08:24 AM ET 02.15 | Dennis "Oil Can" Boyd has long felt the game of baseball was taken away from him far too soon. He was 31 years old when he threw his last pitch for the Texas Rangers in 1991. But now, at age 49, Boyd believes his shoulder is stronger than ever. He says his velocity is up in the low 90s and the 12-6 curveball and changeup have returned. He wants a chance to show a major league team he can still pitch. "I have nothing to lose, and all a major league team has to lose is 15 minutes," said Boyd. "Give me 15 minutes and I'll show I can still pitch. That's all I want."

I always figured they called him oil can was because he would end up working in a gas station after the way he picthed for Texas. He did try some comebacks in the minors and indy leauges but they never worked out.

Oil Can Boyd ... dang that's a name I haven't heard in what ... almost 20 years ... lol

February 15, 2009  09:29 AM ET

The Red Sox suspended him for " erratic" behavior and he ended up in a psychiatric ward in a hospital. It would seem that he was released too early.
For the record, " oil can" is a name for a can of beer in Miss. where he came from.

I think ol' Oil Can there has seen Dennis Quaid in "The Rookie" one time too many.

February 15, 2009  10:41 AM ET

I think it's time for him to check back into that psychiatric ward.

WHAT!!! Oil Can is trying to come back? Well...good luck with that. Great, this means Julio Franco is going to unretire and make a comeback at 60, I mean 70.

One day this conversation is going to take place related to Oil Can, a GM is going to be talking to the staff, about the list of players they are bringing in and some employee will say:

"This guy here is dead."
"Then cross him off the list."

Didn't know he was amongst the living...

Next thread please.

With some of the guys pitching in the big leagues they ought to give him a chance.

YANKEES WILL OFFER HIM A 5 YEARS 75 MILLION

February 15, 2009  03:06 PM ET

At least his mouth hasn't changed a bit in these 20 years. The only way he's measuring low 90's with his fastball is if he's driving on the Autobahn.

C'mon man, a little more realism, please - 4 years, 20 million.

Fannnation, every day a little bit better...

Oil Can was pitching for my somewhat local Lowell Spinners. I saw him pitch a few years back and he can still bring the heat but give me a break, the guys almost fifty. I could be wrong but i believe it was him who got caught buying drugs right next to the field in Massachusetts.

February 15, 2009  04:48 PM ET

Hey, now wait a minute. If he can throw 90, shoot him up with steroids, give him a work out coach, and he'll be throwing 96 and winning 15-18 games. That was the Clemmons formula after he left Boston.

February 15, 2009  05:22 PM ET

One thing you could always say about Oil Can. He wasn't boring. As for a come back? Maybe if he can connect with Roger or A Rods suppliers he might have a chance.

February 15, 2009  05:35 PM ET

His arm is probably stronger than AJ Burnett's. Don't know about his head, though!

February 15, 2009  05:45 PM ET

Hey maybe they can get John Rocker, Joaquin Andujar and the Mad Hungarian to comeback too. Just tell the Yankers that the Red Sox want him and Steinbrenner Jr. will have his checkbook out in a flash.
