05:46 AM ET 02.19 | For much of the past two years, Brian Roberts' future seemed to be somewhere besides Baltimore. But now the second baseman is about to be locked up as an Oriole for five years. According to team sources, the Orioles are finalizing a four-year, $40 million contract extension with Roberts, a homegrown talent who has developed into a two-time All-Star, one of the game's best leadoff men and one of the city's most beloved athletes. Roberts will make $8 million in 2009, and the four-year extension would start in 2010, meaning he would be under contractual control of the Orioles through 2013.

I don't see how this goes with their new game plan on getting younger. Don't know if this is a good move for them, will have to see.

February 19, 2009  08:55 AM ET

This is disappointing to everyone in the AL East except Baltimore. The guy loves hitting against division rivals. By the way, where was Baron Von Kingfisher with the scoop on this story? What, he doesn't have dinner with the parents of lesser-known players like Roberts? What a snob ...

February 19, 2009  09:31 AM ET

Here's one guy who's glad they didn't sign Tex.

February 19, 2009  09:59 AM ET

Wonder where he would have gone if Tex HAD signed with Baltimore ... it would have been a wise move for the Yankees to scoop him up, even if they made him a beer vendor, just to keep him the hell away from the plate when Yankee pitching is on the mound ...

February 19, 2009  10:01 AM ET

True. No way he would have gotten the money he's worth in this market if they had paid Texieria. They would have either traded him away to dump the payroll, or he would have asked for that.

February 19, 2009  10:47 AM ET

So he's not going to the Cubs?

February 19, 2009  11:22 AM ET

You're such a good reader, Southside!

February 19, 2009  11:40 AM ET

Good Move O's as Robert's is class all around. He can help the
younger guys for years. Watch out Yanks and Sux as O's are
on the way back up!

February 19, 2009  11:53 AM ET

How is it that they're on the way back up,because they're exactly the same as they were last year save for a player or two? Only thing on the way up in Baltimore is the team ERA ... that pitching BLOWS.

February 19, 2009  11:58 AM ET

It doesn't seem to go with the "we are trying to get younger" theme they have been announcing for at least the last year. But it's still a good move. Roberts is a spark plug at the top of the lineup and they won't have to fill another hole in the lineup if he were to leave.

I'm not sure how dumping a 31 year old solid defensive second basemen who has hit .285+ for years and is good for 40 stolen bases is a bad idea. You can't have all 25 year olds on the roster.

The Orioles are closer to competeing than most people think. It's not going to happen this year. But depending on the development of a couple guys it could happen next year or the year after. Between Roberts, Jones, Markakis, Wieters, and Huff(I expect Andy to extend his contract during the season if he starts putting up numbers like last year) they are set for the top 5 positions in the batting order for a couple years, have great defense, especially up the middle and arguably the best defensive outfield in the majors. They also have 3 of the most promising pitchers in the minors in Matsuz, Arrieta, and Tillman. The bullpen is good as well. If they can sort out the starting pitching this team will compete in the east. But finding 3 SP's to go with Guthrie is still gonna be a big task.

Whether or not they're trying to get younger, Roberts is not "old," and he is arguably one of their top two players. It's a smart move for the O's regardless of their team philosophy.

Not younger, but solid at second base. The O's have no one in the pipeline to play 2b.

Thank God.

February 19, 2009  01:12 PM ET

Thank God? Maybe that's the problem in Cubbyland - you can't recognize solid players. This guy, maybe he could help you, oh, I don't know ... win a playoff game?

February 19, 2009  01:26 PM ET

Robert's responds to his new contract by "raising the roof" in front of many excited fans.

The O's were terribad last year, but they would have been taking a step in the wrong direction letting him get away. Good move by Bal-Mer keeping one of their best.

we're still re-building...we can't all just buy our way into losing in the playoffs

February 19, 2009  03:01 PM ET

hmmm... now the Roberts to Cubs rumors will be on hold until the middle of the season.....

"we're still re-building...we can't all just buy our way into losing in the playoffs"

Listen, just because your owner follows the Jeremy Jacobs model of sports ownership, don't get all bitter at those of us whose teams do everything they can to bring their fans championships. You know the O's are the biggest laughing stock in the AL East, right? So don't frown, smile! your team is funny!
