05:46 AM ET 02.25 | Connecticut Gov. M. Jodi Rell called UConn basketball coach Jim Calhoun's post-game tirade Saturday at a freelance journalist posing questions about his $1.6 million salary an "embarrassing display." Ken Krayeske, a freelancer and political activist, asked Calhoun in a news conference after a win over South Florida why the coach of a public university was making $1.6 million while the state has a $944 million deficit. Calhoun, who has won two national titles at UConn, first responded with a joke, then grew angry as Krayeske continued. the line of questioning. "My best advice to you is, shut up," Calhoun said.

Calhoun should be embarassed by his actions and make a symbolic offer to reduce his salary. He claims that he brings in 12 million to the school but let's see how much he brings now in during the OBAMA depression we are in.

How is this Obama's depression? Bush republicans put us in this economic state. Will you take a pay cut, his school would not bring in profits if it wasn't for men's & women's b ball there.

the gov and journalist should be embarrassed not calhoun. most athletic departments have budgets that are separate from the universities. all of their money comes from boosters and ticket sales. there is no reason why coaches should cut their salaries if they are not receiving government money to begin with. cutting his salary wouldn't help the state, but rather the athletic department.
ps i do agree with your obama depression statement however. go jindal/romney 2012

well to be honest it was the dems. bush and the republicans tried to fix the housing crisis in 2006, but since it was a democrat lead congress, there wasn't much he could do. thank barney frank and chris dodd for this mess.
ps obama is just making it worse by spending money we don't have on programs that don't create jobs

Please don't be an idiot. Both parties created this. Do a little research. Barney Frank and gang led the charge. There is enough blame to go around.

Exactly! And 90 year old former **** members who have been in congress for 50 years. None other than Senator Byrd of West Virginia (Democrat)

I guess you can't say former KK* members on this post.

Did the governor take a pay cut? If not, he should ****. Calhoun is an amazing coach. If UConn doesn't want him, there are plenty of U's with a need of a dynamic coach who brings championships.

Should Calhoun be making that much probably not, but it was his contract to sign and the "state's" right to offer it to him. Any1 on this forum would sign a contract for 1.6M. Now on to the issue of Calhoun being an ****hole about the question that was asked, I think he was in the wrong with the way he responded to that question no doubt. He works for a public taxpayer funded university and the constituents of Connecticut should be informed on how much money goes to the athletic coaches of these universities. This should be applied to all states and all universities in those states. Not sure how bout UCONN sure finds jerkoffs for it's coaches (Calhoun, Auriemma), although they do produce a good product year in and year out.
As for who caused this depression. I would say Bush and his staff didn't do the best job in the world in the White House, obviously, but too much blame is put on Bush, when it was Clinton, yes BILL CLINTON who during his presidency pushed and pushed for banks to offer subprime mortgages and low and behold the banks bit the bullet and did. 10-12 years later it has finally caught up with the banks and they realize maybe it's not a good idea to give 100K to someone who earns 20K a year (gross) and has a $1000 monthly mortgage payment, who can't afford much else if he makes all his payments on time, so what happens he misses his payments then it snowballs into a couple months and bam there you go a risky loan just became virtually worthless because it's easier to file bankruptcy then try to catch up on everything, but hey that's the American way nowadays.
So in closing Clinton did not cause this whole mess, nor did Bush, but to say one party is totally at fault is completely wrong and both sides need to stand up and take their share of the blame already.

This just shows the ignorance of you people. The governor, Jodi Rell, is a woman. Her name was in the first line of the story.
I'm thankful you all managed to politicize a sports thread with knowledge you don't posess. Yes yes, you are entitled to your opinions; but having undergraduate degrees in Finance and Economics, and currently reading for my MBA at Oxford....I can tell you that none of you know what you're talking about. Quit regurgitating what FoxNews, Limbaugh, or your local backwater newspaper says.
Oxford, and not Ole…

Thank you for brining your credentials. We are not worthy. This goes to show that anyone and everyone can get a degree, even complete morons.

The guy is an **** period. So were all the other journalists in the room. They to were telling the guy to get lost and get out of the room. They should all take a step back and look at the big picture. That is what is wrong with America today

Coaches salaries are relative to what they earn for their Universities. If you can't understand that, you need a serious lesson in economics.

This thread warms my heart.
The guy asking the question wasn't even a journalist from what I heard. Calhoun did not handle it well at all, but no one is just going to give over their salary during tough times. Everyone believes they earn what they get whether it be the janitor making $8/hour or Jim Calhoun making over a million. They negotiated that and they think they earn it and many believe they should be making more.
But, he did handle it very poorly. This doesn't set a good example, I'm sure, when he tells players to keep their cool when getting blatantly fouled or someone is mouthing off to them.

What is the economical impact of these programs for the schools? I for one don't think the coaches should be taking a pay cut if the programs are successful.
What would happen at UConn if Calhoun and Gino left the basketball programs. Would they be as successful as they currently are with a new coach? That is highly unlikely. Would the UConn women continue to bring in 10000+ per game if they were not the elite program in the country.
Would the UConn men bring in 12000+ per game if they were not an Elite program. Remember each person that attends a game brings money into the program and the school. People attending games normally purcahse concessions at the game and spend money either on campus or in the surrounding communities.
If you don't pay the coaches fair market value they will leave and go where they can get fair market value. How were the UConn programs before either one of these coaches arrived? I don't think either had sniffed success at the national level. They had not sniffed the money that comes from being successful at a national level either.
UConn's bigger issue might be why they play in a facility that can only seat a sellout of a little over 10,000 students. It might be the biggest facility in New England, but when your average attendance is roughly 2000 over capacity for the facility it is time to look at ways to bring in additional money to the school in terms of increased capacity rather than asking coaches to take a pay cut when they are being paid fair market value for their services at the level the services are being completed. When your school averages more than it can seat it might be time to see about how to increase capacity for your facility.
