Selig: Don't blame me

06:39 AM ET 02.17 | In a lengthy telephone interview Monday, the commissioner of baseball strongly disputed the widely held perception that he was in any way complicit in the proliferation of steroids in major-league baseball during the past 15 years. "I don't want to hear the commissioner turned a blind eye to this or he didn't care about it,'' Selig said. "That annoys the you-know-what out of me. You bet I'm sensitive to the criticism. The reason I'm so frustrated is, if you look at our whole body of work, I think we've come farther than anyone ever dreamed possible.'' Selig pointed to the reduction in the number of positive steroid tests among major- and minor-league players during the past three years, as well as the institution of amphetamine testing as evidence that baseball's 2005 drug policy is working. He also defended his efforts to stop the use of performance-enhancing drugs as far back as 1999, the year after Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa, two now-suspected steroid cheats, staged a seasonlong home run derby that helped pull baseball out of the tailspin it went into after the work stoppage of 1994.

Sorry Bud, it all happened under your watch. It's really hard for you not to take the blame when you were parading around players that suddenly hit 60-75 home runs a season like it was going out of style. You had players recovering from 9 month injuries in 3-4 months but you turned a blind eye to that as well.

Sure, the players union has a lot of blame here and ultimately the players because they were the ones cheating, but you were in charge, so the buck stops with you. The union did push back against testing but you could have taken other directions.

Also, I blame the GM's of some of the teams as well. They had to know what was going on. C'mon, the Yankees took out the steroids clause from Giambi's contract, so they must have known something was up. Clemens pitching well into his 40's and still pitching at a high level. Also, the players were rewarded for cheating with some of the largest contracts ever. A-Rod got 252 million, Clemens was getting 18-25 million a year for cheating, Giambi got 126 million, so the GM's were rewarding the cheaters, so it got more players to cheat.

You are 100% correct, Bruins in '09. Good ol' "pass the buck" Bud.
How about just "pass the Bud" and let's move on!

February 17, 2009  07:06 AM ET

By the way, why is Bud playing "Office Football" when he should be running MLB? Besides, he's gonna get hit in the face if that field goal is good.

" I think we've come farther than anyone ever dreamed possible.''

Really Bud? I look back and wonder why MLB did not move at the same pace as the rest of American society. Insomuch as drug testing is concerned.

The rest of working America was being tested by employers for a whole list of things while MLB and YOU Bud sat on your asses and reaped the rewards gathered from the abused bodies of the athletes you were supposed to be policing.

Youre a joke Selig a huge joker faced punchline.

If MLB and all the other major sports were "serious" about getting rid of performance enhancing drugs in sports, they would unilaterally implement WADA standards for testing and punishment. http://www.wada-ama.org/en/dynamic.ch2?pageCategory.id=269. Try a two year ban A-roid.

Hilarious. Maybe he is prepping for his future career as commission of the Table Football League once he is forced to resign from MLB. Of course once the TFL players start juicing their index fingers to the size of their thumbs, Old Bud will claim he had no idea what was going on. Of course it will be hard to hear him with his head up his ass...again.

BUD YOU RUINED BASEBALL. You did turn a blind eye. You were somewhat good at covering your own behind. You just never thought it was be this big of an issue. If it weren't partially your fault you would have done the following:

- Give Records back to the previous owner (The one who has not admitted use of Performance Enhancing Drugs or the one who never tested positive)
- You would suspend everyone (currently playing) who has tested positive or admitted use of the PEDs. (Argue that it wasn't against baseballs rules to side with AROID. Fine. But it was still against the law which means that player broke the law which in my opinion gives you every right to suspend that player.)

BUD YOU ARE AN IDIOT. PLEASE RETIRE and take Orza and all your other little scoundrels with you!

TO BUD AND ALL THE PED users...Thanks for ruining my entire lifetime of baseball for me!!! Great role models!!! One thing I learned from it is cheat cheat cheat. There is no wrong in cheating. You idiots!

Your right Bud that should annoy the **** out of you, because you are so innocent. I mean heck you only made what 17 million for that job you did last year. How can a man working so hard to come so far make so little. I'm thinking Selig must be related to Bettman some way.

February 17, 2009  08:28 AM ET
