06:41 AM ET 02.18 | Ken Griffey spent a portion of Tuesday debating about whether to play in Seattle or Atlanta for this upcoming season, and he's expected to make his decision official on Wednesday. Citing a source that is close to the veteran star and familiar with the ongoing negotiations, The Atlanta-Journal Constitution reported on Tuesday that Griffey has chosen the Braves over the Mariners. Both Griffey and his agent, Brian Goldberg, said that story was not accurate. But in the hours that have followed, the basis of that story could indeed be accurate. Braves general manager Frank Wren spoke with Goldberg on Tuesday afternoon. The fact that Seattle is a six-hour flight from the veteran outfielder's home certainly provides an advantage to the Braves. Atlanta is just a one-hour flight from Orlando.

Should be a good pickup for Atlanta if this pans out.

Good, he'll play 75-90 games next year

I would like to know what this story has to do with ARod doing steroids 6 years ago. Get with the program SI.

Good for Griffey and the Braves. It'll keep him closer to his family and he can play in a warmer climate. Glad to hear he's got at least another year in the tank. He is one of what could be the last true Hall of Famers. It's been great watching him the past couple decades.

If he stays healthy this should help the arrogant Braves out but they will still suck this year.

February 18, 2009  08:16 AM ET

If Griffey is so obsessed with being close to Orlando, as we are constantly reminded, why doesn't he just offer his services to the Rays for free?

It pains me to say this, because I grew up in Georgia rooting for the Braves, but this will be an unimportant signing by an unimporant team.

ha...very funny!

how many game did that dude play the lat 5 years? 10, 15

February 18, 2009  09:02 AM ET

Well if he can stay healthy, no reason he shouldn't work out nicely platooning out there. And not a great loss for the M's, either.

Yea, that's probably a good estimate. I just figured he would play for an AL team so he could DH?

Brad whenever I am blue, I like to toggle on down to the nearest used car lot and smash some inventory with a monster truck. Try it, you will feel a whole helluva lot better!

THE TRUTH is a caring man who wants to see Griffey succeed.

Actually I do want him to finish well. He was the star of my generation. I still have that SI cover of him when they called him the Natural.

February 18, 2009  09:18 AM ET

That was a very long time ago. Next cover he gets will probably be titled "The Natural Disaster."

The Rays liked Pat the Bat better than Griffey. Can't say I blame them, I would have preferred Braves picked up any everyday left fielder but I guess a platoon with Griffey is better than nothing.

File this one in the "nobody cares" column

LOL...what exactly makes the Braves arrogant?

Griffey should use 'roids. It may help him perform....

Maybe he would qualify for a sr. discount on them. Where is Radomski, ask him about the AARP discount for Griffey's roids.

Hey, the season hasn't started.... Braves fans do have some reason for optimism.... a rebuilt rotation, a healthy bullpen, Griffey in left and the hope of Francoeur putting last year's disaster behind him.... a few things need to fall right, but if they do, the Braves can definitely be in the playoff mix.....

Agreed, your never out of it in that division if you can play 50-50 ball. A team that puts a string of 4 or 5 wins together in September can win that division these days.

The Phillies did win 92 games last year..... 50/50 would have left you 10 games out.... but it's not a weak division at all, especially if the Braves are competitive this year.....

My bad I was thinking West for some reason, you are correct. In that case I'm not sure about the Braves chances afterall. I know you love them so I'm sorry to say that but it could be another long year for you.
