation and that the occasional recruiting misstep is to be expected in such an ephemeral task. "Well, you miss kids," he said. "This is not a perfect science."

The old saying, "what have you done for me lately?" comes to mind. I saw them in person this year and was amazed at the lack of talent they had. Maryland has always been a good source for basketball talent. Couple that with playing in the best basketball conference in the nation and I would think they would be much better than this.

Seems they may need a change at the top.

I bet the article will not bring up that MD is in Lance Stephenson's top 3! If it does, it will probably find some negative spin on things.

Gary can't land top talent in his own backyard, and that's a big problem. Maryland is a goldmine for basketball talent. Beasley, Durant, and Carmelo come from that area. The miss on Beasley is understandable but he should of been able to get Melo or Durant. The only reason Lance is even considering Maryland is cause his teamate from Lincoln, James Padgett is going there in the fall of 09. I just hope one of my all - time favorite programs lands Lance Stephenson, for the sake of the program and for the sake of G.W.'s era @ UMD.

Yow does not recruit and Yow does not yell non-stop at the players on the bench. If a CEO of a company (say GE) had a great year followed by 8 continually worse years, he would be gone. Great organizations are judged on what they have done lately. Maryland is no longer a great organization and the guy at the top is running out of rope.

Don't think Mr. Williams is the problem. I don't care for him or UMD, but it seems that the issues are higher up than at the coaching levels. Maybe the Administration, the AD, other area. It's not like we're speaking of Harvard or Stanford here - so we know it isn't the stringent academic requirements. Give the guy something to work with...hopefully Stephenson will come aboard.

Under Gary Williams and Ralph Friedgen, Maryland just isn't a big-time sports school anymore. The last few years, they have been middle of the pack in the ACC in both football and basketball, with the occassional year when they overachieve to be competitive. Would changing the coaches help?

Perhaps, but I don't think you can talk about firing a coach unless you have a few ideas about a replacement. With regards to Friedgen, I think that Maryland would have a great chance to hire Turner Gill away from Buffalo. That would make an incredible impact on the football program. But who would Maryland hire to replace Gary Williams? Are there any up-and-coming coaches out there who might take the Maryland job? I just can't think of anyone who Maryland could get.

As a life time Md. BBAll fan I stand by GW. He is in the top 10 of all major barameters of success during the last 10 years: Wins, winning percentage, winning percentage within conference, ncaaa tournament bids, sweet 16s, titles, etc....I remember the Bob Wade days and will always be thankful for what GW has done. I am glad he does not pander to AAU or cash promises for recruits. There are a dozen teams with decent programs that would hire him tomorrow if given the chance. David Pleat

As a MD resident I support Williams, but I also think it???s time to hard look at his program. I don???t know if he is the problem, but his recruiting certainly looks to be playing a role. I can???t believe MD isn???t fielding better talent with all the players available in the DC metro area. He???ll continue to field mediocre teams if he doesn???t get more involved personally, and will replaced in the near future.
