05:21 AM ET 02.19 | he Boston Celtics reached out to the Charlotte Bobcats about trading for proven playoff performer Raja Bell, a league source said. So far, the Celtics don't have anything in return that appeals to Charlotte. The Bobcats are telling people that they have a possible two-for-one trade percolating and need to keep a hold on a roster spot. Boston lost guard Tony Allen to thumb surgery on Tuesday, and he could be out until the playoffs. For months, the Celtics have unsuccessfully tried to trade 2008 first-round pick J.R. Giddens for a draft choice.

greed always comes back to bite you... they should have paid that extra 4 - 5 mil to keep Posey... maybe big Baby, cash and a first round pick will net them Raja Bell... but once again they wouldn't have had to give all that up if they kept Posey.

I am still made about them not paying Posey - all because of 4 years vs 3? Are they retarded? Sure, they my stink by that 4th year but they stunk up 90's with overpaid people and most of 2000s for "overpaid" players. In that 4th year (if they gave Posey his 4 years he wanted), Garnett would still be there and Pierce would've most likely signed another 1-2 year deal in there too. Its not like there were many more options available at that time so....why break up a title team over 5 million dollars for 1 more season? You recoup that this season if they make it to the finals.

Remember in '87 when the Celtics had 5 guys that played most of the minutes, then injuries killed them? I am afraid of that for this season. The Allen loss will hurt them the 2nd half of season if they don't get someone to contribute. In all seriousness though, he was only playing 10-12 min a game......

Hopefully they will get someone. Can Sam play or not?

not a bad player to pick up-
don't think he's a significant difference maker...but does help

February 19, 2009  09:10 AM ET

Well Ainge, you screwed the pooch bigtime. The Celtics could have re-signed Posey and moved on. Instead, they still don't have a backup point guard, and they've spent the whole season trying to replace him, and they don't have anything to trade.

February 19, 2009  09:46 AM ET

The question is...what do they have to give up to get him? They don't have much to give without really thining out their team.

Boston has untill 3pm to get a backup point guard and a strong frontcourt player or their bench will not have nearly enough to beat the Spurs,Lakers not to mention the Cavs plain and simple, I SEE A REMATCH OF THE 2007 FINALS!!!!

February 19, 2009  10:15 AM ET

I never thought about this one, if the Celtics can make this happen I would pull the trigger.

I read that Tyson Chandler failed his physical, and is heading back to N.O. I bet the Hornets front office is pissed, the players are going to be happy to have him back.

February 19, 2009  10:42 AM ET

What team would'nt like a player like Bell? He can shoot the ball well from outside and is one of the best perimeter defenders in the league.

Not re-signing Posey is biting them in but now. But if they can avoid the injury bug they still have a great starting group.

February 19, 2009  11:47 AM ET

The Hornets/OKC trade failed....Thunder is looking to unload Joe Smith....If I were the Celtics, this is their best chance.Someone force a buyout, and sign Joe Smith.

Ainge got lucky with his In-laws, the McHale's. Otherwise he's just another Steve Kerr. You don't re-sign Posey for a measly extra 4m$ being in a huge market? Instead of cruising the regular season, the big-3 is completely stressed out due to the bench production (or lack thereof) and still trying to find out a balance due to Posey being unavailable, and Tony Allen not stepping his game up enuf.

February 19, 2009  01:52 PM ET

They will regret not keeping Posey come playoff time, cause right now this team is injured and weaker than it was last season cause it's bench. No Posey, Brown or Cassell. They need either a defensive minded player such as Bell who can fill the void by Posey cause they are both good defenders, both tough and both can shoot the three, Joe Smith is another player that can help this franchise repeat.

Ainge will find the way to bring Bell to Boston and I think will use some next season picks to do it

February 19, 2009  02:42 PM ET

Bell would be a great addition to the Celtics bench, unfortunately, the Celtics have nothing other teams want.

February 19, 2009  03:53 PM ET

Raja Bell is a good option

February 19, 2009  08:16 PM ET

You know MJ will make that CRAZY trade

As long as I get to look at this ring....I don't care. It was worth it
