04:47 AM ET 02.16 | In an interview with Sirius NFL Radio's Alex Marvez and Ross Tucker, former Lions WR Mike Furrey said friends with the Lions told him prior to his release that Daunte Culpepper would be their starter in 2009.

I suppose that's one way to look at it. I was thinking if that don't sign someone they could run a radio contest and pick a lucky winner each week from greater Detroit.

hey the eagles lucked out that way.

or was it the jets?

Not sure anyone who would be picked would be termed a "winner" or lucky. Maybe they could call the weekly QB the "patient to be".. Daunte is about as mobile as the Lincoln Memorial.

"WR Mike Furrey said friends with the Lions told him prior to his release that Daunte Culpepper would be their starter in 2009."

So, this would be third hand hearsay?

February 16, 2009  07:13 AM ET

"Prior to his relaease"..... Well, Isn't that a contradiction in terms? Release him, then tell him he would be their starter....

February 16, 2009  07:14 AM ET

pepp should be better next season having a whole yr to get ready. he played pretty decent considering he started a couple of days after he was signed. they'll still probably draft stafford and groom him for two yrs and then give him the starting gig

February 16, 2009  07:23 AM ET

According to Mlive.com this story has already been shot down. Sounds more like Furrey trying to sabotage the Lions trying to build hype over the QB pick and trying to trade down. Even if they want to start Daunte they arent gonna say as they want to try to trade down, as hard as that is, and they need everyone to think they will draft Stafford.

Maybe the only way to get a starter if you go 0-16 is to release them first. You know soften the blow

Go Lions! Wooooo!

Culpepper wasnt released WR Mike Furrey was!!!

February 16, 2009  08:05 AM ET

This is fine by me. All I can hope is that all this Stafford talk is a smoke screen to increase chances of trading out of #1. Build from the trenches out baby. If we take any positions other than the trenches, its got to be D.

Actually, that would be just mean. How about............................................McNabb. Maybe they can work out a trade.

That's actually better than the pure speculation that fuels a lot of the stories posted here.

Well my Uncle's neighbor's babysitter's cousin's barber said it was gonna be Kitna, so I don't believe this story.

The lions would not be that bad off with Culpepper at the hull. They do need an offensive line and a defense. If they could give the qb 3 seconds, they may have a chance to complete a pass on offense.
