Why Wings are likely to trade

07:44 AM ET 02.17 | Red Wings general manager Ken Holland spent the past few days meeting with fellow front-office members and pro scouts in Naples, Fla., analyzing the Wings and the rest of the league, all the while keeping conversations flowing with the agents for Marian Hossa and Johan Franzen. Negotiations with Franzen have progressed steadily. If the Wings keep Franzen and Hossa, there won't be room to re-sign players such as Mikael Samuelsson and Jiri Hudler, both of whom also are in the last year of contracts. That's why it makes sense for the Wings to explore a trade leading up to the March 4 deadline.

OK I know I'm going to take some heat here but I'm going to say....... Keep Hossa...trade Franzen. Franzen had a great run last year in the playoffs...and final portion of regular season and he hasn't been bad this year as well. Hossa just brings it nite after nite though. He works hard ALL the time. To me Hossa is the better player. Trade Franzen and at the end of the year...dump Chelios, McCarty, Osgood, Maltby. Bring up Helm full time, and maybe Downey for spark and grit. One thing...trade Franzen to the East....so he doesn't come back to help anyone in the West. BGM ??....who you give us for him? LOL

well I agree that the Wings should keep Hossa as long as its the sorta of deal zetterberg signed that would average 6 mill a year. Now about the trades for backstrom or baumeester i say no because they want big money. Just sign conklin to a 2 year extension and call up Howard. No sense in tying up alot of money in a goalie. Buffalos Miller could have went with his hometown team but chose to sign longterm with Buffalo. Trade Franzen to the Leafs for their Frist rounder. Toronto needs scoring punch and the wings could use their top 10 pick for a good puck moving dman to get into the system in a few years

Detroit is in quite the enviable position up front... deciding which top notch player sto keep, and which to let go... hopefully they do the smart thing and move one (Franzen) for a young prospect on defence and maybe Hudler for a draft pick for goaltending? Osgood is decent, but not great and Lidstrom is getting on in years... Detroit needs to restock the farm and get ready for a few more years of Stanley Cup runs, and they have the depth to pull it off. Plus, never underestimate Detroits scouting staff, they seem to come up with gems in late rounds.

WingsNinersTigers..... I agree in part...keep conklin as a matter of fact I'd make him the number one goalie right now. The Wings also have some good dmen in the minors right now as well so yeah the trade for Baumeester would just be a rental for the rest of the season anyhow. Problem is they can't keep both Franzen and Hossa...and Hossa is IMO the better choice.

Just a thought. Hossa ditched Pittsburgh and a 7 year deal to go to Detroit to win a cup. It would be funny if Detroit dealt him away before he even had a chance to hit the playoffs.

I concur.
Sadly it won't happen.

MoReese... I don't think they'll deal Hudler...he's been too good for them this year and he continues to improve. Don't get me wrong....Lidstrom is a great Dman....but I've noticed he's lost a step or two this year. Losing a step or two and he's still in the top 3 Dmen in the league but you're right...they need to look to the future.
Hey Genghis?.....if you think they're trading him before the playoffs I want some of whatever you're smoking

not to come off as aggressive and uncivil but have you been watching the Wings this year? Hossa is sweet and he scores at least a point or two a game it seems. I'm liking Hudler more and more and Franzen less and less and im sold on Hossa.

Wha?? Samuelsson and Hudler are role players who happen to play on the best team in the league, which makes them look better then they really are. Trade them to another team and they'll be solid but ordinary. Hossa and Franzen, though, are the real deal and anything but ordinary. I think, somehow, someway, Holland will actually able to pull it off and keep Hossa and Franzen long term. Imagine Datsuyk, Zetterberg, Hossa and Franzen on the top two lines for years to come, and it won't even matter who plays on the 3rd and 4th lines. Hell, Ken could throw some high school kids making minimum wage on those lines and the Wings will still be a force.
It's a great time to be a Wings fan. Too bad I'm not ;-)

Total confidence in all, Ken Holand, the Illitch's and Mike Babcock in doing what is right to get the job done. I believe in whatever they do.

Personally I hope they keep Franzen. He's a homegrown talent, just coming into his own and I like the way he plays. But that's just because he's a personal favorite of mine. In reality I know that if you have a choice, of signing one or the other, you'd want to keep Hossa. He's more proven and has been consistently playing on an elite level.
At the beginning of the season I said keep Franzen, because he's a franchise grown player and it's hard to find big-bodied, skilled players. But that was before I saw Hossa play a lot. I did not realize how big Hossa is, I thought he was a slippery little guy similar to Dats. But he is big, has a scoring touch with a quick shot, and is hard to take off the puck.
Big if, but what if the Wings win the Cup? Is that really what Hossa was looking for, and then he would go hunt a big pay day? Or should we hold him at his word and think he's happy with Detroit? I think Holland's priority is Hossa, but if he's asking too much he'll walk away. He already showed he would do that before Hossa signed this year. Holland said, "Nope, he's wanting too much, we're not interested", but Hossa's agent came back and said he'd do it for less.
With the way Hudler's year is going, I would expect Holland to put the future on Hossa and Hudler, with Franzen being a back burner topic. The Wings are always looking for trades at the end of the year to help them on a playoff run, but I'm not sure they have too much to work with this year. Hell, it won 'em the Cup last year and they didn't have Hossa! Once they get everyone healthy I think Holland will be happy with what they've got. He and Babcock are probably hoping that this is a regular season malaise and that the defensive intensity will be there come playoffs.

Yeah, I have to agree with this. We've seen it in times past where, because of the Wings success, other teams have coveted Wings players and been willing to pay big for them (Lapointe, Ward, Dandenault, McCarty jsut to name a few). But the Wings knew those were some of their role players that they could replace. So maybe they use the value of Sammie and Hudler now (though I still think they will keep Hudler for the different ways they can use him).
I was surprised to see when I read an article yesterday that Filppula is making 3 mil a year. That seems a bit much for them to be paying him, as he has like one point over the last 20 some games. Babcock was talking him up in the article and saying he could have skill like Dats...but maybe he was talking him up for trade value. Hmm...

They won the cup without Hossa, that is my point. Yes I agree that he is a great player but Franzen is going to be ALOT cheaper than Hossa. If they can find a way to get everybody, maybe they can share their secrets with my Pens on keeping players.
