Dodgers intensify Manny talks

08:41 AM ET 02.22 | On the phone and in newsprint, the Dodgers' negotiations with Manny Ramirez are intensifying. Colletti said he has spoken "much more" to Ramirez's agent, Scott Boras, over the last seven days than in any previous one-week period since they opened talks in November. "The conversations are more frequent and longer," said Colletti, who wouldn't say if the increased dialogue is a sign of progress. "Days are ticking off the calendar." There is no indication that Ramirez is backing down from his demands of a long-term deal. Ramirez's only known offers were made by the Dodgers -- two years at $45 million, one year at $25 million and an offer for arbitration -- but Boras said he is also in talks with other clubs. The agent said the Dodgers could be in trouble if they don't sign Ramirez.

What a ego Boras has. "The Dodgers could be in trouble if they don't sign Ramirez." Having Manny last year wasn't enough to beat the Phillies. If the Dodgers don't have pitching then they could be in trouble.

Call his bluff. The Dodgers made a fair offer. The only offer out there. Give Boras a deadline and see what happens. He is trrying to get the Dodgers to bid against themselves....

February 22, 2009  09:11 AM ET

It looks like we might see something never seen before in the course of human events.....A human being, angry and embittered and frustated about having to sign a 2 year/ 45 million contract to play baseball. This is a guy who's sense of entitlement is so insanely overdevelped that the words 'shameless greed' no longer seem adequate to describe it.....

Exactly. Do not offer him more than two years.

It works all the time with the Yankees, so Boras assumes that other teams will be willing to bid against themselves. He got the Yankees to bid against themselves for A-Rod, Sabathia......

On a side note, I find it interesting the maximum he will make is $5,000,000 more than the contract he already had with Boston. Plus, he would probably be sporting a 3rd ring at this point if he bothered to play something close to hard for Boston last year, and his reputation would not have taken such a hit.

Bora$ has a long history of getting teams to bid against themselves. Who are these other clubs $cott? Who else in the NL needs a aging mediocre outfielder, who is a hitting RBI machine, but could decide the owners are the devil, or needs to sit out against an ace, or who annually demand a trade, then state he wants to finish his career with your team, or has always wanted to play for your archrivals.

Bruins in '09...I don't think Manny realizes how much damage he did to himself by laying down and quitting on the Red Sox. No team feels he would not do the same thing to them. And to his apogogists: HE QUIT on his team. Period.

Thank you for the wisdom. I think that he and Bora$ thought the Yankees would sign him just to stick it to the Sox.

That is probably exactly what it was.

I read Boras's comments yesterday on how the Dodgers are nothing without Manny and everyone knows it. He did help them to the playoffs, they wouldn't have gotten there without him, very true but he also played over his head hitting almost 400 and driving in 1 run per game. He won't do that for a full season. Boras makes it sound like the Dodgers went on a 25 game win streak after Manny got there when the truth is they were a 500 team when he got there and finished just 5 games over 500 when it was all said and done. If the Dodgers were in a stronger division last year Manny wouldn't have made one bit of difference.

The Original Tony...Only the Phillies won it all. And as any Yankee fan knows, that is the only finish that means squat. Give the Red Sox credit, they sucked it up to rid themselves of the guy. I applaud them...

Bruins in '09..I think after what he did to the Red Sox, even the Yankees were scared of him....As a Yankee fan from wayyyy back, I commend the Red Sox for taking the hit last year and ridding themselves of the guy. The Red Sox were an American Institution long before Manny, and will be. He is just another spoiled player without them. A footnote to baseball history.

If the Dodgers fail to sign Manny, I'll view it as an example of total incompetence from the GM and incredible cheapness of the owner. Manny, whatever is the true story of his unhappiness towards the end in Boston, is a class AAA player and did only incredible things for the Dodgers last year on and off the field. Not to sign this guy, a real opportunity for the Dodgers, would be just absolute stupidity, incompetence and a sign that the owner doesn't want to risk even a penny of money spent by the fans to get the team ahead. That's how I would view anything less than a successful signing of Ramirez.

I would spend my money elsewhere. I wouldn't give Manny the Moocher $45 dollars. QUITER = TRAITOR.

The yankees will pay what they want to pay for players. That is why they are the number one and most successful franchise in baseball history. Look it up. As far as Boras is concerned he did not get the yankees to bid against themselves. They decide how much they are going to spend and for whom. I find it interesting that the dodgers won their division with Manny while the Red sox paid his entire remaining salary. In turn, the Red Sox did not win their division without him. All this because early in the year Manny had the audacity to ask where he stood with the options left for him and the team. The team refused to talk. Manny layed down. Right or wrong, the rest is history.

As far as CC goes the Yankees did bid against themselves, they had a 160 million dollar offer on the table for months and he didn't bite, even when the next highest bid was for only 100 million so the we ended up giving him another year. Personally I think we over paid. He will have to win 22 games just to make each win worth 1 million dollars. No pitcher is worth that, so each game he wins under that 22 just increases the per win dollars. Whats really ashame is that we(The Yankees) have to feel that they need to over pay to get guys. Players don't play for teams anymore because they just want to be part of the history of the team.
Boston didn't mistreat Manny, no team that I know of even the Yankees will pick up an option until the season is over, too many risks because of the money thats involved.
The Red Sox didn't win the division last year but they still made the playoffs and we didn't even with the big bucks that were spent.

He didn't have a contract in Boston, that's the problem. If Manny were to sign a 2-year/$40M contract with the Dodgers, that would be a more financially sound situation than had he stayed in Boston.

Exactly... with a LOT of help from Scott Boras, of course. I don't think Manny could have concocted that scheme on his own.

I'm on the fence as to if he quit on the team or not. His numbers in July were pretty awesome. However, he did act like a schmuck in an effort to force the Red Sox hand and in doing that I agree with you that he damaged his reputation immeasurably.

He didn't like the fact that the Red Sox had two team options on him, and he disregarded the fact that he was the one that signed that contract. That's what really sticks in my craw.

That was as much Manny's fault as it was Boston's. He wanted the 200 million 10 year deal and the only way Boston was going to do that was the options. But thats the problem with any long term deal, when its fist signed its great but later on when other players are signing for more money the players feel cheated.
