Why Nets didn't trade Vince

04:59 AM ET 02.20 | In the end, Rod Thorn's action -- or inaction, in this case -- was governed by an immutable truth: "You don't want to give good players away," said the Nets president. "I don't think you ever want to do that." But Vince Carter remained the captain of Thorn's team Thursday, in part because there was no compelling reason to dump the superstar's salary without getting anything in return, and Thorn had plenty of chances in which to do so. Everything his peers had to offer -- from Portland to Houston to San Antonio and beyond -- ranged from the impractical to the insulting. Finding a comfortable landing spot for Carter -- even if he received little in return -- may have benefited his team in the future, if it created more salary cap space. But Thorn also knew he would have severely damaged the present, not to mention alienate every fan who believes that Carter is the Nets' best hope to remain competitive

A very good decision by the Nets to have kept Carter. You just don't give away a player like him. Now if they could only get that Yi guy to start playing well and consistently, ....

I beg the differ if they were smart they would have taken a much younger outlaw and rodriguez plus lafreantzs expiring contract for carter who is on a decline... carter isnt a superstar anymore and they wanted to much for him... and yes i know my spelling sux

all the talent and no heart will not get him far. half-man and half-amazing and his cousin half-man and half-season T-Mac both just can't seem to get it done come playoffs.

February 20, 2009  09:14 AM ET

They wished it was a smart decision. They are just covering their behind and not alienate Carter. They tried so hard to move him but they think they can get somebody like Amare. Are you kidding me? There were so many teams that were willing to give some of their young and promising players. They are trying to get something for the crap they are giving.

Without him they are toast!

Thorn knows he can get someone the caliber of Harris for Carter. People will come calling during the off-season when they get swept in the playoffs by Boston or Lakers in the first round. If not we will go through this next year until Thorn gets what he wants.

Team GMs are afraid of Thorn. The guy is a hustler and they are afraid to get hustled. He has gotten the best of a few GMs already.

If Outlaw was offered they should have take the deal. At the age of 33 years old making upwards of 17 million dollars. It was a bad move by the Nets. Thorn should have work the phone harder.

If Yi and Lopez turns into a 20 point scorer, Carters numbers will drop and making 17 million falling below the 20 point level nobody will take him. If those 2 guys don't develop, then the Nets I believe can still trade him. His value wil be determine by these 2 guys. Lopez I believe will get it, but Yi is a maybe.

But regardless at the age of 33 years old and numbers dropping by the season. I don't see how the Nets will be able to trade him. Looks good now but it will come back to haunt them.

Thorn is actually smarter than some people give him credit for. I said all along that the idea can be revisited after the season, but it makes no sense to decimate this team for a case of Gatorade.

February 20, 2009  10:34 AM ET

I'm just glad he didn't go to Portland. Looks like he's gonna join the ranks of players who have great numbers during the season, are fan favorites, and all-stars yet fail to win the one thing every players career is judged by... rings. To be regarded as a true great you gotta win a ring!

Wilt, Russell, MJ, Shaq, KG, Tim Duncan.. you get the point.

February 20, 2009  10:51 AM ET

If they can't get anything for him now they won't get anything later at the end of the season or the season after. The market is determine by buyers and not sellers. If it was determine by sellers, Thorn would have gotton more then a case of Gatorade as the seller price. Every GM know what Carter is worth. Funny how people say the Nets stole Carter but in reality that is what carter is worth and is showing in this market. A bunch of bench warmers is his worth.

In his final year , he will be a salary fill in for a trade. Bad move by the Nets.

Carter is the only draw the franchise still has but if Portland was giving up Lafrentz, Outlaw and Rodriguez then the Nets should have taken that deal. Financially it would have been a smart move and for a rebuilding franchise it would have been a better move to get younger. The good thing is that Carter still has some value so a deal could still be had in the off-season when there could be more suitors involved.

No kidding I can't believe the Nets didn't want that trade...I like that move by Portland too.

Rodriguez and Outlaw are good players but...they are who we thought they are. Am not holding out too much hope for development to stardom.

February 20, 2009  11:09 AM ET

*I would have liked that move by portland

I see your point too.

If the Nets don't make the playoffs though this nontrade might rear its ugly head.

My guess is the only team that wanted him was the Rockets whose only barganing tool needs mystery surgery.

barkley, kidd, kevin johnson, payton, malone, stockton, ewing, reggie miller, mashburn, nique, should i keep going or are there more players that simply aren't good cause they didn't win a ring?

The fact that you would make such statement shows your lack of understanding of the game. A ring is an indication of the people you were surrounded with. Many Hall of Famers left the game without having won a championship. Francisco Elson has a ring, and Charles Barkley doesn't. Who would you rather go to war with?
