Is Manny his generation's best player?

If Manny Ramirez is not on any lists of players who tested positive for an illegal substance, might he emerge as the greatest player of his generation? Think about it. Barry Bonds, tainted; Alex Rodriguez, tainted; Roger Clemens, tainted. Ramirez? The big blemish on his legacy will be that he quit on the Red Sox, but in an era when steroids and cheating were the major crimes, Ramirez may be in the clear.

MBM still the unsigned wonder.
The story should begin with IF. MBM has always been a question mark to me, and I love the Sox, but all we can do is speculate. If there is a red sox player on the list of 104, MBM being on it would not surprise me one bit.

He may have been one of the greatest hitters, however had Griffey not had all the injuries he would probably be concidered that, we'll never know what kind of numbers he would have been able to put up if he didn't end up losing all those games to being hurt. I think to be known as the greatest player you have to concider defence also which Manny is only average outside of Fenway where he learned to play the wall.

"IF"?????? .... come on SI ... this is a bull **** story ...

I'm not sure where the generational cut-off is, but Albert Pujols is a better hitter and fielder.

February 15, 2009  09:23 AM ET

Sure. I mean starting in 1998 he begins to hit 20 more home runs a year . LOL. I think the list of 104 needs to be released or I would not assume that any MLB slugger is clean.

agree- everyone is guilty- either by doing them or by not ratting
other players out- thereby 'ruining' the integrity of the game

If you count everyone- roid/ no roids....he still isn't the best
all-around player.....best hitter- maybe
but all-around- I'd go Arod...MUCH better fielder
- and I don't consider Bonds & grif in the same 'generation'
as manny & arod-
they overlapped- sure - but different generations

Sad, but true. A Rod is the consensus best player in the game in an era that will always be tainted. Until, and it will not happen, MLB comes clean, then no one is innocent. But a lot of money was made by all.

I really hope not, Manny :(

February 15, 2009  10:18 AM ET

He and Bonds were in the league 15 years together. I'd say Bonds beats him out for both player and ass of the generation. Bonds is also the only one I'm sure was a great player even before the steroids. How easily we forget Bonds was once a gold glove fielder and an offensive force without steroids.

And being a player doesn't involve only hitting and pitching in my mind. And if there are other factors involved, he doesn't rate the best player of his generation award. What about big Papi? What about Matt Stairs and Kenny Lofton??

February 15, 2009  10:27 AM ET

On second thought Clemens may have them both beat for ass of the generation.

Muck Fanny.

I would say that quitting on your team pretty much disqualifies you as a great player, let alone the best of your generation.

Manny didn't quit on the Red Sox. He had a great July. Does anybody actually watch baseball before writing articles?

Manny greatest of his generation? No, I don't think so. Great hitter, terrible fielder, but definitely a valuable asset to any team he's on. There are many people over Manny Ramirez though for best of this generation. First and foremost Ken Griffey Jr. is by far the best player of this generation and the best hitter in the past 35 years. Others that are better without being linked to roids would be: Greg Maddox, Frank Thomas (yes, the Big Hurt), Albert Pujols, Chipper Jones, Vladimir Guerrero, Roy Halladay, Pedro Martinez, Randy Johnson, and then I would put Manny in the mix with 10-20 other players after that. I would say as far as performance, that Manny is about where Jim Thome is; that is a great player, but not a sure fire first ballot HOFer.
