Coach Charlie Weis will take over offensive coordinator duties for Notre Dame next season, the biggest in a series of changes in coaching responsibilities announced Friday. Defensive coordinator Corwin Brown will share the title of defensive coordinator with Jon Tenuta while adding the title of associate head coach. Tenuta, the linebackers coach, will call plays on defense. New offensive line coach Frank Verducci, a Cleveland Browns assistant the past two seasons, has added the title of running game coordinator, while receivers coach Rob Ianello will be assistant coach for offense. Weis said many of the changes in roles involved his decision to call plays on offense as he did for his first three seasons before handing the duties last season over to Mike Haywood, now the head coach at Miami of Ohio. Brown will take over some of the other duties Weis previously handled.

Wies can call plays but he obviously can not coach young players and get them ready for big games so if he decides to call plays from the press box this year and leaves the leadership roll down on the field to Corwin, then just maybe the Irish might have a chance to win some games.

This to me is a desperate move, he knows he barely survived being canned this year. All those freshmen and sophomores should be mature juniors and seniors. If they suck this year (which I hope they do) then Notre Dame has no choice but to fire him.

The team really has not been at an elite level since Lou Holtz left in '93....The power center of college football shifted south and recently to USC too. 2009 will be the watershed year....
I'm not really sure ND can get back to that level...If you look at recruiting over a 15 year period you see Fla...LSU...Okla...Texas....Alabam.....USC...always in the top ten recruiting..ND has had
1 or 2 top ten classes....this year they were ranked around no.20 in recruiting....its an uphill battle against the SEC..Big 12 and USC....there are many factors working against ND in the recruiting game.

Being a ND fan I can only say this is a good move to delegate his authority and allow these coaches to not only do their jobs, but develop these players. Hopefully Charlie has learned what his strengths and weaknesses are, something that has hurt him in the past.

Hard to take this post seriously; Holtz did not leave in '93.

About this coaching scheme - If it is confusing to the fans, imagine how it must be to the players.

Hard to take any post seriously that talks about Notre Dame and the 1993 season - that topic has been worn thin by the Fungus and all of his incarnations...

First, I love how the main story for college football has the wrong picture for Jake Locker on the front...thats Ronnie Faust (sp)

If Charlie finds out a way to film ND's opponents practices then maybe, MAYBE he wont get fired next year.

February 14, 2009  04:28 PM ET

This is a great move. It went from Weis calling the plays then to someone else calling the plays and now back to Weis calling the plays. I am sure this will be the move to get ND back to glory.

February 14, 2009  07:24 PM ET

Ok... If I am not mistaken... All these guys are Weis recruits... Been in his system for the past few years... If this team doesn't show some SERIOUS improvement this year.... Can you say.... Chuckie???

February 14, 2009  07:41 PM ET

Weis has this year to get things moving in the right direction (with ND's schedule, that should be at least 9 wins). If not, Weis is gone. How many years must the ND faithful endure?!?

Well, everybody in the Big East, I mean Big Ten - oh, that's right, these cowards aren't in a conference - everybody in the whole world is scared now. Scared they're going to pee their pants from laughter.

I can see it now. Game one they gain 17 yards, throw 3 picks and give up a safety. Ditto game two. Game 3 they score a touchdown and on Monday the AP ranks them at 9. On Tuesday Weis is summoned to the Dean's office. He arrives in his usual fashion (carried on a platter with an apple in his mouth) and is rewarded with a 5 year contract extension. It's great to be Irish.

I'm a ND fan, but d@m that's funny!!

"What we will have here is a failure to communicate" - sincerely Strother Martin.

February 15, 2009  04:20 AM ET

Haven't we seen this movie before? This is his 5th year! If he doesn't get it right this year then he has to go, regardless of contract. None of this going 6-6 and playing the mighty Warriors of Hawaii for a give-me bowl victory. I think it likely that his arrogance will slip in to his play calling and there will be many "picks" in the first 3-4 games.

BTW, Holtz left after the '96 season for "undisclosed reasons," but if you look closely back then you could barely see the knife that Bob Davie placed in his back....kind of like what happened to Gruden at Tampa Bay.

Cowards...? Only a bonehead would see any sense in ND joining a conference and having to split the MILLIONS NBC, ESPN and other networks shower them with every year. Like them or hate them people like you keep tuning them in every week and ND is laughing all the way to the bank! On behalf of the Irish I thank you...!

February 15, 2009  01:35 PM ET

Charlie will now be calling the plays again?

This is not a joke or an insult, I really want to know. I want to hear from some Irish fans how in the world you can be supportive of your AD and your football coach. I will always love FSU and our football program... which is why I'd be foaming-at-the-mouth angry if this was happening at Florida State. It's as though Charlie Weis LOOKS for new ways to screw up this once-proud program. It's difficult for me to say this, but I think the ND faithful deserve better.

February 15, 2009  02:26 PM ET

Notre Dame's new offensive coordinator is...Jabba the Frontal Butt!

We already knew that.

February 15, 2009  04:20 PM ET

Notre Dame sucks! Wa Wa Wa...cry babies...

February 15, 2009  07:50 PM ET

Bring it haters. We won our bowl now you can't talk about that. People say we can't compete against USC, and the SEC in recruiting: so we beat out everyone for Manti T'eo. Not only that we also steal Michael Carter from USC also days later from the T'eo signing ( a 5-Star DE from CA). I know no one wants Notre Dame back to elite status but, signs are pointing up.
